WINGS OF DESIRE

There are a lot of cult art films that rise in popularity with millennial hipsters and such. Always the novelty of an old film is part of the appeal. But I don't really see a lot of discussion around Wings of Desire (1987) as of late. For instance, I semi-frequently get review requests for Paris, Texas but I never get one for Wings of Desire - both Wim Wenders films. Am I missing something? Or do you agree that it's not as popular as it once was in the art scene? It could be entirely possible that I'm just ignorant. I really don't pay attention, as you know. ><

I don't know. I've never seen or heard anyone mention either one. Paris, Texas is one of my favorite movies from the 1980s but I haven't seen Wings of Desire even though I know about it.

I don’t really have much of an answer for why Wings of Desire doesn’t get talked about more. But then again, I’ve never heard many discussions be made about Wim Wenders. He certainly has to have his aficionados who love his work. He’s been around a while and has amassed a number of films that have gained recognition and prestige. But outside of Paris, Texas, I’ve never known anybody to effusively praise his work. Which is weird because that film and Wings of Desire are considered his best work among critics. But there are two factors that give Paris, Texas its cachet of coolness and gives it popularity over other Wenders films. One is the presence of the legendary character actor Harry Dean Stanton in what is considered his one great leading role, and who has a cult fan base that definitely eclipses that of Wenders. The other is Ry Cooder’s iconic slide guitar score for the film, which I guarantee is said to be loved by hipsters, millennial and older, in order to prove how cool they are. And it is, to be fair, a great score.

you should review Until the End of the World

I feel like it’s somewhat popular, but to add to your point the Wim Wenders I’ve seen are Paris Texas, and Alice in The Cities so maybe you’re on to something
