Academy Awards
Added 2022-01-31 23:30:46 +0000 UTCJust so I can get a general sense from you guys....what are your feelings on the Oscars this year? Are you intrigued? Are you indifferent? Are you less interested, or more interested in it now than last year?
Comments
I know that people are critical of the show Most of those criticisms are valid. But I watch it every year for the same reason.I have so many great memories of watching The oscars that even though it doesn't feel like that show which I grew up with I am nonetheless drawn back to it,EVERY SINGLE TIME!

2022-02-02 17:33:22 +0000 UTCI mean, it's meant to be a fun, self-important, political aspect of an American business. Politics within an industry as fascinating as Hollywood can be quite interesting. But they've driven it into the ground to such a degree that no one really watches it even ironically anymore. That's when you know you've really failed. ><

2022-02-01 20:57:21 +0000 UTCI'd say this is pretty accurate to my own experience as well. But I didn't stop due to time difference. I stopped due to it just being boring.

2022-02-01 20:55:26 +0000 UTCYeah, Jack is my great grandfather and Tim is my grandfather.

2022-02-01 17:29:04 +0000 UTCI stopped watching the Oscars years ago as it was always a hassle to watch them in the UK anyway, they were always running late at night. I do still normally look to see who was nominated beforehand and who won afterwards though as it is sometimes useful to know, if does give a little view of Hollywood's current zeitgeist as well as being useful for quiz trivia if nothing else. I normally make some small effort to check out winners/nominees if I see the films on streaming.

2022-02-01 10:31:10 +0000 UTCMaybe you're an online rando (as am I), but you DO have credibility, because it's earned. Before I ever signed up for your Patreon, or even subscribed to your YouTube channel, I watched many of your videos and found your thoughts worthwhile. I'm not much interested in what "the Academy" thinks about whatever, and I'm even less interested in watching a show about it, but I'm very interested in YOUR thoughts on the year in film (for example).

2022-02-01 09:54:18 +0000 UTCHopefully the Oscars will be held at a Denny's this year.

2022-02-01 07:05:13 +0000 UTCI take the film festivals more seriously, than the Oscars for sure!

2022-02-01 05:44:56 +0000 UTCI'm glad that the fascination with the Oscars has started to die down a bit, at least in cinephile communities. Being a non-American, I never really understood why they were such a big deal among hardcore cinema lovers. It's an awards ceremony meant to honour(mainly) US cinema, while the most interesting work has often happened outside the US (and even when it does happen in the US, it's mostly outside the Hollywood system). And of course, it's not good cinema from the US that's honoured, it's "important" cinema. Nowadays, I just keep up with the Cannes, Berlin, Venice nominations, along with a few other film festivals.

2022-02-01 05:08:42 +0000 UTCIt’s cool that you have that connection to it.

2022-02-01 04:17:04 +0000 UTCShe wouldn’t be my pick either, if we’re going for merit of the nominated film alone. Which, in a perfect world, would be how the Oscars vote for these things, but I gave up on that a long time ago. I’m just glad that the Hollywood political machine is in her favor and the industry sees fit to honor her. Though I consider Power of the Dog a good film and not a great one, I don’t begrudge people thinking it the best film of the year and her the best director, even if for callow woke reasons. I can think of worse people to give the award to. As for who I would pick, I can’t say. PTA, maybe? I wish Sean Baker was on more people’s radars. I haven’t seen Drive My Car yet, and that’s the one I want see most before I make up my mind. As for Julia Ducournau…I’d pick her if I thought she had a chance in hell of being recognized. But I suppose the Academy thought it distasteful to honor a film about a car-loving, gender-bending serial killer. Their loss.

2022-02-01 03:39:41 +0000 UTCLol I hear you. Idk to be honest. To borrow from a comment above I do love the awkward moments especially when...you know... they fuck up who won Best Picture and then they have to take away awards from people and hand them to the real winners. That was the best Oscar moment in years! Lol

2022-02-01 03:35:17 +0000 UTCNo way! Jack Holt the actor? Wow!

2022-02-01 03:32:30 +0000 UTCHaha they just keep chugging along. Driven into the dirt long ago..and yet somehow they are still going. XD
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:23:52 +0000 UTCYeah I mean, I don't care for it myself...but you want people who work hard in their industry to do well. And Jonny Greenwood is long overdue for an oscar
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:23:23 +0000 UTCAh yes. You have an incredible background, and an amazing family tree. :)))

2022-02-01 03:22:42 +0000 UTClol...I like your style
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:21:27 +0000 UTCIt's always been a sham. Anyone who buys into it for real, I have concerns for. I don't watch the show, but I enjoy asking people if they do or not and why. But I'd say this years films are a step up from the last.
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:21:08 +0000 UTCI agree with you on the politics and the awkwardness. But admittedly...the awkward moments or the unplanned moments that often occur...are really the only reason to watch. Any spontaneity during a show that is so forced and scripted...I find welcome. But not enough to watch. This is why meme's exist to scroll through the next day. XD

2022-02-01 03:19:25 +0000 UTCLol, right!?

