2024-10-02 17:58:46 +0000 UTCI'm not big into horror movies but I liked Smile more than I thought I would. The central premise of trauma acting as a supernatural curse that leads to more trauma has a lot of potential. They portrayed the story in a way that was so grim, it's probably one of the most disturbing "moods" to a movie I've seen (again, as someone who doesn't spend much time watching horror). I was disappointed with the final 30 minutes because I don't think the mystical stuff was needed, but above average overall. I also remember the "smile" stuff wasn't integrated well into the rest of the movie's concept. Seems they started with "what would be weird?" and worked backwards. Maybe the sequel will be more cohesive.

2024-10-02 17:09:12 +0000 UTCI thought the original was alright. I remember going in with low expectations and walked out thinking it could've been a lot worse. I thought Sosie Bacon & Kyle Gallner did the best they could. I think as far as horror movies released in 2022 go it's certainly better than mediocre and garbage such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre that was on Netflix, The Invitation, Halloween Ends, the Firestarter remake & Prey for the Devil but I liked Nope, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Pearl & Barbarian far more. I will admit though that I feel like if I had paid full price for a ticket rather than an early matinee I probably would've disliked it more? I am planning on re-watching it and the Terrifier films in preparation for their respective sequels coming out over the next two weeks.

2024-10-02 17:08:53 +0000 UTCyeah great marketing. Agreed. When I was little...the idea of a person just standing at the end of a hallway grinning at you like that...was the most terrifying thing to me. I wish the movie tapped more into my nightmares as a kid but....nah, it was silly. Fun though.

To me it felt like a middle ground between the kind of art house "mental health" horror we get from A24, and the kind of jumpscare-a-thon teen horror we get from, like, The Bye Bye Man etc. I think it fumbles the mental illness metaphor a lot in the last act, but there are some really effective scares and some genuinely horrifying imagery that I loved. It definitely felt a bit "safe" though. It feels like it might have been studio-noted, and if that's the case I'd love to see a director's cut. I've actually heard the sequel is an improvement, which is exciting. Now that he delivered one hit, maybe he has more freedom to really explore the premise and take some risks?
