Falling into Dark Judgement

Dear Insane Children,

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our Narrative Crowd Design discussion last week. And to all of you who sent follow-up comments and feedback. Lots of thinking is being inspired by your input. And we'll have a follow-up on all of that soon.

In the meantime, the art team continues to produce and refine images taken from the early sections of the Narrative Outline. Like the image above from Norm - a tighter version of the "Alice vs. Judgement Boss" illustration. This is now ready for Omri to color. The final product... it's going to be amazing, isn't it?

We're also seeing some early sketches from Adam for the opening page of Chapter 1 in the Design Bible. This is an image inspired by a sketch from Alex. And is meant to represent Alice's descent into the first section of the story - the start of her journey.

We were discussing which of the four images best represents the fall into darkness.

What do you think? A, B, C, D? Which is your favorite?

Falling into Dark Judgement

Comments

I'm for C or D.

Greyson Kehm

D!

A and D combined would be sick

Abelwyn Connelly

A

Gabriele Gambucci

C or d but on mobile its pretty dark

It's going to be D for me

D if the stuff in the bottom will become tentacles :D

NecromancerforLife

D gets my vote

Definitely D, but I also like A.

Karolina Belomestnova

I love the position of Alice's body in D. A and B look as if she's floating, C looks like she's been knocked unconscious, and D looks like she's actually being pulled downward (not exactly by choice).

D with a hint flutterbies

A and C

B. Nice subtle nod to the fire and the sense of losing one's self in the smoke

i like to body of A but D is a win for me!

Toss up between A and C, leaning toward C. B is meh.. D is too on the nose. I think the birds going up towards the light is a nice touch, but nothing is quite as suffocating (literally) as the watery depths where light doesn't penetrate, but where monsters do very much thrive.

Dewi Sri

Am I the only one who still thinks the monster looks like a little like a distorted vagina? It's not as bad as the original sketch but I still cant under it upon initial glance. Maybe when it's colored in it won't though. As far as drifting alice I like D cause it's fits into the darkness but maybe put A with it. Like alice drifts initially as darkness cause real world is disappearing off of her and as we come into wonderland it turns into butterflies

Mixture of A and D: Butterflies (or what those little things are) with the smoke in background If to choose 1: A

A and also C are my favourites.

A

Kieran

The body position of A is the best but for atmosphere D or B are perfect

A for the butterflies. D fire the smoke.

Davinellulinvega

B, it feels like she’s drifting (as if into a fog of depression) rather than falling.

A

D

Stephanie Groth

A

D

I like the bright light in A, it feels like leaving the bliss of childhood ignorance, and the relaxed pose of B is that "giving up" feeling, which I think many people who struggle with depression may relate to (it's a constant battle to fight the urge, and sometimes it's easier to just drift for a while). I feel like, in my own experience, descending into total madness is going deeper into that sense of giving up, so the tentacles represent that darkness waiting for you to fall just deep enough to take hold. Perhaps making their outlines lighter where the shadows don't reach, and more prominent in the darker depths, could give an impression of anticipation on the darkness's part.

Difyance

I love the pose and the butterflies for A

Pytress Lowrey

i like A the best it looks whimsical like she fell through a hole in a garden. B looks like she was in a fire, C maybe fell down a well and drown, D would be my 2nd choice like a mystic demon gate opened pulled her in

KuroTatsu

I like D the most, but B is great too, I like the falling pose of A

St. Thomas

i like the fall of C and feel it could work with any of the elements

It’s good to hear that you are receiving our feedback from the last post!

Nicholas Brokaw

I’m a fan of B because the wispy smoke/mist makes me think of Shadow Alice strengthening her grasp on Child Alice as she falls deeper.

Nicholas Brokaw

I like B. It has that aurora about it. Most smoke effect is great

D

D for sure. Can’t go wrong with tentacles. Also digging the boss head design so far

D.

Death of Ink

C

Lady Charon

D all day.

Sarah Heist

I like B, it's like you're fading away as you're falling.

I like D, and not just because of the tentacles! i like the contrast of the bright and dark plus it has the wispy bits i really liked from B.

Anna Lepper

I have to go with either A or C i love the tentacles and shadows in C but I love the butterflys and the bright light at the top from A. These all fantastic! I cant wait to see the final colored image of the Judgement boss fight

I definitely like D the best and I enjoy the idea of butterflies as maybe the loss of innocence in a way? Or perhaps something else representing that

the boss's "face" is muuuuch better here. the teeth and the outline better indicate what it is and what it isn't D for sure...though you might toss in a couple butterflies as that also fits themes we've seen

D, B, C, A

D and A are close tie

D seems like the best option. She being thrown from the smoke of the fire into Wonderland, while it also seems she just barely misses being grabbed by the Queen's tentacles.

I prefer B. My partner prefers A and C (on par with each other), with B being a very very close 3rd

Martin Towell

I like C or D

Personally I like D best.
