Oscars

We will discuss a lot more in depth for the Discord hangout later on (TBD), but I just wanted to get an overall idea of what ya'll thought of the Oscar nominations.

I made a list of nominated movies I want to see: * Conclave * The Substance * Gladiator II * Maria * A Different Man * Alien: Romulus * I’m Not a Robot (short) Movies I've seen: * Inside Out 2 * Dune: Part Two * The Apprentice * A Real Pain And movies I don't want to see: * Emilia Pérez * The Wild Robot

Did not see, it does not matter to me at all.

Jacob Paul Stephey

The usual mix of "Yay!" (The Substance, Anora, The Brutalist), "Boo!" (No Daniel Craig, No Challengers Score, No A Different Man), and "Are you fucking kidding me?" (Emilia Perez x13). But I'm looking forward to the Oscars actually being a charity even this year and very much looking forward to Conan.

I used to love the Academy Awards. Then they added bogus rules. It went from being about excellence in filmmaking and acting to being about excellence in filmmaking and acting with these certain rules that need to be implemented in order to be considered at all. So, to me, they’re irrelevant.

Emilia Perez is being pushed for its political agenda but everyone actually hates it because it is pretty bad. I’m fine if Demi Moore wins actress but I’m rooting for either Fernanda Torres or Mikey Madison, who were way better in my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Emilia Perez win Best Picture and nothing else. If that happens, I hope the industry collapses under the gargantuan backlash that would cause.

i got a lot of thoughts about it: - I dont hate Emilia Perez as much as the whole movie sphere do (i actually thought it was fine) but 13 nomination is WAY too much -Challenger not being there for best Score or Editing is a crime -Inside out 2 being there is absolutely disgusting knowing that it was a wonderful year for animated features film - The substance should definitely be there in more Categories - i may be Biased but Dune should also be there in more categories at least in adapted screenplay -The suporting actor category is really good -I dont get all the nomination for A complete Unknown -No George Miller ...........

Discouraging. Last year was the best Oscars in years in terms of nominations with movies like Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, and Killers of the Flower Moon being the big contenders. I agree with the general sentiment that 2024 wasn't as good as 2023 but there were plenty of great films that got snubbed. So in other words a more typical Oscar year. Additionally, the fact that the disasterpiece that is Emilia Perez (basically Crash meets The Room) got 13 nominations is beyond baffling and further evidence of Hollywood’s obliviousness to the rest of the world.

The Wild Robot low key cleaned up in the nominations, which I am so here for! Gives me hope it will win Best Animated.

Donoharm

Probably the best crop of supporting actor nominations in recent memory in my opinion. But the Emilia Perez debacle is a joke.

Henri J. Mertens

The fact that the substance wasn’t a best sound nom is an actual crime against humanity. But it’s the Oscar’s. What can you expect?

Scott

Any possibility to review Sanctuary?

Steven Berenson

No Editing nod to Challengers is also obscene

Arthur Augustyn

The absence of Challengers for Best Original Score and Furiosa in the craft nominations is dumbfounding. I was pleasantly surprised that Coralie was nominated for Best Director. Otherwise, there were a lot of disappointing choices, and at this point, I can only hope Anora or The Brutalist can topple Emilia Pérez—because God help us.

Drew Perkins

It also got 12 nominations at the Césars lol

I don't hate Emilia Pérez as much as the mass film circle consensus (I actually remember enjoying it just fine, tho tbf, I had a theatrical experience to amplify everything), but it still baffles me that it got 13 nominations. That's pretty indicative of the sort of performative nature that's still present in the Academy. I wish Nickel Boys got more love, but that seems to be somewhat unmarketable with its whole experimental framework.
