GLADIATOR 2

Just so ya'll know, yes I've seen it. Won't have time to do the review until tomorrow. But it's coming. Got me thinking a lot about the original. How do ya'll feel about it?

I very much enjoy it. Yeah, it was overrated in its day (it is worthy of neither Best Picture nor Best Actor, that's for sure), but it still remains in my mind a solidly rousing swords-and-sandals epic. Ridley Scott, whose career is pockmarked with more duds and misses than just about any revered director I know of, delivers one of his better films with grit and visual grandeur. But I think the film mainly works because of the work of Crowe and Phoenix. Crowe rightly became a movie star by showing he can tether his moody, brutish charisma to the center of a big Hollywood epic; Maximus at that time simply wouldn't have worked with any other actor. And Phoenix, with his reptilian insidiousness, brings a dark, perverse dimension to the proceedings that syncs up perfectly with Crowe's stolid nobility (there was no more satisfying showdown that year than that between those two). Gladiator suffers from script issues that couldn't have been fully overcome by a legendarily troubled production, but it still remains one of the last great Hollywood blockbusters before they stated churning out installments.

I'm with you. It has a big nostalgic place in my heart, but doesnt resonate much as an adult. But after the second one...it made me appreciate a lot more about it.

Haha...yeah. My memories of this film are watching it with my dad, and blasting the soundtrack over and over and over again

It is a film that I have bought again and again in different formats, the set design and CGI was impressive at the time and made me want to visit Rome even more. The soundtrack is great, one of Zimmers best in my opinion. In fact, it began playing in my head when I saw your post and hasn't stopped yet. :)

I watched Gladiator for the very first time this year. I love Siskel and Ebert, and I actually avoided the film for years because of Ebert’s review, he thought it looked dingy and was boring. I don’t know what he was smoking, because I feel the film actively avoids a lot of sword and sandal cliches. And the movie is gorgeous to look at.

I do remember enjoying it but it definitely gave off more or a movie you'd watch with your dad while knocking some beers than something you'd consider to be spectacular.

I like it fine as a popcorn movie. Great performances, well directed, memorable score but the story is pretty straightforward without much to hang onto. It was a relevant movie for me growing up since I feel like it was every other guys favorite movie. The idea of a sequel feels pointless and it doesn’t help that multiple trailers have given away major spoilers. Nevertheless a part of me is interested to see it, I guess for the spectacle and some in the cast.

I saw the original once in my teenage years and I couldn't tell you anything about it. All I remember is the fight scene where Russell Crowe stabs his opponent in the foot. I've had no desire to rewatch it and I don't get how it won Best Picture at the Oscars.
