Whelp, we're boned

Alexa: Play funeral march

- Dan

Comments

I've been watching the channel since 2011. I was 7 when I watched Dan's 2nd Vlog and I've watched EVERY video since. first, it was in secret. Now? My Dad watches Dad³ and my brother watches the Toys Account. No Jon. We don't love you. <3 I've grown up with Dan, He's been there most days and honestly? The Channel, the content, the Dan... makes me happy.

Ali Shand

I've been watching you for years and your content has helped me through so tough times. I'm glad I'm finally in a position to be able to give back to you especially as YouTube are going to royally fuck things over (again!) . I hope you can always keep bringing us the content we love!!

Hannah Tapson

hopefully the 20-10% left can do something good with the site

matthew singleton

also yay i don't need to feel bad for using adblock now

matthew singleton

yeah one more thing could you do me a favor and have a look at my blog iots photography based the is a section about gaming https://matthewsingletonphotography.wordpress.com/my-hobby-in-gaming/

matthew singleton

hope things improve in time they will see that the good youtuber that are left will do great things and hopefully all the idiots will get a hefty fine and leeve you tube for ever :)

matthew singleton

It's basically culling a good 80-90% of all creators on the platform

Jack Parkin

there are people organising a walkout if you're interested. https://twitter.com/javitrino/status/1198684861206290434

Jaxom

this is a load off bollocks

$179,298,000 total across all channels, that is ridiculous.

Upped my tier to help out. Godspeed Dan.

FlaaMindO

Just made an account to support you, wish you the best, and never be scared to let us know if you need more!

Actually made a patreon to help out. Love your content hopefully it doesnt get deleted. Been here for 7 years and I want you to be around for longer. <3

Blake Fackler

If I were to support every creator that I like on Youtube, even at just the minimum, I would quickly run out of money. Indeed, I had to cancel all subscriptions four years ago due to a back injury putting me out of money, out of work, and living out of my car. I'm back on my feet, but make minimum wage. I am not only entertained by you, Daniel, but I honestly hold you in high regard in terms of integrity, honesty, and determination. I want to support you as you cut off the Youtube money. I can afford $2 a month, I hope it helps.

Daniel Beringer

I am not a lawyer, however as with everything in the United States and the FTC, we will not know what happens with this until they get rocked through the court systems. While taking on the FTC is not a great decision for a YouTube channel let alone a large company. However, someone will have to do it and everyone affected by this will simply just have to wait and watch.

Since it's "fuck YouTube" time and you're cutting monetary ties with YouTube, is it worth looking into self-hosted and decentralised video hosting options like PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org/), where it's more a network of individuals hosting their own servers that are all connected. No advertisements, but it seems you're ditching those anyway. Good luck with the financial suicide, I'll keep throwing my few bucks your way.

Hey. I’ve watched you since... idk. Years, anyway. Watched you kill multiple people because a fictional teddy bear told you, make a town where everyone is either a criminal or dead and yet somehow, you freaking out about how some guy who’s probably never even seen a mobile is still entertaining. Dan, please don’t stop being hilarious because I guy who’s name is probably Bill said creators shouldn’t make content.

I've been watching you for years and I just became a patron to support your decision to "quit youtube". I hope it works out well for you

Ben Anderson

Question. Couldn't you copyright claim your own videos and block them from the US? It would suck for people that would need a vpn or another method to watch your content but maybe that would be safest without completely nuking your channels.

Dragmire

Jim Sterling just released a video on this topic and I highly recommend you take a moment to watch it. It's a nice stress relief, looking at the issue in the most rational way possible in this stressful time.

Samppa Alatalo

Just gonna say, I find it hilarious that this effects all videos on the internet. Because with that logic this effects pornhub too, for example: cosplay videos with characters that children like or “toys”. Apparently these videos are for kids XD

I think you will be fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OBGfbSk_HE Not a Lawyer but it does make sense.

FreeQuest

Move to a service that isn't based in the US.

Wurstmann

Bruh

Why not go adult only?

y'ought to join the youtubers union. https://www.fairtube.info/en/

Jaxom

I was thinking "Oh this sounds really shitty but in practice YouTube will have to be sensible to survive" until that quote.

