HOUSE OF GUCCI

Who saw it? I must know your thoughts. I just saw it, and will work on a review for it soon.

Felt like Lady Gaga's and Adam Driver's perfomance got more praise than deserved. Most of their appearances felt pretty unconvincing in my opinion.. Maybe it was the accents, but none of the dialogue felt smooth or natural.

Gaga was great fun, but I was underwhelmed. I didn’t think Driver’s motivations were characterized very well. Leto was awful, though I know some people disagree. (I saw some people were actually pushing for a best supporting actor nomination and I couldn’t believe it.) I liked the movie but didn’t love it. As for Ridley Scott, I of course don’t think of him as a great director on par with Scorsese or the Coens of whoever, but I do think he can be a capable craftsman. I thought The Last Duel was quite good, enjoyed The Martian, and also reveled in the bleak worldview of The Counselor, though Cormac McCarthy probably gets credit for that.

Yeah sad that a movie about a woman and her psychic plotting to kill her husband, could seem so flat.

My opinion has not changed after seeing this film XD

Deepfocuslens

Agreed. I felt like reading about the actual people was far more interesting than they seem in the film

I disagree so so so so strongly on Jared Leto. My God that was one of the worst performances I have ever seen. I also liked Adam Driver. I don't think he was going for a Michael Corleone type of arc. The internalization should be approached differently, I think. But yeah I was thinking it's Godfather gone pure trash but without any fun to it. I found little flourishes to fall flat every time. It was way too dull to be enjoyed ironically for me. And as you say....Scott just doesnt get the humor, and doesnt really seem to know how to frame it. What a fail in the scene between Pacino and Leto. Waisted opportunity.

For the most part, it was the performances that got me through it. Lady Gaga gives a fine, fire-breathing performance as a soap opera Lady Macbeth. It’s nice to see Pacino loosen it up rather than play yet another screaming, egotistical blowhard. Out of everyone, Jeremy Irons was the most convincing as an Old World Italian. I even enjoyed Jared Leto’s polarizing performance. I didn’t believe a minute of it, but I found it to be very entertaining. Adam Driver, however, has been better. He’s trying to go for an internalized performance that evokes Michael Corleone, but he doesn’t succeed. He comes off as a little too stiff and lifeless. At this point, I wouldn’t put it past Ridley Scott to be daft enough to believe that he’s making a grand familial tragedy on par with Coppola. But this story—with its backstabbing amongst an eccentric, ultra-rich Italian family for control of a fashion empire—lends itself so easily to camp, even without Leto and Pacino’s clowning performances. It needs the right touch to avoid that. Scott, unfortunately, has no mastery of tone, and so the camp elements seep in and sink the drama. Depending on your tastes, it doesn’t hurt the entertainment factor, but it does diminish the quality. It’s like The Godfather as directed by Ryan Murphy. All in all however, I don’t think the dramatic elements worked anyway. I didn’t find myself all that invested in what was going on. I didn’t care about the two main characters, mostly because there’s no real arc to them. Lady Gaga’s Patrizia comes off as a calculating social climber from the very beginning, and Driver’s Maurizio is so remote that it’s not convincing when he goes from indifferent to power-hungry. And when all is said and done, it’s hard for any tragic weight to be felt when you think that no one in that family has any business running Gucci (a big reason I’m sure the real-life Guccis hate the film). Ultimately, House of Gucci is a modern tragedy that leaves you cold but with camp flourishes that keep you entertained.

I really like Pre-Gladiator Ridley, but I really haven't found much lasting joy in anything he's made since then except for the extended cut of Kingdom of Heaven.

Jabari Weathers

My favorite part was lady Gaga’s press tour. To say you did this, that and the 3rd for this role obviously trying to score another Oscar to then have an alright performance was kinda hilarious. But the movie overall was just okay, honestly a snooze fest at times. Wish they would’ve included more of the wild shit that actually happened with the Gucci family that’s in the book.

In "Most Overrated Movie Directors II" video you said "Directed by Ridley Scott is not something you should advertise" and this movie fits to that description. I barely finished it.

When is Ridley Scott going to retire already? He's over 80 years old and has had almost nothing left in the tank for years now. He's no John Huston.

I wanted a whole film of Lady Gaga and Salma Hayek trying to hire a hitman. That had the makings of a great dark comedy. I was also slightly disappointed by how clearly it was a film backed by current shareholders in Gucci, pushing the basic message that the family were all crazy nutters speaking in Italian stereotype accents while the investors were all calm voiced intelligent men who were great for the brand.
