Nerd³ builds a Tiny Town in VR in Tiny Town VR

New video is here! Be sure to watch it first as this post is gonna be spoiler city!

I'll wait for you.

...

...

Dum dee dum...

...

Finished? Ok, let's talk!

If the first video was a statement of intent then this second video was a gentle application of that intent. It's quite a bit more "normal" than anything I've got planned over the coming months but it plays as a nice comedown from last week. It's sortof like the highest point a bungee jumper hits on the way back before the rope snaps and we all go crashing into the river below together.

My initial plan for this video was to build and grief my own story in the same video. I wanted to spend hours setting up dominoes carefully to then just kick them all over at once. This idea was actually made for a different game but once I found Tiny Town VR I jumped over to that due to it's wonderful character posing. There was no script, I just wanted to ad-lib a lovely place with nice characters, memorise as much of the bullshit I was spouting as I could, and then ruin it in one swoop. I think it went well!

It's nice to be back in the editing chair and I ever so slightly showed off this week. Extra editing time means I get to add in extra stupid jokes using sound now. I'll try not to overdo it... Maybe... Oh and yes, that awful dubstep from last week isn't the theme. The videos will end on an appropriate (or sometimes inappropriate) song. It's an extra place to put a joke so I'm using it.

Slightly jokier real life sections on this one but I feel like after... that... ending the video needed a tiny pick me up at the end. I'm not here to make you miserable, not yet anyway. The real life aren't always going to make an appearance. The only lockdown is the title starting "Nerd³..." and TBH I might even swap that out if need be!

That's all for this week! As always I'll be chatting in the comments below about this here video.

See you next time!

- Dan

PS. Next week, I watch Pornography.

لو بس السبت ايي بسرعة 😪

After reading your intents with these videos I have come to love how the new, lighthearted logo is gonna contrast with the insanity that will soon be your content

Dan, you're honestly one of the only gaming youtubers I watch. I don't know why, maybe I like you. The more likely reason is that I identify with your humor, which, in getting darker (while still being very "Dan"), is getting better, IMHO. Keep doing this.

You have the spectacular talent of saying "Oh shit" like no one else can.

Addison Reilly

I love this video, the amount of detail that goes into building the town and the story that is given to all of them and as the town evolves so dose the story of the town. Even though it does go dark it's still very enjoyable. Such a great video!

Sergio Rabinovich

Jesus Christ we need more of this.

Yeah I really enjoyed it. If it does go much darker then I hope it still works.

Mike Jones

You should create a detective mystery in Tiny Town VR where there's a story told through subtle hints in the world and the person playing has to figure it out and then kill a clown.

The tone-shift in this video gave me whiplash. Delicious whiplash.

Paul Turner

Dan how much does a PC that can run VR games cost

Birchwood

It was so good to hear happy Dan, the difference in the voice is so big compare to before the break. So on a scale 1 to 10 how hardcore the porn will be next week ?

Weronika Michalska

Splendid! I left my sarcastic comment under the vid, so i'll skip it here. Cheers :)

I feel as though only one thread was brought up and built upon as you described in your intentions (The Clown) while the rest seemed to be introduced, and then only brought up again for the twist ending. The Clowns' story had a beginning, middle, and end, while characters like The Back-Flipping Granny and The Dying Axe Man only have a middle and end. Both characters have a nice, calm moment where we see them being themselves. We only see the moment things went wrong, and then the aftermath. I don't feel like there was a tranquility before disaster, just a succession of events before the twist ending. I would like to stress, I enjoyed the video, I just don't think it achieved quite what you set out to do.

This had me as a 21 year old student actually laughing out loud while I was trying so hard not to that it descended into coughing at 5 am in my parents house completely forgetting that I might wake someone up. Job fucking well done on this!

Michael Simmons

When I was a 5ish year old I would build towns out of lego/playmobile and play with them till I got bored and then cause a big accident like a car crash or something. This is just that on a slightly psychopathic level... and I like it!

Last night, I started to have one of my anxiety/nausea episodes (f**king car!), and in that state, I'd found the video hard to watch (the head movements were aggravating it). I stopped the video and watched the rest just now. I'm glad I stopped when I did, right before the twist ending, and I got to see it when I was feeling better, and able to appreciate it more. Not sure I've laughed so hard at something so dark and tragic before.

Damien Letham

What a fantastic video, very entertaining, funny and enjoyably dark at the same time. Really like the direction you are taking Dan - look forward to seeing what is coming next!

MrAndyTF

Yep, that was great! Keep it up! :D

Raphael Thoulouze

Dan, you are quite literally making the best videos you've ever made. They're fecking brilliant. Keep up the good work.