Narmatonia

Finally went around to upping my funding to 5$ a month. I just wish i could have more to give. I really wanna get both of your books as i missed out on the special stuffs for Fuck Yeah video games, so hopefully i can scrounge up enough to get some sort of tier for this new one. You've been the one youtuber i've bothered to keep up with for almost 10 years now i believe! Thanks for all your hard work and suffering for us Dan and Matt and all the crew <3

TO ADD TO YOUR PAIN, they just announced Half Life 3 for Virtual Reality (Half-Life: Alyx) Luckily your book has already been out long enough for fans to read it (and absolutely love it)

The person reading this is sexy and epic

Nope - We’re distributing content in the US via a US company and can be fined by US regulatory things as a result..

Mattophobia

We actually could region block, but half of our viewers are from the US so that isn’t exactly a solution - Even then YT would still make us mark them anyway.

Mattophobia

I feel like I have YouTube red... I haven’t had an ad on any of my favourite you tubers for so long. Sucks

Scott

Would buy tho

Scott

Just upped my Patreon donation, I am so fucked off with YouTube for all of this, to take such a lazy route and offload all responsibility onto creators whilst putting their hands up saying "Well we're not liable" is such a cunty move. I reckon within a year the site will be dead...

I feel sick listening to that, wtf you tube and fcc for that matter. please don't leave us dan you're awesome. Question, personality's? is nerdcubed a child friend personality? I know but do idiots?

Xavier Allegaert

Is it time to start selling your bath water?

DapperCyborg

i'd completely understand if it all had to go, but I'd be so damn sad about it, if there is anyway to have us still be able to access and you still release the odd thing here and there it I would love that so much. As soon as I get a better paying job I'm upgrading to a higher tier though!

Daniel Shenton

Hate that this is starting to really go south. Upgraded my tier to $10. Sadly, that is as much as I can really spare. Rip YouTube for real this time? maybe sort of? Maybe Rip the industry at this point.

Ash Davenport

What if you enabled restricted mode? Or would that be the same as age gating it, also is restricted mode still a thing?

Jacob Vasicek

I feel like YouTube has just continually shat on you the entire time I’ve followed you and we’re coming up on 3 or 4 years now. Wherever you go, I’ll follow. If there’s a pay wall I may not be able to subscribe all year because I make about as much as a sentient pile of sawdust while I’m at uni, but I’ll be there eventually. I sort of prefer you on twitch because it feels like a community and not just me enjoying your content with no one to talk to about it, but no archive is shit too. An idea: another channel I follow (who is also possibly very fucked by these new FCC rules) puts out some of his content on DVD. That’s probably not really a cost effective option, but maybe it’s worth looking into? Any way this plays out, at least some of us will follow you wherever you go. Your videos and your twitch chat and your advice via responding to my twiddlies has actually really helped me through some shit times, I’m not loosing that to the fucking FCC if I can help it. Much love!

I realize this is a stupid fucking idea, but have you given serious thought to uploading to pornhub? I feel like genuinely that might be the best way out of this. You could do a trial run with just one or two videos to see what happens. Maybe also look into floatplane? I don’t know. This is such a shitty situation. I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. At least us on patreon are here for the long haul!

Benjamin Poulson

There is a subscription service for science videos called Nebula. It's run by Wendover Productions and like three or four others. They've also started accepting other YouTubers too, but it is science, tech, engineering focused.

Triple Eye

Has Helen Lovejoy been let loose everywhere, "think of the children!!!". Why does everything have to be suitable for kids these days! I love the billing the parents email. How about putting mature adds on mature videos, sofa adds, gym adds, sex toy ads?

On a different topic from my previous comments. I am going to up my pledge a bit, it wasn't much to begin with and it still won't be but hey, every bit helps right?

Jackie

Please don't let this deter you, continue making the wonderful content you've been creating. I've been here since the beginning and I'll be here to the end. This channel has and always be my number one favorite channel.

I'm sorry Youtube has shat on you so hard and for so long. Whatever you have to do, we'll support you. If everything has to go to save you thousands, we'll be sad. But we'll understand.

Alexander Lewis

Is it possible for you to find a video player that could be embedded directly into the Nerd³ website? It'd be hell to get all the videos over, but at least archival could be a thing.

