From The Desk of Nerd³ - April 2025 Edition

Dearest Patreons,

My book, The Paradox Paradox, is here.

It’s sitting on my desk right now, the swirly reds and blues of the dust jacket wrapping five years of work up in a neat bow. Well, not that neat of a bow. On the screen in front of me the audiobook sits in an editing suite, thousands of little edits splitting multi-hour recording sessions into pieces. On my phone, emails pop-up and are batted back within moments, like a dull game of whack-a-mole. Dotted about my desk are twenty or so post it notes, each one a vital reminder of a task, an immediate deadline, or an editing note. (“DON’T FORGET MONO R” one helpfully yells at me.)

Yes, my book is here, but that’s not the end of it. With Fuck Yeah, Video Games, the release kicked off a book tour, then a fair few months of finishing off the unique backer rewards before the to-do list was all ticked off. A lot of work to “finish” the book, but I knew everything that lay ahead. With Paradox, the publisher collapsed a month before the release date, and a new company has swept in to release it. So, now what?

Here's what I know. The publication date of The Paradox Paradox is the 17th April and that remains unchanged. That’s the date that the book is considered officially out. Will people receive their copies then?

No.

At least, I hope not. I’ve yet to sign a single copy, despite a plan to sign bookplates instead to speed things up. The moment the bookplates land on my doorstep, which I’m hoping is this week, I’m firing up OBS, streaming the entire signing process, then booking in a pickup ASAP. I don’t actually know how many copies I’ve sold, I think about 4,000, but I can sign about 500 prints an hour so it should be easily doable. Then, the backer rewards. No idea on these at all. I’ve sent off detailed notes, a wonderful artist has been commissioned, but that’s the last I’ve heard of it. Even the audiobook, recorded by yours truly (with Mr Stuart Ashen as the footnotes) is running late. At least this one is on me, as I try and squeeze recording and editing time in amongst all of the above and moving house simultaneously. As you can probably tell, this entire process has been more than a little frustrating, and also why I was insistent that the eBook release early. For a time, I worried that might be the only version to ever release.

But, eventually, the physical book will be in your hands. Five hundred and eight pages of adventure, joy, broken hearts and time travel. Finally, at that point, I hope beyond hope that it will have been worth both the work and the wait.

Until next time,

Daniel

Xx

PS. I am super thrilled by how CHUNKY it is mind.

PPS. Oh, and I officially become a Doctor Who writer this month as well with the release of Short Trips Volume 13: Tales from the Vortex. That’s been so lovely and smooth I almost forgot about it!

Ah wait, actually read the article this time, Oops! 🤦

Hi everyone, I know this post is like a month old but what is the story with Unbound and Paradox Paradox? Will the physical copy arrive or am I better buying it from somewhere else? I paid for it when it was still being funded. Not a criticism of Dan at all just really looking forward to reading the book!

Matthew (MJ) Sweeney

Has anyone received their copy yet?

Adski1712

This is outrageous how dare you be late on everything! Is something no one who ordered the book would say because you’ve built an audience who want quality products instead of quickly available products.

"But, eventually, the physical book will be in your hands" Imagine my surprise reading this, when my Waterstones preorder arrived last Friday!

THEonlyMAILMAN

I can’t wait to one day come across this in a random bookstore and buy it totally forgetting that “that name looks oddly familiar” until I start reading

Wynter

Will it be in Waterstones on the 17th?

Matthew Oliver

got the ebook a few months ago, started reading and promptly realized this was 100% a book i wanted to read the physical version of because of the footnotes. pre-ordered and cannot wait to finally read it when it does get here!

Maggie A.

I’m loving the ebook version and, as excited as I am to have the physical edition, I can and will happily wait until then. Life takes priority, Dan, and I hope it gets significantly smoother for you all xx

Natalie Cairns

Stupid American here who ordered a signed book with art, will the (horrendous) tariffs impact me receiving my book and art? Will I have to pay more once it arrives? Or is that a TBD thing?

Michael Duntz

Looking forwards to getting my physical copy of The Paradox Paradox. Read the eBook as soon as I got it, and it was pretty damn good ;-) I can only speak for myself, but no worries Dan, whenever you have time, I'd rather you got you, Rebecca and your animals sorted, before you worried about the book being sent out to me. You getting your home and family sorted has to take priority. Hope you get it all sorted out relatively easily. Gotta say, just like Ashens, you only went and made the books different sizes. Grr! ;-) At least they are almost the same. Bloody Ashens made his books hugely different sizes and it irritates the hell out of me :-p

Baz Poulton

so ready to actually read it.

Ruth

Dawn I feel like I missed a few chapters (pun not intended but appreciated)

Alex Ty

So excited to finally read it

Mia Rolfe

I absolutely loved the ebook and I can’t wait for my partner to be able to read it too (he’s an audiobook-only reader)! I’ve been singing its praises to him for months!

I am so unbelievably hyped, this has been a absolutely huge effort from pretty much everyone involved. Well done!

Keir Davies

Is it possible to order the audiobook now/later? Looking forward to reading the ebook :-)

Lewis

I know I'm late to the party but is there anyway to still order a signed copy of The Paradox Paradox? Also will you be visiting Northern Ireland on the book tour? 👀

Rachael Collins

Congratulations Dan, this is a wonderful achievement. It's incredible how far you've come since I started watching your channel over 11 years ago! Can't wait to read it!

Jamie

It's a different house and a different shelf than when I first heard about it 5 years ago but goddamn that thick beautiful book has it's home waiting for it proudly in my living room ❤️ Well done for getting through the mountain of shite to get to this point Mr. Cubed, I'm itching to read all 508 pages

Sam Ph. (SalmonSun)

Ashens as the footnotes is an INSPIRED DECISION and I am here for it. 💛

Jason Artemis ‘Arty’ Winstanley

It’s funny I was just about to see if there is any update on the book, I’m being deployed to Poland in may for 6 months and was hoping to take it with me …. Fingers crossed
