Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna
Added 2021-12-20 04:04:55 +0000 UTCI hate it.....XD. Really. I hate it. To me it is the most derivative schlock. No imagination. No composition at all really beyond the most basic, obvious, repetitive and boring. It sounds like bad trailer music to me. People talk about how great it is. Where? Someone explain to me what in this piece of music is remotely interesting? Also....hope you guys are having a good holiday. Merry Christmas! XD I'm a master of the segue-way.

I agree with you. Plus anime often has more interesting musical motifs and style choices. Often not quite what you'd expect. I actually don't mind Meltdown as much just because the whole finale is so full of dissonance...but I do agree that there are better ways to achieve that effect.

2021-12-20 19:19:56 +0000 UTCIn general the main theme is cool imo. A little glossy, but memorable for sure. The piece of music from this film that annoys me is “Meltdown” People talk about the bathtub scene from this movie in comparison to “Perfect Blue” but that piece has rubbed me as a cheap rip off of the repetive “Virtual Mina” score. The difference is while that one is repetive and simple in its own way, there’s a build with the chorus vocals and drums, it builds in such a subtley hypnotic way. With “Meltdown” it’s like you listen to the first 30 seconds and you’ve listened to the whole piece, it forces that anxiety, while with Perfect Blue in feels beautifully seasoned into the film, this is like ketchup on an over cooked steak. Merry Christmas btw!

2021-12-20 16:52:12 +0000 UTCI'm so glad to hear that! It's a show that I think grows with time in your mind. It has a subtle power to it compared to a lot of anime out there stylistically. It's the perfect anime to get into if you dont like anime.

2021-12-20 08:10:14 +0000 UTCSo I'm not actually that opposed to certain aspects of the overall soundtrack. I also used to listen to it all the time as a youngster. But I still think a lot of the bombast and lack of feel for compelling soundscape, actually kind of detracts for me. I think there are better composers and better ways of creating a harrowing experience musically. Merry Christmas!

2021-12-20 08:09:03 +0000 UTCI have the soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream. Used to listen to it all the time. Back then, I liked the movie a lot more than I do now. Still…aside from Ellen Burstyn’s fearless performance, I think the music’s the best part. In of itself, it might not hold up as a fine, rich composition, but within the context of the film, it works. Because you’re right, Lux Aeterna is simple and repetitive, but so is the film. The repeating montages, shock effects, and aural/visual motifs Aronofsky uses to hammer away at the audience complement the score, with its constant, over-the-top refrains, very well. And the relentlessly harrowing events give it a tragic grandeur it otherwise wouldn’t have, and in so doing gives the film some weight it otherwise wouldn’t have. Basically, within the framework of the film, the score serves its function well. And to me, it’s one of its better aspects. It almost makes the film seem more substantial than it is. But whatever, I’m playing devil’s advocate, trying to talk up the positive aspects of a film that doesn’t have many. Mansell went on to compose a better soundtrack for Aronofsky with The Fountain. And if you really want to listen to a great film soundtrack, I suggest Braveheart or Last Temptation of Christ. Merry Christmas!

2021-12-20 05:37:27 +0000 UTCI'm not familiar with that track. This is off topic but after hearing about the cancellation of Netflix's Cowboy Bebop and the actors attacking the fans, I found out that YouTube has the original series with the English dub. I'm not into anime but after hearing about how the new show was a deliberate butchering, I gave in to my curiosity and checked out the original. The first several episodes I liked but I didn't see what the big deal was but after Edward joined the party and episodes became more character focused, I was suddenly completely on board. Then the last few episodes with Edward's father, Faye realizing she has nothing without the Bebop crew, and Spike confronting Julia and Vicious was...wow! So as someone who isn't into anime, this show was absolutely outstanding. Anyway, Merry Christmas and to the actors attacking us: Shut up and go to hell!
