From The Desk of Nerd³ - October 2024 Edition
Added 2024-10-07 17:59:17 +0000 UTCDearest Patreons,
This month I’d like to talk about the five biggest mistakes that small business make, and how I’ve managed to avoid all/most/some of them.
1) Not writing a business plan
Unsurprisingly, I’ve never written a business plan for Nerd³ Mega Global Corp Inc, as it’s only really a business so the taxman doesn’t leap out of a tree and abduct me while I walk the dogs. However, I’ve recently subscribed to the belief that you should never put off anything you can do in five minutes or less, so we’ll do it now.
Executive summary
Daniel. 5′11″. I was found in a skip. At school I used to stick entire pencil cases shaped like fizzy drinks up my nose. This continued until my 20s when I started all of this instead of being proper.
Business description
Pass.
Marketing and sales plan
Step 1: Play games.
Step 2: Make videos.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit.
Competitive analysis
I’m not very competitive, although I did once win a Soulcalibur II tournament at secondary during charity week. I’d say a 3/10.
Operating plan
Cut patient open and go from there.
Smashed it mate. Onto the next point.
2) Not investing in organic marketing
Well, I did this one. I took a sharpie into the local M&S and wrote my website on every organic vegetable I could find. Now my name AND photo can be found by the entrance and everyone sees it, especially the security guard. You can’t put a price on that.
(Actually, they made me pay for the veg so I can put a price on it. £773. Ludicrous price, I should have hit up the big Tesco.)
3) Undercharging for your services
Your time is valuable and you spend it watching me fight a tsunami, pretend to be a Christmas wizard, or (spoilers for Saturday) open a one mile long pack of trading cards. If anything, I’m overcharging.
4) Brand Inconsistency
Yeah, okay that one’s on me.
5) Hiring Friends and family
The biggest no-no of companies is this. Never ever hire friends or family. This is a terrible rule for two reasons. The first is that if you don’t hire friends and family, then all the money goes to icky strangers who’ll spend it on meth, buying multiple copies of PS5 exclusive Concord, or just sticking it all up their bum, hand included. The second reason why this rule is rubbish? There’s no allowance for people you work with becoming friends or, in Matt’s case, family.
In December, Matt will be leaving Nerd³ after ten years, only two of which he’s been offering to resign for. I’ve said it before that money is tight, but it wasn’t until recently that I realised how bad things had gotten. The past few weeks have been a flurry of panic, frustration, arguments, apologies and hard decisions, but there really was only one choice. 91% of our post-tax money goes to wages and Matt doesn’t directly bring in money. You can only put off calls like this for so long.
I lied earlier. Nerd³ started as a business simply so I could give money to my friends and family. As I’ve said before, growing up in poverty does stuff to your brain, and the moment I struck gold with YouTube I knew I had to share it with as many people as I could. First there were six of us, then, as money tightened, we became four, then three, now two.
For Matt and I, I’m hopeful that our friendship will continue. I think it will, but you can never be sure in the long term. I’ll never speak to Tracey again, yet I celebrate Christmas every year with Wot. Maybe this is why they say you should never hire friends or family, because of days like these…
Anyway, enough of the sad old man. What does this mean for you lot? Well, first and foremost, the prints will continue. Matt has one more set to ship out that we’re just waiting on stamps for and we’ve just had the months after that arrive, ready to be signed. There will need to be a flurry of logistics at some point to move a pallet of mailers and a label printer over, then after that Rebecca will be running the entire show. I should have an update on that later this month, along with the public Trello launch so you can track the progress of them.
Videos shouldn’t change, and the credits will continue to be at the start and end of them. In fact, you may have noticed that I took the opportunity to create some new templates which premiered in the Cyberpunk video. I might have missed a few names, but they should be back in soon as I get used to Patreon’s confusing backend. I also really need to remember to do the Twitch credits too... I’ll add it to the to-do list.
Essentially, everything should continue as normal up front, but as we’re shifting a third of the company about behind the scenes it might take a while to get everything running smooth. Matt did a lot of work for this company and taking on that workload is going to be difficult. Bear with us while we sort it all out, and give Matt a follow so you can see what’s next for him.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to check some trees for taxmen. They’re everywhere this time of year.
Take it sleazy,
Daniel

2024-10-08 18:17:18 +0000 UTCHad a tear in my eye reading this it is so sad that Matt is leaving and I can't imagine the hard decision that had to be made. Thank you for everything that you have done Matt and thank you for sending the prints. It's going to be sad when the next set comes knowing that it would be the last ones Matt sends. Wishing Matt all the best for the future and looking forward to his streams again. Take Care Matt Xx It would be great to have a final road trip stream if that's good for everyone. Wishing Daniel and Rebecca all the best for the future with continuing NerdCubed. We will support you all the way and look forward to future things. Please take care of yourselves though Xx

2024-10-08 14:17:36 +0000 UTCDevastated to hear Matt is leaving the company. He has been such a huge part behind the scenes for so long. Good luck to Dan and Rebecca while picking up his work, and good luck to Matt with his future endeavours. Wishing the best for you all!

