Next Review

Next week I will finally be doing a review that has been highly requested - Stalker by Tarkovsky. What are your thoughts on it if you've seen it?

Comments

Tarkovsky did Solaris, right? Because I saw it on TCM once a few years back and loved it. I'm not familiar with him.

Wolfman Brandon

my favorite film of all time

Dan Tedesco

Saw it for the first time a year ago and was blown away. Only Tarkovsky I’ve seen, but I’m eager to see more. Everyone talks about the sepia-to-color change, but it really is beautiful.

Jim Barnes

I think that the film is extraordinarily well made—the mesmerizing long shots (accompanied by great sound design); the vividly detailed locations; the furtive, melancholic score. Tarkovsky is no doubt a gifted filmmaker. He can extract more feeling out of a single shot of men riding a rail cart than some films can in their entirety. As for what it’s about…well, I must say that I can only take so much of watching three men wander about the countryside throwing bags of gears around to avoid invisible traps while philosophically pontificating the merits of a magic room. I realize I’m being snide by describing the main course of events at face value—that the film is not meant to be taken literally—but that really is the whole movie, right up to its anticlimax. The film certainly explores themes worth exploring in any piece of art—the need for faith, the dangers of pursuing desire, among others—but I ultimately feel that the film makes the grave mistake of telling me these themes rather than showing me, which is ironic, given how many impactful shots there are in the film. They’re just not connected very much with the themes and philosophies being stated.

Only the highest of masters can make a 3 hour film about guys essentially L.A.R.P.I.N.G. and make the most profound cinematic experience I’ve had

jared Clarke

Isn't this film about Freemasonry?

Tony Moro

I understand barely a fifth of Tarkovsky’s vision, but I can probably say it’s a masterpiece? It’s hard to objectively analyze a Tarkovsky considering it affects each individual person in a personal way, but it almost felt like I was reaching theta state from meditation watching this haha. Also, the transition from sepia to color is one of my favorite moments in cinema, took me like 2-3 minutes to notice it for how seamless it was.

definitely is something you need to be ready for. Totally agree.

Lots of incredibly distinct imagery that is still very vivid despite only having seen it once two years ago. I've wanted to watch it again but it's patience and heaviness make it something I find kind of intimidating and only would want to watch again at a perfect time when I'm fully ready for that experience again.
