She criticises her husband and their adult son so relentlessly that neither bothers to argue with her. She picks fights with strangers and sales clerks and enumerates the world’s countless flaws to anyone who will listen, especially her cheerful sister Chantelle, who, despite their clashing temperaments, might be the only person still capable of sympathising with her.” Fan of Mike Leigh’s work. Given his age this could be his last one. * The Last Showgirl (Gia Coppola) - opening in wider release “When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, a glamorous showgirl must reconcile with the decisions she’s made and the community she has built as she plans her next act.” Stars Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd and Jason Schwartzman. Gia is Francis’s granddaughter. * The Prosecutor (Donnie Yen) “A poor young man is wrongly charged with drug trafficking after being deceived. An ex-prosecutor (Donnie Yen) investigates the case, uncovers a corrupt lawyer team's scheme, and restores justice despite obstruction from evil forces.” Donnie Yen both directs and stars as a kung fu lawyer serving justice while wearing a barrister wig. I love January movies… Lol Jan 17 * Wolf Man (Leigh Whannell) “With his marriage fraying, Blake persuades his wife Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit his remote childhood home in rural Oregon. As they arrive at the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. But as the night stretches on, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable.” I’ve enjoyed two of Whannel’s previous films - Upgrade (2018) and The Invisible Man (2020). Very curious to see what he does here. * September 5th (Tim Fehlbaum) “During the 1972 Munich Olympics, an American broadcasting team is thrust from covering sports to reporting a dramatic hostage situation involving Israeli athletes. A young producer, unexpectedly leading the live broadcast, faces difficult decisions as time runs out, rumors spread, and the hostages’ lives hang in the balance.” Stars Peter Sarsgaard and John Magaro. Jan 24 * Presence (Steven Soderbergh) “A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.” Entirely film from the ghost's perspective. Features Lucy Liu and Julia Fox (Uncut Gems).

Stephen

Presence looks really interesting. I'm a fan of Stephen Soderbergh. Even when his movies aren't great, they're always interesting and reliably "solid" the way a lot of mid budget movies used to be. Dude also never stops working and embraces modern technology in a way that's kinda refreshing when you hear most directors going "must shoot on film!"

Edward Looney

Universal’s retelling of ‘Wolf Man.’ Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence.’ Gia Coppola’s ‘The Last Showgirl.’ I’m most curious about ‘The Last Showgirl.’ For many reasons. One, it’s from another Coppola family member. Two, it’s what audiences are calling Pam Anderson’s role of a lifetime. So interested to see her in a leading role for a dramatic movie. Three, I’m from Las Vegas and the film is set there. What are you looking forward to?

Basic Penguin

September 5 is apparently getting a wide release in January. A movie that I think looks REALLY good but I think has had a hard time getting distributed due to the current situation in Gaza. Presence, also. Steven Soderbergh directing a haunted house movie from the POV of the ghost?? Sign me up immediately! Also apparently it was shot on a consumer level Sony mirrorless camera, and I’m kind of a sucker for things like that. And lastly, Flight Risk. I’m very interested in seeing this because Mel Gibson directing. But the film itself doesn’t seem like in his usual wheelhouse, and the Mark Wahlberg bald cap and southern accent has me….concerned lol