2024-10-08 09:32:47 +0000 UTCDan has long held his opinion on sponsors. We all know he really doesn't care about making money beyond what he needs, and I think he got very jaded by the period of YouTube where many were massively selling out and doing sponsorship deals for things which were a bit dodgy. But I think it is a shame that Dan didn't do sponsors as, especially on YouTube, it's very possible to do niche sponsorship deals with products and organisations that you already support, then it's just a win win all round. Gav from Slow Mo Guys has been sponsored by the makers of bits of kit he uses. But hey ho.

2024-10-08 06:56:49 +0000 UTCMatt crushed it. I sincerely hope alongside everyone that we still see him around, and that that starship you crashed into a star can let him tour the universe - lord knows he's earned it. (Also can't wait for Matt to start streaming competitively against you - in the friendly way, of course... ..baby steps.)

2024-10-08 06:55:32 +0000 UTCI am so disappointed to hear this news :( I know the community loves to tease Matt, but in the end he is genuinely an amazing person. I am devastated by the news. I wish Matt luck in all his future work. I hope this doesn’t mean that collabs with Jon and Matt will never happen again!! You three are fantastic in videos and I love you all.

2024-10-08 04:54:23 +0000 UTCThank you Matt for all you did around this place and keeping the roof from collapsing in completely. Good luck with your future endeavours and hopefully you can appear spontaneously in a podcast from time to time.

2024-10-08 01:43:17 +0000 UTCMany thanks to Matt for all the hard work we never saw. And good luck to both Dan and Rebecca for all the hard work they’re now going to have to pick up.

2024-10-08 01:15:09 +0000 UTCThanks for all you've done Matt. Still going to keep the anti monarchy rants fresh in my head and all the times you had to explain things to Jon in Podcats. Also thank you for mailing the many prints out to me and loads of others. You'll be missed 💔🖤

2024-10-07 23:46:52 +0000 UTCSo sorry to see you go Matt! We love you, and I hope we still see you around in some form in front of the microphone, collab-ing or otherwise! I hope you all remain on good terms in that way. I second the suggestions to have some kind of last hurrah if that feels right to you all. Best of luck finding something to fill the void Matt, you have an amazing skillset! Also, if anyone's reading this and has a few quid spare, maybe consider visiting his ko-fi page :) Thanks Dan & Rebecca for persisting as long as you could, I hope the good ship Nerdcubed stays steady for a good while <3

2024-10-07 22:52:30 +0000 UTCThank you Matt for everything you've done for N3, here's too a fun future hopefully, and a continued chaos of N3 LLC, the Trello has me genuinely excited and I can't imagine how chaotic and hard it's gonna be in the coming weeks let alone the previous months. Thanks to all three of you to be honest ❤️
Shane Rodgers
2024-10-07 22:42:12 +0000 UTCA huge thank you to Matt for everything you've done over the years! I really hope we continue to see you around the N3 servers. I can't wait to see what you do next, and will be more than glad to drop a couple dollars into your patreon fund. Thank you for everything Matt. (I must say I think I'm behind on the N3 lore as I didn't realise Dan wasn't in contact with Tracey still! That's very unfortunate to hear, and I really hope you manage to keep in touch with Matt!)
Lauren Clarke
2024-10-07 22:02:40 +0000 UTCThis is honestly so unexpected and genuinely gutting even for me, I can't even imagine what it is like for everyone actually involved. Thanks Matt for being an awesome person who has always been so clearly invested in the company and Dan/Rebecca as people and for going above and beyond what most other people would've. ❤️ Please be gentle with yourselves and, as much as is possible, give yourselves time and space to work out what the company's workflow looks like now. ❤️
GoldenGigginox
2024-10-07 21:26:48 +0000 UTCIf you could rewind would you skip writing a book and focus on YouTube? Wouldn't one or two sponsored videos cover Matt's wages? Just look at all of Jon's sponsored Stellaris videos, we don't look down on him for that.
DerekM
2024-10-07 21:25:38 +0000 UTCWait this is actually so sad.... I get it's a running joke to take the piss out of Matt but the fact he's leaving the team is so upsetting. Thank you Matt for all the hard work you've put in for wrangling Dan and being the business manager. Dan and Rebecca, I hope you are both doing okay and know that we will all be here to support you for as long as we can❤️❤️

2024-10-07 20:47:18 +0000 UTCWell...poop. That's sucky news. I hope Matt's OK and that your friendship continues, but that's must super suck for him. For you also, that must suck, having to break a professional relationship with a friend and not be able to provide a job for him. Huge thanks and props to all his efforts over the years and I hope he lands on his feet 🤞♥️ likewise with the transition of his responsibilities to you two, I hope that goes relatively smoothly.

2024-10-07 20:16:16 +0000 UTCThanks for everything Matt!!

2024-10-07 20:10:46 +0000 UTCI'm sad to see Matt go, his commitment to running NerdCubed behind the scenes over all these years has been nothing short of inspiring. I'm hopeful that we will still see him on Podcats when it eventually returns. PS: If you're reading this Matt, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a moderator for the NerdCubed Twitch channel, it's been and continues to be a fun and fulfilling experience!

