Confession

How many of you guys are into Harmony Korine films? He's someone who obviously is always on the radar. But I admit...I am familiar with very little of his work in its entirety. Of course...I know his whole Letterman show legacy. XD...that's how I was introduced to him. I was thinking of doing a review of Spring Breakers sometime when I get a chance in the next month, depending on the watching schedule. What do you guys think of him and what are some films that stick out in your mind?

yeah I think Franco is what holds it together for sure.

Thanks for recommending Julien Donkey -Boy. I haven't seen that one. :)

Haha so...that's what I find interesting. People either love or hate him. Much like Gaspar Noe. Some just find him horrendously primitive. For me...I get a kick out of it. But yes, I am curious to delve into more with Korine, and try and figure out what it is that causes the reaction.

I think he's a true auteur. He has his own brand of "trash-art" cinema that depicts low-class or generally underrepresented American citizens in ways that are artistically unique. The visual aesthetic of his films are always symbiotic with their content - case in point, Julien Donkey-Boy (1999). The film uses Dogme-style filmmaking and has a very weird hyper-grainy look to it. Korine actually shot it on video, transferred the footage to film, then transferred it back to video. No other film quite looks like it, and it's a perfect and haunting way to visually portray the world of the protagonist, who has schizophrenia. It's probably his most interesting film tbh. Gummo (1997) is also great, of course.

I'm not a fan, I think he's an untalented hack. I despised "Spring Breakers." The movie made me mad, I felt insulted and I'm pretty sure I'm on a watch list after watching it.

I've seen Spring Breakers and Gummo. Overall, I liked his films. He likes to portray the uglier side of America. Even in these ugly backgrounds, he tends to highlight elements of beauty, perhaps even the transcendental at times.

I've only seen Spring Breakers and Beach Bum so far. Beach Bum was a relatively fun McConaughey vehicle though admittedly I think it's only entertaining if you're already enamored with McConaughey. I honestly think Spring Breakers is massively overrated. It rung as a very hollow to me. Because I don't find it fun on a purely visceral level as a bit of trashy, pulpy indulgent entertainment. And I don't think it really has anything to say about the sort of party culture it depicts either. I was mostly bored by it. Though James Franco is kind of hilarious, not always for the right reasons but definitely a fun performance.
