Topic Question

Name an actor you think is overrated and why.

Comments

I have yet to see a film that Angela Bassett stars in that makes me go, “Wow! That film was great because of Angela Bassett’s performance.” I know people will point to her turn as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, but I think Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner was more of a powerhouse performance than hers that film. Just sayin’.

See this is where I have an issue with the “Name an overrated actor” prompt. Gal Gadot’s starpower is undeniable, but she’s not that good of an actress. She can’t be overrated because nobody actually rates her acting chops.

If we're talking about blockbusters I cannot stand Ryan Reynolds. I just don't find him funny in these costly movies like the Deadpool trilogy, Free Guy or those two Hitman Bodyguard movies, in more serious or dramatic roles however that's a tough one for me. I'd have to put some thought into that.

Sir Alec Guinness, great actor but I fail to see why he got the oscar for river kwai over Charles laughton or Brando that year.

Hussain

Pedro Effing Pascal. Why he is in every movie is beyond me.

I love Schrader's scripts and movies, and even social media comments like this (see the excerpts in a recent Harper's: https://harpers.org/archive/2024/06/film-comment-paul-schrader/). But it sounds like he didn't praise her acting?

Alex Wolff. He’s been in some good films the past few years, but for some reason, I’ve never found him appealing.

Ken

I find Cotton more of a relatable screen presence than Andrews tbh

Dan

I can’t think of a single film that benefited from having Timothee Chalamet in the cast (though the inside joke with his casting in The French Dispatch was very funny).

Dan

But Paul Schrader says she’s the most beautiful actress to appear in the movies!

Dan

Jared Leto. Maybe with the exception of Dallas Buyers Club, I just feel this immense amount of irritation from him. I don’t know the guy personally, but something about his performances always bugs me. The same way most might feel about Leo. I get this feeling that he thinks he’s made of gold. Which isn’t the case. Just my opinion though.

Gal Gadot is an AI bot's idea of acting

This is going to be controversial but Joseph Cotton. Unless he's acting with Orson Welles where they never fail to create sparks on screen together, he always seems distant from the other actors. I feel like Dana Andrews from that same era does a much better job with the dry, emotionally muted persona while still having a solid chemistry with the rest of the cast and I believe I would enjoy films like The Third Man much more if he was the lead instead.

Wolfman Brandon

HOOO-AHHH!

Drew Perkins

Leonardo DiCaprio. I think he excels in more comedic turns, but his dramatic performances are often overwrought and feel more like "capital A" acting than genuine emotional nuance.

Drew Perkins

The lovely Al Pacino. Too much shouting and eye rolling. 🙄
