Tarantino Directing

I know I talk a lot of shit about Tarantino. But I really do admire his passion, and how present he is in the creative process. There should be more like him. If there are any aspiring directors in the house, I think you owe it to yourself to take this little piece of his advice.

I know some people don’t like his films, and I know some people are frustrated that he might be one of the last directors who gets to have a full career making the movies he wants to make with the budgets and stars he wants. But his passion for the art form is incredible, and I suspect he’ll have a big role to play in preserving film history even if he retires after his next film.

Jim Barnes

haha yes. I often disagree with him, yet really love listening to him regardless.

I’ve heard Nolan does this as well, except he holds a little monitor when he stands next to the camera. Whatever you may think of their films, it’s a testament to how good they are as directors that, despite all the camera, lighting, and other technical aspects that go into a scene, they recognize that the actor and their performance is the most important one. So they go out of their way to make as best an environment as possible for actors to work, and pay special attention to them.

Roland Emmerich could learn a thing or two from this. I have a parallel I thought of with his new film Moonfall. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask did the same moon crashing into Earth thing over 20 years ago and that's considered one of the best stories in gaming despite the fact that it came out when story in gaming wasn't taken as seriously as it is now. That's because it dealt with at least a dozen other things like friendship, loss, fear, just to name a few and did it in a mature and subtle way. It wasn't just another dumb disaster flick as I've heard with Moonfall. When your multi million dollar movie can't even do a story better than Nintendo did decades ago on the Nintendo 64, your movie sucks.

Wolfman Brandon

That was great. More than any other director I enjoy listening to him talk even when his opinions can be a little wacky (e.g. He really thinks Psycho 2 is better than Psycho). Looking forward to his upcoming podcast with Roger Avary. Also, I don't know if you've seen this interview but the story he tells here is absolutely hilarious. The only interview I've seen where he has a moustache: https://youtu.be/xkFVZL4Jh9w