Adam Gaffney

Would it perhaps be worth considering Floatplane again? You'd earn revenue from subscriptions, and they'd be be able to mark the channel as neccessary to satisfy the FTC requirements.

i really like the idea of hosting everything on the website. i definitely would still stick around for the nerdcubed show. oh and if you're reading this wtf is mysterious project x, i mean if you're going to take over the world i'd obey

James Oxley

I sincerely hope you will be able to continue to create the fun content I know and love from you, I've been following you from way back long enough I don't even remember when, and I've loved your channel and the stuff you did for all those years. I've never been one to comment or chat in the streams much, but I really just feel like saying something now. Seeing as you've gone through quite some youtube shit I'd like to imagine you'll find your way to survive, maybe that won't be on youtube or whatever, but I trust it'll be fine in the end. I've upped my support tier to the bigger fan tier, since I feel like I can afford that as a student now without noticing it too much, and I hope to see you keep creating for as long as you can. I hope to one day watch a doctor who episode written by you (hopefully even more than one episode), but for now I'll just be saving up some money for the collectors edition of the paradox paradox. Anyway, best of luck with dealing with all this bullshit

Sam Lamboo

Options: a) publish on pornhub b) publish on some sort of subscription service c) make YouTube videos for "the exposure" and take no money because "hey, I thought we were friends, why would it cost anything?"

I propose a solution: delete youtube and operate purely by post! People would send letters requesting a specific video with money enclosed and you would post the video, which has been taped onto VHS, to the return address. That way you can continue to make videos and turn a profit!

Alex Myagkov

I started watching back in 2013, when I was 12; I just turned 18.

Harry Cook

I don't get the whole "if you say it's not for kids but we decide it is, you get dicked with a fine" part of it.

StringQueen

Ayyyy, growing up with this channel, defo talking about me. Been watching since I was 14 😁 now 18 and getting olddddd

Siana Brooker

YouTube being fined and implementing this, is like when YouTube was sued by Viacom and implemented ContentID,

Shawn Lindsay

Or just mark all your videos as not kid friendly and edit them to have "fuck" in the title.

YourJelly

Oy. I first saw this from Emily Graslie (Brain Scoop), because she and many other education channels are also screwed by this, but I hadn't heard all the idiotic details. Well, we're here. Please let us know before torching. And sorry my govt is currently run by soulless anti-logic assholes.

Diane Frank

Could you not keep with the editted videos by premiering and uploaded them to twitch?

thatdangerousplatypus

Surely cos your in the uk so the legislation would be different over here

Wouldn't the FCC need jurisdiction in United Kingdom to be able to prosecute outside the USA?

FreeQuest

Question: If you just mark it so your videos are not available in the US and be safe from this? I am from the US myself, but I would be fine having to use a VPN to watch your videos.

YourJelly

The problem with the FDC being so vague, is that ANY video game that's not rated 18 or 15 could be 'for kids'

Rowan Mackenzie

I reshuffled my Patreon pledges and upped yours. I've been watching your shit for forever, and it sucks that you're being put in this position by some shitty agency from a country you don't even live in. Could you run this on an EU hosted platform? The FTC can't exactly fine a UK citizen running videos on an EU service... Does anyone know which is the best way to support a creator? Twitch, or here on Patreon?

Jochem

Well, it's about damn time. Not that I've been actively hating your youtube videos, but youtube is just a shit platform, and it should die

Rowan Mackenzie

I'm only about the third of the way through, so I don't know if this is mentioned, but, I went to a horror convention a few weeks ago. There were kids there dressed as Jason Vorhees, Pinhead, Michael Myers. I don't mean 15 and 16 year olds, like 8 or 9. Do these characters appeal to kids? Would me doing a Friday 13th fan film be classed as appealing to children? Because it obviously appeals to some children. Honestly, Dan, Matt, get Youtuber friends together. People like Ashens, CheapShow, Barry, Martyn. Move collectively to Pornhub or Dailymotion. Say fuck as much as you want. It's what the fans want.

Brett Smith

Also why does the FTC give a fuck what words you use online, pile of wank.

Ross Truscott

So up jumps my pledge. Keep working on the escape rout, Dan, because this ship is on fucking fire.

