Lindsay Ellis

I have a lot of mixed feelings on Lindsay. Been following her off and on since 2008. Fantastic content...but her lack of self-awareness and twitter addiction became a bit much for me. Overtime her delusions were leading her to the edge of the twitter cliff, and I figured this result was inevitable. But still a sad thing, even if I feel much of it she brought on herself. Certainly a lesson for other content creators on not how to behave I'd say. Her write-up on leaving Youtube was quite disturbing. I don't see much growth or self-reflection, or any common sense in the words. I just see a battered soul that needs to go away for a long time, and really take a look in the mirror and consider new perspectives towards personal fulfillment. There is a lesson to be learned from this, and I think she is far from comprehending it...as smart as she is. What are your thoughts? Feels like all I see now are Youtubers having meltdowns online.

Yeah it's a lot of self-absorption, and continuing to think you're the one who is the victim, without having the honestly to admit when you're wrong. Twitter isn't real. If you take it seriously...then you need to step away. Otherwise you're gonna go insane. Especially if you're in her shoes.

I never followed her so I didn't know this was a recurring problem. Hopefully, she'll get better.

You’re right. She lived by the sword and now she’s died by it. I’ve only seen a limited number of her videos in the past, but from what I watched I could tell she was a very intelligent, insightful critic. But I could also tell that her viewpoint was interwoven with a kind of ideology that, quite frankly, raised red flags for me. I finally tuned out when she did something that you say she has done numerous times: she discussed a famous actor who has been cancelled and wrote this person off as a one-dimensional monster undeserving of a career. I won’t say who the actor is because that invites a discussion I don’t want to get into, but I will say that this actor, while committing alleged actions that I find to be reprehensible, has a history of decent and even righteous behavior throughout his career that has too easily been dismissed in the name of labeling him a “bad man”. That I simply won’t do, and I can’t bring myself to respect anyone who does. So yes, she gave a lazy, reductive critique of a film, the backlash was absurd (as you said), she gave a shitty defense of her tweet in response, and then proceeded to drape herself in martyrdom as the outrage wore on because…she can’t bring herself to admit she tweeted an oversimplified review? Or that she’s capable of having an oversimplified thought? I haven’t been following the story too closely, so I don’t know the blow-by-blow details following her response (maybe I myself am oversimplifying things), but I do hope, like you, that she does a little self-reflection and comes to realize that things, and people, are more complicated than she’s characterized them as being.

Excellent points. I fully agree with you. The Lindsay downward spiral is a long time coming...and yet she still found ways to blame everyone other than herself, which tells me she hasn't learned the key lesson. And it's what you're saying. But at the same time...I feel for her. I may be a very small Youtuber by comparison, but the constant attention does become quite overwhelming at times and isolating. Especially online attention. Which is quite different from personal interraction. We aren't built for this kind of negativity from dozens of strangers. It might seem like not a big deal, but even the thick skinned get rattled on occasion. However....I do follow your line of thought. You just can't care what people think. You don't owe anyone anything. Best to try and be healthy about it. I admire Joe Rogan for that reason. He has the biggest platform in the world, is destroyed and "cancelled" nearly every day by the mainstream media. He shrugs it off, goes on with his day, and still remains positive about the world and people. This for me, is far more admirable, than a Lindsay Ellis.

As I said to to Mr. Wolfman Brandon below...I agree it was a ridiculous thing to be cancelled for. But to me, it was a domino effect. It felt like one tweet that represented dozens of questionable things she's said overtime online.

Deepfocuslens

I agree with you. But to me...it wasn't so much what she got cancelled for. In the big scheme of things...it's all quite silly. She has said so many cringy things overtime...that this felt like it was building to a domino effect. It wasn't just one tweet people are frustrated with her for, and that's what she doesnt seem to comprehend.

Deepfocuslens

I do too. She became more and more a angry with the world, like most of the channel awesome people. And it just got more and more toxic. Felt like a ticking time bomb to me.

Deepfocuslens

I honestly didn't even think how she got cancelled was that justified. Seemed silly. But....just based on her behavior...she typically instigates the dialogue on cancelling others unjustly. Eventually, with that attitude...you end becoming a victim of it as well.

I (apparently) follow her on Twitter but I don't know anything about her. What are these events she's referring to when she says "2021 was the worst year of my life?" What could have possibly happened? I've never understood how people get so wrapped up by their internet presence. Mean internet comments can be demoralizing, but when you have content that attracts hundreds of thousands of views and dozens of comments every day... does it not become white noise? How do these people not just tune out the noise and make the stuff they care about? Too many people substituting Twitter for actual human interaction. These same people all know intuitively social media is terrible for any individual person yet they engage on that god forsaken platform all hours of the day then seem dumbstruck when they wake up miserable. I suppose the pandemic is partly to blame but still. I read this book back in 2014 called "So You've Been Publicly Shamed," very ahead-of-the-curve as a pre-cancel culture book on cancel culture. An illuminating section of that book is when it examines people who were ~not~ shamed despite doing identical actions as other examples in the book. The author's conclusion is: when you're criticized, don't give a shit... don't even suggest you might give a shit. Then nothing happens. If someone has a bad faith interpretation of your actions, tell them to fuck off. Or don't say anything at all. Who cares? I have yet to see an example where this approach does not work.

I’ll say this much about the situation: when you’re defending yourself in a statement against accusations of racism towards Asians, don’t EVER use the word “squint”.

Bennett Oliver

Ok, so I looked it up. Yeah, she didn't do anything wrong. You're allowed to criticize movies. Although, her response was not great. It seems like this "controversy" may force her to figure some shit out.

Jestergambit

I've been following her since her "Nostalgia Chick" days. Her content got definitely got better after she went out on her own. I'm not on Twitter anymore. So, I can't really comment on that (I guess I could go read it.) I've always felt like something was off with her though. That's sad to hear that's going off the deep end, I hope she finds her peace.

Jestergambit

I read about this. To me, she said nothing wrong in the original tweet she got attacked for. She was fairly criticizing a film for being predictable and mostly derivative of the YA fantasy genre. It had nothing to do with racism. Disney has been recycling their plots and characters constantly for the past several films. Her mistake was the follow up tweet which wasn't necessarily untrue but not the best response. She should've stayed silent and waited until the storm blew away.
