As Dan mentioned but summarily dismissed, the black birds eat worms, so why shouldn't a hawk eat blackbirds? Raptors (predatory birds) are struggling all across the world, much more so than the few birds that are able to coexist with humans more readily, such as blackbirds.

Yeah and I know it isn't fun but it's not the end of the world. I'd be interested to know what Dan did with the dead bird, maybe he feed it to one of his pets or left it in the forest for the wildlife to find.

Nah I'm gonna stick up for the sparrow hawk here. What's the point of stopping it eating a bird it's already killed? You're not responsible for the wild animals that come into your garden, just let nature do it's thing and clear up the remains once once the hawk's finished if necessary.
