Chipping away at this whole interview. But yeah...obviously the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut has always been mysterious for the reasons mentioned. But glad they talked about it here. What do you guys think?

Unrelated, but I just listened to your review for Queer. It actually might be my pick for movie of the year for me, but I do agree with your main criticism of the movie; about there not being enough meat on the sandwich. There was a point in the film where (spoilers) Craig is having that psychedelic experience in the jungle and you see him pressed up against the young guy and you see him giving a grasp hug, but also wavy images of their bodies intermixing with each other. I found that image powerful, but I didn't feel the movie naturally reaching a point like that. It wasn't completely jarring and unnatural, but I felt like there needed to be more scenes of the 2 guys together. Apparently there is a 3 hr cut of the movie out there. It got cut prior to its Venice premiere. I feel like those extra scenes could fill in some gaps for me personally.

I loved it. It was really interesting. I've never seen the movie but from this interview it was so fascinating how the artist being Kubrick never truly got to complete his film. I enjoyed the whole discussion I loved Quentin funny rant about what he thought about Joker 2. Really good stuff. I listened to the whole thing making dinner, finishing it and then cleaning up afterwards and still had a bit left. I was really fascinated by the ai mention also. I wish he could have expanded on thoughts on that.

He wasn't saying it in a way where it sounded narcissistic. Sounded more like the desire to complete something out of respect to an artist he admires.

Had a feeling that one would come up

I highly recommend checking into the conspiracy stuff surrounding Kubrick.

Did love their Showgirls discussion

Drew Perkins

Interesting, I didn’t know about any of this. I love the film we got but would be curious to see what Kubrick intended.

Stephen

Neither do I. His producer Jan Harlan said the only thing they changed is digitally adding more party goers to cover some of the nudity in the orgy scene for an R rating.

Scott

yea I've watched filmworker but I don't remember anything specific about whether studio tried to change eyes wide shut

There’s tons of vitali interviews that have surfaced over the last 10 years including a doc about his time working with Kubrick called “film worker”

Scott

I think dude has a lot of nerve thinking he can “finish” a Stanley Kubrick film 25 years later

Scott

Has Leon Vitali ever talked about eyes wide shut? I feel he probably has the most information on what Kubrick wanted. Unfortunately he also passed away.