2024-10-07 19:35:39 +0000 UTCTalk about burying the lede. I'm going to miss Matt, you and Jon pissing him off was always the highlight of my month. Did you also let Mike go or will you catch up with DW at some point?
PietDeVries
2024-10-07 19:20:37 +0000 UTCOh god I didn't expect the news that Matt would be leaving too affect me as much as it has. It is a shame but I wish him the best of luck on whatever he moves to and I'm so greatful for everything he's done! I hope we still see him around for podcats and maybe a patreon podcast. We shall miss you matt!
Ethan Pender
2024-10-07 19:00:00 +0000 UTCThanks to Matt for everything he's done! Dan, Rebecca, have you considered a digital print tier maybe? So people who don't feel comfortable sharing their address, but still want to view the art up close and personal, can support you more and at a slightly comfortable level?
Jude Noss
2024-10-07 18:53:40 +0000 UTCThanks for all the amazing and unseen work you've done Matt! Also on a more personal note thank you so much for helping me out with print address shenanigans! Would also love farewell livesteam/roadtrip that other have suggested if it works for you guys too!

2024-10-07 18:46:22 +0000 UTCI'll be sorry to see Matt go, it's a bit hard imagining the channel without him anymore. I'm sure it's a little hard for all of you but hopefully he'll still pop up occasionally and I wish him nothing but the best wherever he ends up. #ThankYouMatt

2024-10-07 18:40:58 +0000 UTCThank you Matt for all you're hard work and determination over the years, I'll never forget the 10 year anniversary stream which I'm pretty sure took a few years off a lot of people's lives. I hope the future is bright for you and good luck!

2024-10-07 18:27:54 +0000 UTCReally sad to see Matt leave, very unfortunate that it has come to this. Love that you still celebrate Christmas with wot. I can just imagine you sat there doing your own personal Christmas themed Tubecasts 🌲🌲

2024-10-07 18:24:07 +0000 UTCThis can't have been an easy decision to make and I wish the best for all of you <3 Certainly the end of an era, but hopefully this can help lead to the beginning of a new one

2024-10-07 18:23:02 +0000 UTCThat's fair, it's a good thing for Jon tho I'm sure. I hope Matt can at least appear on the patron podcast once a year (you two have such great chemistry together ( I mean even the trio of Jon, Matt and you, y'all need to be the ones to take over the grand tour)

2024-10-07 18:18:11 +0000 UTCIt's an unfortunate thing, but I suppose in this economy it needed to happen even though we really didn't want it to. Times will be tough in the coming future but that's what we are here to do, support you, continue to show our appreciation for the work you are putting in, and of course giving you some fucking money. (seriously thought, I feel like I will never be able to repay you for not only the years of entertainment, but also being an amazing and inclusive host of one of the only communities I actually involve myself in, because I feel safe and valid.) So thank you, I wish the best for Matt, even though I will be watching their career with great interest. -Lea

2024-10-07 18:13:25 +0000 UTCMatt is an incredible and accomplished guy and I somewhat know what he's feels, it's a sad situation all round. I had an incredibly close relationship with my former boss and after a hard December of us trying to turn things around, I was let go in April, only told about it in March. He admitted that he should've gotten rid of me months ago and felt awful firing a protoge and, essentially, a friend. It was rocky for a bit. I won't lie even though I could understand his feelings and obviously knew the financial situation, the swiftness of the firing felt like a betrayal and my relative financial insecurity whilst he kept working there hurt, and dear god it was stressful, but now we're very much still friends and he means the world to me and I him. I do hope you and Matt can and do work through it and stay in touch, but obviously that's all behind the scenes and for you both to sort out 💚 Nevertheless, I've followed his twitch and look forward to following his new chapter and continuing to support you and Rebecca. With love - a long time lurking viewer and patron who never comments xD

2024-10-07 18:09:09 +0000 UTCI always thought Matt would leave the company in a body bag, having died of some horrific accident only he could’ve had happen to. It’s a shame but times change and so must N3, Matthew’s hour is over now the clock is striking, well it’s striking the pain receptors of those who now have to do his work quite frankly. Best of luck in his future pursuits, no doubt he’s picked up a hefty enough resume by now to get a job anywhere that’s hiring with all he’s done over the years.
Daddy Driffill
2024-10-07 18:08:11 +0000 UTCNot sure yet. Honestly though, if both Matt and I were killed by monsters the main problem would still be Jon trying to find time in his schedule. :p

2024-10-07 18:07:41 +0000 UTCWow, I never expected to lose Matt but it’s beautiful that this community man has become your family and will hopefully continue to be family. So many fucked up things in the world, and it’s not just affecting things I can ignore anymore. Truly a sad day.

2024-10-07 18:07:18 +0000 UTCEnd of an era #thankyoumatt p.s. as a brand enthusiast, I'd say the N³ brand's brazen inconsistency is consistent in itself
