Boss Monster Bumby

Dear Insane Children,

Presented here today is the final image in the series of 4 illustrated by Adam Narozanski for the scenes where Alice encounters memories of Dr. Angus Bumby. Adam says of this one:

And the last Bumby of four, I made this one more dynamic. I imagined it could be the moment where the Bumby memory looses it's power over Alice and the Dollmaker feels threatened, trying to claw his way out of a dark void which he is about to fall into? Just some loose ideas that were going through my head as I was working on it, all four of these were really fun to make.

And I think that sounds great. The idea would be that we see three variations on Bumby in previous areas of this particular "memory structure." In those scenes, Child Alice won't fight Bumby - though she will likely solve some puzzles and perhaps fight off some sort of guard creatures. But in the final room... the one pictured here (main image - above) - there could be a proper Bumby Boss Fight

Based on all the comments I've seen from everyone ... LOTS of you would like another chance to give Bumby/The Dollmaker some well-deserved beatings. And I especially like the idea of Child Alice being given the chance to confront and destroy a representation of the evil that destroyed her family. Some serious cathartic action in there!

In case any of you missed the previous illustrations in this series...

Here's a fun question for you: What would you title these four images?

I'm thinking... The Terrorpist, The Hypnotist, The Puppet Master, and The Blackened Mean.

Can you Crowd Design a better set of names for these?

And I'm thinking... it feels like these should be presented as a Print Set... something I had discussed with Font Lord in the past. Perhaps something we offer over at Mysterious. Where an order contains 1 of each of these images (4 total). Probably packed in dual tubes. Thoughts on that?

Let us know your feedback and ideas in the Comments below!

It's kinda of a weird prequel/sequel combo if I understand correctly. I definitely agree that he shouldn't be quite as deformed as his appearance in Madness Returns, but I think it would work really well if he got at least close to it in his final form

I feel if this like a prequel to Madness we shouldn't have Bumby look too corrupted, if shes unaware of how evil he is but shows doubts of his good nature, it may work more naturally. The Blackened Mean I feel portrays this best, the office is creepy and full of dolls but Bumby himself isn't too altered but can leave you unsettled.

I am thinking similar to what @Jahnavi said, but perhaps inverted. What if the appearance was a bit fuzzy/blurry and consistently becomes clearer and more crisp as Alice progresses? Essentially, as they get closer to the root of the memory the visuals become clearer. I have been trying to figure out if I should include Bumby in my Alice sleeve. I expect ultimately I may not due to lack of room but man does Bumby evoke thoughts. Separately, and I do not know why, but the Bumby images make me think of the voice of Michael Wincott in The Crow.

Maybe The Hunter, The Trapper and I like The Puppet Master and The Blackened Mean.

I love the idea of an archive of haunted memories!

Art looks marvelous, although as in a previous comment, some look too familiar. Would love it as art prints regardless. Haven't any ideas about titles except with 'Discussion for a doll-up' for picture 3

The art looks amazing!

i can see the boss fight with Bumby having multiple stages. When Alice defeats one of his forms he mutates into the next one starting with the terropist then the hypnotist and so on.

Along with the drawers in the chest, it would be much more unsettling if the change was really obvious each time, so you don't know what to expect the next time

I think it might be more interesting if the physical appearance devolves further over the four encounters. I can see the general idea of him becoming more monstrous, but I feel like the second and the third images just look so similar to the last one that it deflates the suspense a little bit. I like how poised Bumby looks in the first one, but I think the black dripping eyes and the sharpened teeth just come out way too early

Would the set be of full-sized prints? Because honestly I can imagine these as offered as a smaller set (possibly postcards) - handy for those of us with limited wall space!

Really nice work, I’m in love with the mood of all of them. As for what you were thinking about during its creation (cool), if he was supposed eventually fall away it may be thematic to have the world/floor morph downwards (like a tunnel or a slide) and have the hand on the rafters look like he is trying to hold himself up. Alice could also have a stance of power/defiance (suggesting “You have no power over me anymore”) and the ground would be level for her. If people tend to buy multiple prints from you at once I can see the benefit. To incentivize a bundled purchase there is usually a benefit ie. buy 4 for less than buying them individually, nicer packaging or receiving something small (pin/sticker). Name suggestions: 1- Forget Me Not/Lest We Forget, 2- (I like yours and Puppeteer) The Act/ Playing with you/Setting the Stage/Let's Play, 3 - The Id/The Good Doctor/No Strings Attached, 4 - The Chamber of Horrors/Curiousities or The PsychoAnalyst.

they are very cool images, but not anything I want for my walls. That said, offering them as a set for those that want them sounds like a good idea

I think the obvious choice is the puppeteer but there is something menacing about the folded hands image.

You could also make references to Bumby when Alice makes her way inside the moon early in the game because “The man in the moon is the engineer.”

The Puppeteer. So many villains call themselves the Puppet Master, and the Puppeteer sort of sounds like Engineer which references the poem Bumby brainwashed into the heads of children.
