TURN OF THE SCREW

Has anyone read the book, and/or seen it's movie adaptation, The Innocents? I'm working on a potential review for it soon, and I'm a bit fuzzy on some of the book differences. It had been maybe 10 years since I had to write about it for college. >< But yeah, let me know. And also, let me know what you think of the adaptation. I have my own opinions there.

Just finished watching, and, apart from being a faithful adaption of The Turn of the Screw, The Innocents is a masterpiece, one of the best movies of the genre I think, - worth watching any time,. if only for Deborah Kerr's stellar performance, even if you don't care for horror films.

Agreed!

The Innocents is a pretty faithful interpretation of the Henry James book. The language is just archaic enough that it's not one to speed read. The Innocents is riveting, haunting and an overall beautiful film. I stumbled across The Lost Moment from 1947, another Henry James adaption, and there were some themes that remind me of Turn of the Screw.

Never read the book. Even if I did, I'm not one to compare an adaptation to the source material. I purely judge a film as a film. If there were any changes, I don't care as long as it works within the context of the film. A faithful adaptation is all I ask for. That being said, I just rewatched the film last week. One of my favorite horror films. The kid singing O Willow Waly over a black screen and the 20th Century Fox logo perfectly sets the tone. The scene where the boy kisses Deborah Kerr on the lips like an adult shocked the hell out of me first time I saw it and I don't scare easily. Kerr is probably at her best here and the child actors deserve just as much praise. Such a beautifully subtle and chilling exploration of sexual repression, child abuse, and parental negligence.

Aside from 1963's The Haunting, The Innocents is my other favorite ghost/haunted house movie of all time! By far the creepiest film you could ever watch!

I haven't but probably should given my enthusiasm for the film and the fact that most people I run into who have issues with it tend to complain about how it's adapted.
