Norm MacDonald
Added 2021-09-14 20:17:53 +0000 UTCI am heartbroken over this. I even had a weird feeling a week ago, so I watched his final standup routine that he did in the spring of 2020. Norm was the most brilliant man in the business. No one was funnier. No one. Please share your favorite Norm MacDonald appearances and bits and why you love them. </3

His “deeply closeted” bit on a Conan appearance is in my head at least once a week. Same with his Kojak and Nixon impressions on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I love his standup a lot, but seeing him make other comics laugh was also great comfort viewing.

He took a Carrot Top movie that had no reason to be made and singlehandedly gave it a purpose to exist: for him to mercilessly make fun of it in a timeless comedy clip. Even now the only notable part of the movie’s Wikipedia entry, apart from how bad it is, is the fact that Norm roasted it. That’s pure magic right there.

2021-09-15 01:03:24 +0000 UTCI love Norm because he wasn’t like everyone else. Some people probably hated him. But if you got on his wavelength, he was the absolute best. The way he just let the jokes sit there with his deadpan delivery. I saw him three times in Las Vegas. He always included a joke about expensive Vegas steakhouses, where he said he tried to recreate the experience at home by spending all day painstakingly preparing the steak and then just when it was ready, “I know, first I’ll eat an entire loaf of bread!” I also of course loved the way he pushed the edge. I died laughing at forcing celebrities to tell the most awful boundary-pushing jokes on his podcast. This is said too often, but he was one of a kind.

2021-09-14 21:09:25 +0000 UTCGod, this is devastating. It’s hard to choose one moment from so many but I have to go with his moth joke on Conan. To go on TV and deliver a long, rambling joke about a moth living a life out of 19th century Russian literature for 4 minutes only to end it with the dumbest punchline imaginable takes incredible nerves. The grin he gives Conan, who’s been squirming impatiently throughout the whole thing, as he delivers the punchline is priceless. He’s happy about how he just wasted everyone’s time. The whole segment is, I think, quintessential of Norm’s genius: he was not afraid to have the joke be on you for his own amusement, to make you the straight man to his nonsense. That, along with his great deadpan delivery, was what made him my favorite. This is a really sad day. Norm was the best.

2021-09-14 20:29:04 +0000 UTCWhen he was supposed to do a roast of Bob Saget and didn’t wanna do it to because he was his friend so he started just saying a bunch of dated corny dad jokes, and still was able to have me in stitches laughing. Only person ever who could pull that off