Well Read Nomad

I filled the room with apples and then accidentally right clicked, they all disappeared

Kim Clarke

If YouTube would let smaller channels region-block, like the big company channels are able to, then you could at least just block the US and in theory cut out the problem altogether, though I imagine that would still suck in terms of adrev and views taking a hit.

PointyHairedJedi

This is fucked. I wouldn't mind paying for a higher patreon tier if it means having videos maybe on here, even on vimeo, or any other alternative site. Hope this eventually works out because its utter bullshit

Omar AlHashmi

Youtube really is a fucking shadow of its former self. What a joke of a company, they really just dont seem to understand their audience at all. Also have you ever seen the shit thats posted to youtube kids? that stuff is the real issue, not creators who occasionally say cunt.

Ross Truscott

YouTube really has been running headlong towards the bottom of the shitpile ever since Google took over. The worst part of ALL of this shitshow is that the reason this is happening seems to be because Google knowingly sold targeted market about and aid towards under 13s. They did this knowing it was in direct violation of the COPPA regulations. They got their hands caught in the cookie jar, caught red handed doing something that everyone agrees is a shitting thing to do. BUT! (And this is the real kicker) but, they somehow managed to do the legal equivalent of a 10" limbo and managed to dodge the bullet so effectively that they somehow got the FCC to agree to Google getting a small financial penalty (in respect to how much cash Google has sloshing around) and that they could somehow unburden themselves of any responsibility for this in the future and put the onus squarely on the creators. From the perspective of someone how watches a shit tonne of YouTube videos on things like Lego, action figures, games etc. this seems like YouTube unloading both barrels into their bloated and diseased head, but realistically this is only a very small part of YouTube, and all the makeup channels, the crappy karaoke channels and God only knows what else, will be fine, and YouTube will continue it's fetid journey as a bloated corpse floating down the river Stix towards oblivion. Basically this sucks, and it (YouTube) is never going to get any better.

I have moved to a higher tier to support you during this crap. It's not much but i hope it helps. YouTube in general is fucked

Georgina Ivey

This is going to be interesting from a game industry point of view. Play throughs are considered more reliable now than traditional media as to whether a game is worth playing.

Kim Clarke

This is complete bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.

Experience Cookie

Christ this is fucking shit. If you want my advice, which you don't, I would lay low and see what other creators do - it feels like this will cause at least a little bit of a media shit storm, as it won't just affect creators, it will affect the majority of companies as most use YouTube. Hope you're okay.

Stan Gaskell

god what a mess! as long as, worst case scenario, the videos are all still available *somewhere*

elis one l

Nebula has a section for gaming, that could be an option. The subscription is pretty small and I'd definitely pay it to watch your videos

Septimus ii

The money is going to his staff. He has multiple people working for the channels that keep his company going. Dan even said in the podcast none of the patreon money goes to him anymore. He's living off his book royalties, the patreon, YouTube and Twitch money goes to his staff. Yes, I agree it sounds odd that his staff require so much of the things bringing in the companies income, but we don't know every single bit of money coming in from each source.

Vaughan Davies

I've been watching since I was around 10......... I am now 16 and part of the 7.8 %. I would like to formally say fuck you to youtube. you are killing yourself and causing possible emotional and mental damage to your creators. Dan, Keep doing what you enjoy. At this point, I say move away from youtube ASAP as if you don't it will bite you back (Again). I will support you wherever you go. Keep going. keep strong.

Alister Magnus Gray

This fucking sucks

Vaughan Davies

I reckon the true test to see if it will screw over the gaming channel is to wait and see if Minecraft or Fortnite videos get targeted across the website. I have a feeling the FTC isn't going to touch gaming content, or if they do, they will try some broad stroke effort to make sure gaming content isn't pushed to kids. I highly doubt that your channel will be targeted either, it will be the first one to hit the news cycle, and that will most likely be either a big named channel that did something stupid or a content farm one that mixes Minecraft with suggestive themes or the like. At that point, the line will be drawn somewhere.