Just do you Dan, just do you. It's like everything good about your channel brought into one video; the creativity, the sarcasm, the in-jokes and then plunge into darkness. You should've said 'screw you!' to YouTube years ago! Have my applause good man.

God damnit Dan. You're making me agree with Matt... that video was quite excellent.

Nicholas Robinson

As I am a person who lives in Swindon I can confirm that living here is basically suicide

I can't wait to see what's next.

Rose Kay

Was sceptical of the last video but this one was amazing. Didn't see the ending coming till it hot me in the face. Really enjoyed and excited for next week.

Tim Wiles

Nice

Ay! Same last name!

Katelyn Campbell

Again, I love that you are now taking time to fully tell a story with your videos (even if what pushed you here was shit). But on this one I particularly like that it's basically they put Lego and Planet Coaster together in VR and made The Dan Hardcastle Happyplace Game. Also, really nice job on the angles and edits for hiding/revealing the changes you'd made. Now I have to go watch your stream of this.

Diane Frank

Holy fuck this felt like the old minecraft comic came back, but in a good way

Absolutely perfect video. Looking forward to seeing where the rest of this month takes us.

This video was so beautifully executed. You managed to go from crying with laughter to crying from sadness in one fell swoop.

Dylan Verbeeten

I'm so sorry for Draco...life is never worth wasting.

SammyToesis

I was 100% expecting a dark turn but I was still very pleasantly surprised! Been a very strong relaunch so far and dead excited about what's to come. Also scared. Very scared.

Daniel Sims

I've never enjoyed a relaunch so much before. The incorporation of the dark elements and the phone call at the end. I've been a sub for like 5 years or something. I joined when it was a Minecraft channel. I'm so so happy with how this has all gone.

I'm enjoying how well you're working darker elements into your videos, it really shows your creative ability! Absolutely looking forward to the rest of your new age videos! :)

Loving the new stuff. Cant wait for next week

Brad

If this is just the beginning then I am excited for the videos that are yet to come! How much content do you currently have planned, and how long do you have planned ahead?

And to think: it started off so fun and innocent :P I'm excited for the new stuff on the way, but anxious too: who knows how weird is too weird... though I guess that's the point, huh.

Loving the new videos. This new direction is fantastic. If you're happy making them, I'm happy watching them.

UnSafeStu

So far I'm actually adoring your new upload schedule. If it means you get a lot more time to edit your weekly videos, then it's the best idea you ever had.

Very nice Dan love then new editing really makes the videos, keep it up!

DrgnMstrAdam

How far ahead have you planned these masterpieces?

Max Rimmer

It's nice! It's good! It's fun! It's weird! It's this video you just posted!

Jeremy Abel

That video was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. A piece of art.

Matt Eden

The small sound effects always caught me so off guard. *Honk Honk*

Welf Garkisch

Very good video :) What shirt are you wearing in the end? :o

Simon Paffett

This video was definetly nothing short of genius and I loved it! I cannot wait to see what more you have planned. I wish I had more time to make stuff like this as well, but school and stuff gets in the way :/

Skylos

Amazing! Thanks for all your work!

thatonehasaki

Dan I love what you're doing even if I still don't fully understand it.

LeeJ2512

I come from Swindon... and I totally agree.

I was waiting for the twist and I was not disappointed. Thank you Dan. Thank you

That was an amazing video. #prayfordraco

Woodchip NZ

Fantastic. such a perfect microcosm of nerdcubed-ness. just great

Douglas Myers

This was masterfully done. I applaud you, sir.

Well Read Nomad

Now that was nerdcubed at its finest. Perfect fusion of one of the buildy-er completes and the dark humor that the channel is turning towards. A good combination of what we know and love and what's to come.

You are a god on earth! I can't wait for the darker videos!

Max Rimmer

This was brilliant. Quality over quantity approach is definitely showing!

What type of porn?

You sir are a masterful storyteller

Tom Chaney

I was on edge for most of the video,i have absolutely no idea what to expect anymore from you, Dan.

One of my favourite videos made by yourself. I am much preferring your approach of releasing videos weekly and choosing quality over quantity. Keep up the good work

Also, is the intro thing going to turn into an overly dark overarching subplot of black comedy goodness? (please say yes)

Stan Gaskell

I thought he was going to say that the world started to be sentient and he had no control and go somewhere with that

Dan, I just wanted to say how happy I am that your creativity has been boosted so much by the break and subsequent lack of pressure. It may have lost you some viewers, sure, but the quality is genuinely fantastic right now. Most of all, I hope you're considerably happier now.

Stan Gaskell

Loved the video! One of your best videos over, if not the best!

That was genuinely one of my favourite videos that you’ve ever done! You’re doing amazing work at the moment - keep it up!

