More Noe Love
Added 2022-02-09 21:02:34 +0000 UTCI'm working on a video where I rank Gaspar Noe films from worst to best. What would you say is your favorite Noe film and least Noe film?

Again, I can't say much about Noe's films since I haven't watched them. All I know from reading is that some people who have seen his films are impressed but don't feel like rewatching them. I wouldn't agree in that Lars von Trier deals with pain just for the sake of it or that his work may be called singular. He often likes to look at Christian concepts typically transposing those to women characters like devotion and sacrifice ("Breaking the Waves", "Dancing in the Dark"), or apocalyptic ruptures ("Melancholia"). There is always a transcendental element in the story where pain (or trauma) ignites a complete shift of the world (internal or external). A rendez-vous with an emotional and physical singularity, leading to detachment, de-identification, and some form of transformation. Not happy-endings in the conventional sense, though. What you call masochistic interest can imo be interpreted merely as a reflection of Skandinavian mentality [that is elongated long-winter depression, of course^^]. I haven't watched "The Idiots", but from what I know this Lars von Trier movie is pretty wild and funny. One of his earlier films where he doesn't focus (yet) on the subject of pain. [Edit: Purely from the synopsis it also seems this film has some striking similarities with Gaspar Noé's "Climax". I suppose comparing those two films could be quite interesting.]

2022-02-19 10:01:15 +0000 UTCI disagree. I feel like Lars Von Trier is more interested in masochism for the sake of masochism. It lacks in the brightness and wildness for me that I feel when I watch Noe. I admire aspects of Lars Von Trier a lot, but more often he feels more interested in pain more as a singular concept.

2022-02-19 00:27:34 +0000 UTCI maybe should note that I have been consciously avoiding Noe Gaspar Noe's movies so far. But a valid charaterization of Noes work compared with another provocative/scandalous filmmaker Lars von Trier seems to be the following: Lars von Trier likes to torture his actors in the process, whereas Noe Gaspar prefers to torture his audience. I don't wish to initiate a discussion about artistic quality at this point, but what can be said for sure is that Lars von Trier's movies are rewatchable, at least.

2022-02-17 10:56:08 +0000 UTCI havent seen Love or I Stand Alone because they are really hard to find without pirating. I would say Enter the Void or Irreversible are at the top followed by Climax. Hard to say which one of the two deserves the top spot. Lux Aeterna would be last for me.

2022-02-10 23:51:28 +0000 UTCI mean it's hard to not think Love is his worse. As for his best, probably Irreversible just cause it's probably his most thematically tight and consistently engaging film. Though Climax squeaks it out for me some days and Enter the Void, for all it's faults, is kind of an unforgettable film experience.

2022-02-10 18:13:04 +0000 UTCI stand Alone is the Noe film people barley talk about, it’s definitely rough around the edges in a first film kind of way, but it’s dope. If you like Irreversible the main character in I Stand Alone is the old man at the beginning.
