May Movies

What movies are you guys looking forward to in May? For me, I'll probably put "Men" near the top of the list.

Comments

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. I'll be avoiding Top Gun; I don't want to help fund the Church of Scientology.😉

Brian Wright

A new Cronenberg is coming out this summer.

Men absolutely, not sure about the rest. Will definitely see Top Gun, but I’m keeping my expectations very low. Alex Garland is an automatic for me. Loved Ex Machina and Annihilation. Also loved Devs, though I thought it overstayed its welcome and should have been a movie, not a series.

Jim Barnes

I really like The Brood. Felt kind of like a body horror version of marriage story lol

Jackson Littlewood

I’d go with Persona as well, I love that movie. I actually wasn’t crazy about the Seventh Seal. I liked it but I think I more appreciated it than it resonated with me.

Lux Aeterna is getting a Blu-Ray release in May, so I'll watch it then.

Woosh

Nothing in particular as usual. You've talked about David Cronenberg before. I just learned about The Brood which I knew nothing about. It's on YouTube so I watched it. It was a nice sympathetic portrayal of a loving, heroic father which you don't see often in horror films. I read that Cronenberg was inspired by a recent divorce and it shows. It felt very personal which I always appreciate in a genre that's known for a lot of cynical trash especially back then.

Wolfman Brandon

I am wanting to see it, but I don't think it will be playing anywhere near me soon. But I'll find a way at some point.

Also, Scenes From a Marriage and Autumn Sonata.

Wolfman Brandon

Easily my most anticipated of the year. Next to PTA, Park Chan-wook is one of my favorites working.

Tyler Shobe

Idk if it will be playing in your area but it looks like Gaspar Noe's new movie Vortex will be opening limited on April 29 and then going wide on May 6. I recently watched all his movies for the first time so I'm definitely still in that "mindset" for lack of a better term lol. Also here's how I'd rank his work as of now: 1. I Stand Alone 2. Irreversible 3. Enter the Void 4. Climax 5. Lux Aeterna 6. Love

Stephen

I'd go Persona personally, or The Virgin Spring. Those two are favorites of mine.

I didn't realize he had a new one. Thanks for letting me know!

Cannes is in May. My most anticipated of the premieres is Decision to Leave, a detective story from Park Chan-wook. His first film since The Handmaiden

Emerson B

Absolutely Men.

Arthur Augustyn

Men and Paris 13th District seem to be the only new releases that interest me. Might use the month to read a book and catch up on old films. Embarrassingly, I’ve only ever seen one Ingmar Bergman film, and that’s The Seventh Seal. It’s something I might have to remedy. Suggestions are welcome, as is any movie on streaming you think I might like. Just assume I haven’t seen it.

Bennett Oliver

Men is probably the only thing I'm actively looking forward to. Was excited about Doctor Strange but then Everything Everywhere All At Once came out and I think it's ruined multiverse movies for me. Top Gun looks like it could be relatively decent as a dad movie though I have no attachment to the original so it might be totally lost on me. Pretty slow month which is okay by me. Too busy for the movies anyway.

Tyler Shobe

Doctor Strange is top of my list by some considerable margin. However, I will probably also check out the following films at some point - Operation Mincemeat, Pleasure, Tankhouse, Monstrous, Men, A Taste of Whale, Paris 13th District.

Ross Skilton

I’m super excited for Men, but The Bob’s Burgers Movie is gonna be such a funny balls-to-the-wall musical that I’m honestly more excited for it than anything. Also, Inland Empire’s remastered version will hopefully expand outside NY/LA by May🤞

Jared Angcanan

I’d definitely recommend Annihilation! Lol I think I watched Top Gun like 50 times as a kid but I doubt I’ve seen it in 15 years at least

Jackson Littlewood

Similar feelings here. Though I never did see Annihilation. I know I should. I have only seen Top Gun once. I almost feel ill-equipped for that one.

Deepfocuslens

For me it’s pretty much just Men at the moment. I loved both of Garland’s first movies, especially Annihilation. On a guilty pleasure note, Top Gun: Maverick could be ok? I used to watch the original a lot as a little kid. Doctor strange 2 could also be ok since Raimi’s directing it but I haven’t liked a Marvel movie in a long time lol