Tristan Stubbs

If this standard of video keeps up I'm glad you have dropped down to one video a week. Keep up the good work and keep playing games you love as it shows in the videos. Or just just be savage on bad ones that works to.

Asher

Dude, your nose honk literally killed me. I laughed for a solid minute. Love your new style and can't wait for the porn. See you next week

DrunkUkrainian

I thought this was excellent! Shame you can't monetize no more but whatever you've been up to it's interesitng and creative thus far, this was perhaps one of the best videos i've seen you do in a while, please do keep it up! Looking forward to the porn week...wtf? Haha.

CarrierOfTime

Really dark and more logical story-telling than last weeks video. Overall Great to see you flex your editing muscles and really nice narrative through the whole thing. Keep up the great work!

Adam Bell

My video froze and for a moment, I thought it was a new way you were fucking with youtube. Congratulations, you've made me doubt everything.

Silver Thompson

Holy fucking shit that was amazing. I has to pause because I was laughing so hard. You're the best Dan!

Franklin Goodman

Dan, that was really good. It's nice to see your editing side shine that hard. Also, do you consider releasing the videos early for patreons?

As someone who comes from swindon, that last joke killed me. Bravo sir, bra-fucking-vo

BananaTycoon

Probably my new favorite video. Seeing you play stuff that lets you be creative is always fun, but having a little story play out in the midst of it all was unexpected and great. I can only imagine the amount work that went in to setting everything up and planing those casual reveals, especially when those reveals had to happen in VR but translate to a 2d YouTube video. Not something just anyone could pull off, congrats!.

You can really tell you are enjoying making videos again excited to see what next week brings😃😃

Evan Inness

This was great. I love this type of content, and how you play with all the tools of the game to make the most interesting video possible. Creativity is your forte, I've always thought that, and in this video you clearly proved that. I'm back in! Hyped for more!

I really liked it! I liked that it was silly, spontaneous, and the complete opposite of serious. The twist at the end was a nice touch. Nice that you actually showed the VR, and what the 'game' is capable of, as well as adding in your sprinkle of weirdness and fun. Nicely done!

Bravo. That was fucking amazing.

Adam Dodman

Lovely video, it's clear that you've spent a lot of time perfecting it, and honestly, it is! Must admit that I genuinely got sad...

Jannes Verlinde

Lastly, just want to say that if YouTube hadn't thrown that Harry Potter Kinect video at me I never would have found out about games journalism, gotten into the art of games and wouldn't be doing the college course and going down the career path that I currently am. Your videos have shown me a passion, that I never would've thought was there otherwise, that I find one of the most rewarding things in my life and that's this new way to create that the medium offers. I know the internet-lingoisation of 'Influencer' is something you hate, but you've definitely been that for me.

just barely finished, that was great. If this is the kind of content we're going to get (You making what you want how you want) with us not knowing much beyond "a new video" I can't wait for what's to come!

Daniel Auty

I really like the ending as much as the beginning. Before with the end card, it never felt like a good ending. But the song, with the logo revealing another joke, it feels complete. And Funny!

Fantastic video! Love the extra bits of editing and the general idea. Always fun to watch you in VR too, so expressive with your fake hands 😅 I think it was when then flight attendants appeared in the pool, that I thought it would be great if you kept playing normal and then random things kept happening that you’d find and then that’s what happened, which was great. I was hoping for a spooky angle, like creepy ghosts and jump scares, but that’s probably because I’m watching a lot of Scary Game Squad, so that’s what’s in my head at the moment 😂 Anyway, looking forward to seeing what comes next 😁

Andyface

one of my favourite nerdcubed videos. honestly so inventive and well executed.

Ruth

Hey Dan, I've been watching you for quite a few years now. I've never really commented or reached out to you before, as I quite enjoy passively watching your videos and streams. However, the more I thought about that over the past month or so, the more I realised that this had simply become routine for me (and I assume it had become routine for you to make those videos). That's why I finally wanted to comment today, no longer am I watching you because I find comfort in that routine - I am now watching because these recent videos (this one in particular) showcases your humor and writing ability that I signed up for in the first place. It makes me happy that you finally seem to be enjoying the content you're putting out, and that you're so actively pursuing your other interests (such as writing and game design). I think the fact that you have so many Patreon supporters is testament to the fact that people love watching you for this content. If this video was anything to go by, then we're going to be in for some incredible videos ahead! Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the previous video. But this one felt like a good transition to the new content instead of a hard 180 turn. From what I'm reading you completely planned it to be that way; to throw everyone on the first video and then bring (some) normality back in with this one. If so, that's just even more genius.

