MATRIX 4

As a huge fan of the original, I have remained properly skeptical of this new one coming out soon. What are you guys feeling about it? Maybe you've already seen it. I dunno. But yeah, want to get an overall vibe from people on what to expect. Personally, I worry.

My first personal *non-spoilery* impressions. Was I bored? No. Did M4 have the same impact as the original on me. Also no. It's a movie that takes itself much less seriously than the former trilogy did. A lots of surprises and really fun meta (and I mean META) moments. But I also think that M4 doesn't harm the power and magic of its predecessors in any way. I understand it less as a sequel than a benevolent epilogue. Or, Lana Wachowski's personal commentary on the state of our current world 20 years after the first Matrix movie came out. I am sure some people might think this is pointless, or others may even feel being triggered by some of it. Imo the movie is totally justified and deserved. Not only because - in some very weird way - we are finally getting a happy-ending for Neo and Trinity. [What shall I say? Neo/Trinity magic still rocks!]. But also because we as an audience are forced to look into the mirror ourselves. There are a few stinky finger moments in the film which made me laugh quite a bit. From a formal perspective, I didn't enjoy the editing or the camera work as much as in the movies before - lots of shaky cam, very fast, hectic pacing/editing. Also I wasn't that impressed by the choreography of the fight scenes (which also seemed not very logical from a story perspective but more like something from a to-do checklist). Although some particular scenes are quite powerful and neat (most of those already being revealed in the trailers, alas). The strongest aspect of M4 is its weakest at the same time. Too much self-reference and too little actual development of character. I would have loved to see more actual interaction between Neo and a particular well-established character (you'll know whom I'm referring to when you get there). This was something that made me feel disappointed the most. Other than that, I enjoyed watching M4. Also, the soundtrack was pretty nice again and fitting. (I believe there were some references I was missing. I'll have to finally watch Sense8, I guess.) Hint: Post-credit scene not to be missed!

I feel very similarly. A lot of the tone and aesthetic feels off even if the concept is somewhat intriguing. Hesitantly optimistic is a good way to put it.

Early reviews saying the film kinda sucks

Tony Moro

We all know going into this movie the ONLY reason The Matrix was revived was to create a cinematic universe. It was not out of artistic vision but commercial viability. Lana Wachowski only agreed to do it because she said they were going to make it with or without her. Early reviews indicate the movie is a farce but it knows its a farce and manages to create something novel out of that. With that said, I've seen some clips — granted they're all out of context — but I haven't liked the tone they've taken in those examples. The Matrix was such a stoic film and the new one seems very played up. Maybe I'll get over that. I've heard good things from critics I respect but I also hear phrases like "the most transgressive film with The Last Jedi" which is not a compliment in my mind. I'm being hesitantly optimistic. The Wackowskis have a blank check for me between Matrix and Cloud Atlas. I feel I owe them the benefit of the doubt.

I wouldnt recommend really any of them but the first. The third film is way way worse. XD This is why my expectations are not too high for the new. And Wachowski's have always been hit or miss. But the Matrix was special.

I've heard mixed things myself. Very mixed. But I try not to read up on movies much before going into them. Unfortunately in this line of work, that can at times prove to be difficult. Thank you so much! Happy holidays to you. :)

I also kinda liked the psychiatrist scenes. The woke "trigger" dialogue like "we don't use the word 'crazy' in here," XD...I took it more as a comedic tone there than serious or literal. I am intrigued by the idea that it is about aging, and Neo remembering a time that felt like a dream. Now replaced by a lot of bad cosplay mimicry.

I have a similar outlook due to Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. But I admit, I do fear the meta-over analysis vibes I'm getting from the trailer, clogging the drain a bit. Similarly to the second and third films. But...in a way that is relevant to today, which often tends to be a point of contention with me, in terms of approach. But yeah, I'm with you in the sense that I'm not putting a lot of emotional weight on the result. But I'm hyped!

Deepfocuslens

I still haven't seen the original but I'm cynical so I'm betting it's another reboot that'll fall victim to the Hollywood checklist of woke politics.

I feel certainly hyped. I don't worry that much. Since "Cloud Atlas" I am sold to the Wachowski(s) anyways. (I even enjoyed watching "Jupiter Ascending", so...) I guess that people who expect M4 being an action-driven spectacle with a similar energy as M1-3 might feel dissapointed. The actors and their characters are older now, so it seems only natural that the focus of their struggles will be shifted. Probably more bike-scenes than fight-scenes [likely no rollators ... yet ^^ ]. I think there is another layer of philosophical interpretation to be discovered of what the matrix is, and some new aspects concerning the motivations of the machines. I expect M4 to be more holistic in its overall message than the preceding trilogy.

The whole thing feels like an unnatural, forced extension of a story that ended with the third movie, not to mention an attempt to recapture the glory of the first one, which I doubt it will do. The one part of the trailers that I liked was the shot of Neo in the elevator surrounded by people looking down at their phones. It’s a very funny way of saying that we are more plugged into the Matrix than ever. But I can’t help but be cynical, for I think the real reason this movie exists is because, after a string of expensive flops, this is the only film the Wachowskis could get greenlit. I’m not hopeful at all about the new film. The video game, on the other hand, looks incredible. Makes me wish I had a PS5. I think that direction is the right way to go for anything Matrix-related. Forget movies.

Bennett Oliver

I wasn't too encouraged by the trailers but as always I hope its good. Early word of mouth that I've seen has been positive so maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise. Also just want to say I hope you're doing well and Merry Christmas!

I rewatched the original recently in prep for the new one and I still don't love it. I appreciate it and probably would have more affection for it if I saw it when I was younger but I just can't get myself to call it an amazing movie yet. And despite that mild reaction, I still went ahead and watched Reloaded. For a sequel to a movie I don't particularly care for, I found Reloaded to be such a massive disappointment and kind of garbage. I was planning on watching all of them and then the new one tomorrow but considering my mild reaction to the one good movie and an adverse reaction to the first sequel, I had to stop. If for some reason you guys report back that Resurrections is actually decent maybe I'll finish off the trilogy and watch the new one but right now, nah. You can keep it.

Tyler Shobe

It doesn't even look or feel like The Matrix! At least the sequels still had that same look and style from the first. This new one feels so distant from the other three. It's now being compared to The Last Jedi. That's horrible!

Tony Moro

First one is amazing, and now just as relevant due to what's going on. People are finally waking up to the system. But, yes, as a film, the original still holds up very well. The sequels weren't good at all, but I didn't mind part of Reloaded, mainly the action scenes like the freeway chase, were amazing! Keanu as a badass is always a plus. I have ZERO interest in the 4th film! Don't care about any woke message they may have or any social commentary, anything sequel-related from Hollywood now I'm fuckin over it.

Tony Moro

I am worried as well. The first trailer didn't look very good to me, but I thought the second one looked very bad. It feels like it's going to be similar to The Force Awakens where they just say, "Hey, let's just do all the same stuff as the original that everyone loved." I don't think this series needs to be revisited unless they really have something substantial to add to it, and from everything I've seen so far it does not look like there is much originality going into this one. I really enjoy the original trilogy though and I hope I'm absolutely wrong and so far off base. But I too worry.