Have you come across the Floatplane platform? It was created by A tech YouTube channel (LinusTechTips) that wanted to escape the cesspit that is YouTube... www.floatplane.com

this really fucks everything up because i'm doing a complete marathon of everything you've ever done, or appeared in, and there are some videos that are only on youtube. If you're going to destroy your YouTube channel, please make your website a little more user friendly, upload every single second of content (including unofficial nerdcubed live videos), add a filter by date, so that we don't have to scroll all the way down to your 2013 videos, maybe add a "collection" feature, like "the park building collection", as we can't do a definitive search for parkitect, rollercoaster tycoon 3 and planet coaster all in one. If you can do that, it'd tie up every issue i have with your leaving youtube.

SeventhEmberXander

maybe vimeo?

Ashley klinkhamer

God fucking damnit, I'm going to up my pledge.

Kloovt

Little bit awkward listen to someone complain they are doing something "unpaid" when they have over 3,000 people supporting financially them on Patreon alone... Like what do you think these people are giving you money for?!

i did the same

Surely this goes against 1st amendment rights by being fined by saying something is not kids friendly right? Please correct me if I’m wrong but a content creator on YouTube owns their own content right? So surely the government is not able to decide who a private business owner can and cannot show their content for. I’m going to bring up an example and this example is of something terrible and I do not agree with it but it does show that the law is on your side. A Baker in 2018 refused to bake wedding cakes for LGBT+ couples and the courts ended up siding with the baker because it was his private business and he was allowed to choose who to serve. I’m sorry for bringing up a terrible thing but again correct me if I’m wrong but does this not show that the law is on your side in this matter?

I hope you find a way to keep your video and find a way continue making stuf, be it on YouTube or elsewhere, it would genuinely be sad lose your videos. Know that I will go wherever you are, I will be there also...

Craig (CraigUntlNytTym) Penfold

Will be more than happy raise my patrion amount if it means I still get to watch nerd on Twitch or you upload edited videos to your own site. x

Thanks for keeping us involved, guys. I started watching this channel when I was like 13, and its fucking awful that other people sent gonna be able to grow up with this content, too. Hope this shit gets sorted out quickly without too much collateral. Thanks again, guys.

Upped my pledge a bit to support you all, I'm with you whatever you decide to do Dan!

The FTC are we talking about the United States Federal Trade Commission?

Would he even be able to do it though? Without since video of Rebecca pegging him?

MYTH

The FTC has a comment period about this COPPA ruling. Please let them know how you feel. https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2019/10/ftc-extends-deadline-comments-coppa-rule-until-december-9

Ryan Earles

Also just post a torrent link for all videos now? Maybe in an rss feed on the website? Who knows. If everything had to get deleted a torrent of the channel is a must for sure.

Jackie

I guess I'm gonna try and archive the toys channel in a day or two when I get back home. Don't have the hard drive space for the main channel but toys seems to be more at risk atm anyway.

Jackie

Same lol

MYTH

Welp

Jackie

But Dan, has anyone donated a million dollars yet? Wasn't that the trigger for deleting the channel? Lol. But for real, YouTube keeps adding more turns to the labyrinth of content creation; I love using it for your content because I can never seem to catch the twitch strands, but it is being almost too toxic to withstand. Id understand lol

MYTH

How does YouTube exist after this is implemented? Literally any video at any time can fuck a creator. It's not worth the risk for any creator to keep using it.

Okay, so I know it was probably a joke, but honestly, moving to pornhub might be the best move, cause they seem like they actually give a shit about content creators, and there is no way the FTC could actually say that any video on pornhub are for kids, cause it's fucking called pornhub for a reason. Seriously, moving your stuff to pornhub might be the best move. Probably talking out my ass, but still.

I for one was born around the turn of the century and my whole life i have been really interested in things that ive always been told are “not good for kids” and i turned out the same as any other kid my age

"We have quite an old demographic" yes hello, I am old

Andyface

Is it only me who has realised that the laws on “kid friendly” stuff in most countries is based on the ethics of the past and since the 90s what kids (meaning preteens to early teens) watch, like and are entertained by has changed drastically but the laws that govern it are still based in a world where kids never swear or are exposed to stylised violence or basically anything kids are really into

I’m so sorry this is happening to you know that you will have our support throughout

DapperCyborg

My heart sank...

Collin Regalia

Well. Fuck. I vote for pornhub. Worked for Jesse Cox :p