I am loving your videos and purely they just have emotion in them. I am so sad for the clown, the fence wasn’t even that spiky. Brilliant for the song outro idea I love that it’s a surprise at the end. Keep up the good work and do it at your own pace. The dark sense is just such a feeling of hard hitting comedy and everything. 🎁🎈kids will always remember him🤡

Valthexus

I wonder what's Dan's taste in porn...

Gulag

Just finished watching it. Matt was absolutely right, this is one of the best videos you have made on this channel, Dan. The entire video was phenomenal and I loved every second of it. I loved the comedy, the editing, and the dark twist you gave near the end. Thank you for making such great videos, I can't wait for more!

Filip 'PhilTheDead' Kwasniewski

Now how are we going to classify that, Lets Play/Machinima maybe???

Steven Davidson

Are you going to still be doing those podcast things every now and then on here? That's the only sort of content I see myself missing from all this; I found your MGSV videos fascinating and they're probably the bulk of inspiration for a game I'm planning.

That was, quite frankly, one of the best videos you've ever made. First of all the game looks like it could be my dream game, and has me wanting VR to become cheaper more than ever. Secondly, the video was wonderfully creative. As a LEGO lover myself, I adored the little story scenarios you came up with that you managed to weave into one big narrative. Finally, the editing was hilarious and unexpected. Draco's last words had to be the highlight. Really good stuff. Notable mentions to the IRL opening and closing, and to the end card with its ironically happy song. Apologies for the length of the comment, Dan, but I know how valuable feedback can be, and you bloody well earned it on this video. Good day to you sir.

I expected a game made just to make money and had thrown the quality and passion for the game out the window. But I seem to have been completely wrong. This actually looks like a fun game to waste some time in. If I get to a VR headset I will buy this.

Great video as always, can't wait for next weeks!

SkytechCEO

Finished the video! That ending...oh...FUCKING BRILLIANT.

Aidan Rayner

Your humor reminds me a little bit of Bo Burnham in the sense that it's dark and strange but also in a familiar upbeat way, especially with the most recent reboot, and I really dig that. It's awesome for feeling low and wanting to not pretend the world isn't shit but also enjoy it a bit, so you're awesome. Also, for everyone saying it was weirdly dark has obviously never played with Barbie dolls on a rainy day with their sister

Katelyn Campbell

10/10 love it! Keep up the good work if its not damaging you mentally :)

This is one of my absolute favorite videos you've ever made Dan, it was paced brilliantly and had me in tears laughing on more than one occasion partly because I called some of the jokes because that is exactly what I would have done and if this is just a stepping stone to even more brilliant content then I am beside myself with excitement for what's to come!

Nathan

TBH, was a bit unsure after last video, (only 9 minutes and none of the jokes really landed) but this one was fantastic, the planned parts especially. This kind of comedy content was what I subscribed for (from the Harry Potter Kinect video; probabaly the only reason I ever started getting into games content in the first place). As long as most things from here on out are a good length and packed with good jokes like these I'm in for the ride.

First half was probably some of the funniest moments I have seen from your videos. Loved the foreshadowing you did through it even if it wasn't on purpose. Than the end was dark... Matt was right, best video ever.

Tim Ackley

It was like a plays video but with so much more depth and story! So looking forward to the coming videos in the future. Fantastic! Incredible! One of your best!

That was an incredible video, the use of sound effects had me laughing all the way through. Plus each figure having a little story made it so much fun especially as it went wrong for all of them. Amazing stuff, I see why Matt said this was the best video ever

This was amazing to watch

Joël Mentor

Dan I loved this so much. As soon as I can make it to a stream you're getting as many twiddlies as I can afford. Seriously good work. Beyond phenomenal. This is the type of video I love - you having fun in a detail-filled game where you can express yourself, something casual to throw on and enjoy, Dan placing buildings and making silly little characters and oh god a clown just committed suicide from relationship troubles and I actually feel sad. All over that shit, I love it.

FlamingYeti

Not sure if I loved it or the Stockholm Syndrome is setting in

Narmatonia

This was amazing, I really love your story telling and it makes me really, as someone how hates reading, look forward to your book.

Bloody brilliant video!

Douglas Hodgson

Was that a punchline or the end of an Eastenders episode ?

Morgan

Just finished this. I'm terrified, I love it, help.

What’s the song at 18 minutes?

alex

8 and a half minutes in. Loving the new style of videos! The sound effects are fucking hilarious too. Also this game really really makes me want to get a Vive...and a PC to run the Vive. I could see myself playing this a LOT :P

Aidan Rayner

And, of course, just as I posted that, the video took a bit of a turn... And became even better! Fuck it - I'm just going to watch it again.

Agrajag

I'm only halfway through the video, but I must say that it really shows you're enjoying making the videos again, it's great! Also, it's so wonderful watching you being in your happy place. <3

Agrajag

Why're you waiting for us