2022-02-01 03:18:29 +0000 UTCIf I may ask...why watch every year out of habit? Reason I ask is because...I know a lot of people who do the same thing. Or...they will build it up, then the show comes on...and within an hour they are bored as hell. And I guess I wonder why people would continue doing so, if each year it continues to be the same thing.
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:18:08 +0000 UTCExactly. She will win cause "femininsm." Which...to me is lame. I wouldn't pick her for best director. Has nothing to do with her gender. But yeah I mean...last year was disastrous. But this year...at least people will likely tune in to the opening monologue
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:16:48 +0000 UTCI mean...I'm technically an online rando with no credibility. But that's why youtube is great. We can talk about what we want, and people can watch or not. I will be doing a video on the academy awards...but not exactly what you think. It wont involve predictions and nominations
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:15:22 +0000 UTCYeah same. Which will be hilarious because WSS bombed hard in the united states. And it all is just one giant metaphor for how Hollywood is stuck in a time that doesnt exist anymore...and expecting the same kind of attention and results
Deepfocuslens
2022-02-01 03:13:30 +0000 UTCOh that’s really cool!

2022-02-01 03:09:00 +0000 UTCHey Jester, you're a pedophile too? 😳
Tony Moro
2022-02-01 03:05:13 +0000 UTCUnless I get invited to an Oscar party, I don’t really watch them. Most of the films I like don’t get mentioned. That being said, I usually look up the winners, haha. I would love to see Licorice Pizza, Last Night in Soho, or Nightmare Ally be nominated and win some awards. Maybe they will, we shall see. My prediction is that West Side Story will clean up.
Jestergambit
2022-02-01 02:47:54 +0000 UTCIn the pre-Internet days, I was much more interested in the Oscars. Now that it's impossible not to be bludgeoned by everyone's opinions about everything, the Oscars don't matter much to me. I'm much more interested in the perspective of one person whose opinion I respect, because Internet culture has shown me how worthless mass opinion is. So I'd much rather hear *your* take on the year in film than hear "the Academy's" take. Or, heaven help us, takes from online randos with no credibility.
Derek H.
2022-02-01 01:44:53 +0000 UTCAnything is better than last year. But the people and movies I’d like to see nominated aren’t being given any attention at all. Not Nicolas Cage, not Simon Rex, not a single person from Mass (who, between the four of them, gave the performances of the year). And Titane, this past year’s Palme d’Or winner, isn’t even on the shortlist for Best Foreign Film? I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but still… I am glad that Jane Campion is the frontrunner to win Best Director, but I know that it will have less to do with the fact that she’s one of the most interesting filmmakers of her time, or even because of the fact that she failed to win for The Piano (considered her masterwork) nearly 30 years ago. It will be because she’s a Woman Director Who Made a Film Against Toxic Masculinity. Such is the way of the Oscars. They value statements over art.
Bennett Oliver
2022-02-01 01:30:58 +0000 UTCNot really interested. As someone who watches every year out of habit, this may be the year I stop. I haven't seen a lot of movies that are expected to get nominated and outside of Licorice Pizza, the ones I have seen have been very underwhelming. Also, to add to what Tyler said, Titane not even being on the shortlist for best foreign film is a complete joke.
Stephen
2022-02-01 01:08:04 +0000 UTCI've always found live events like that to be rather uncomfortable so I've hardly ever watched the Oscars. I'm thinking someone's going to embarrass themselves or get cut off in front of all those people and the world and so it feels awkward and tense. "Thank you speeches" also bore me and feel forced. Beyond that, all the political virtue signaling in recent years adds significantly to the cringe. I love movies so I should love the Oscars, but I really don't.
Steven Aguilera
2022-02-01 01:04:06 +0000 UTCI think my peak of interest was when Parasite was competing in 2020. Last year there were like no good movies competing so I especially couldn't give a fuck. This year I have a few dogs in the race (West Side Story, Drive My Car and Licorice Pizza) but at the same time, Titane isn't a huge contender so obviously it's all a sham.
Tyler Shobe
2022-02-01 00:01:34 +0000 UTCThe annual gathering of the richest mental patients in the country pretending to be hot shit while saying the most insane things? Not interested.
Wolfman Brandon
2022-01-31 23:54:45 +0000 UTCMy family has always followed no matter what’s nominated because our Grandpa Jack was one of the original 36 founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So we always pay pretty close attention and see as many nominated films as possible.

2022-01-31 23:44:47 +0000 UTCMaggie, you can stop watching and worshiping these Hollywood pedophiles! Enough already! Lol these shit award shows mean nothing and nobody gives a fuck anymore! Hollywood is dying and will be gone forever. All these pedos will be executed, and are being executed by the military. Stop watching all these creeps! You gain NOTHING from any of it! Not worth your time and energy. Worry about more important shit!

2022-01-31 23:44:32 +0000 UTCNot as interested as I used to be, would like Jonny Greenwood to win something though!
