Alice Model Update

Dear Insane Children,

Last night, Roman sent over an updated Alice model. And this morning, I've uploaded a video of it to YouTube. Yay! Click on THIS LINK to head over and check out the latest turn-around of the 3D model.

One thing I feel a little uncertain about... whether or not Roman's made any changes to the facial structure. I loaded up New and Old in Photoshop and did an A/B flip back and forth... and maybe(?) the chin's been adjusted a fraction? My brain tells me "no" ... but the hair has certainly changed and that's made a huge difference in the way the face looks.

Since it's only 8AM here in Shanghai and Roman isn't yet replying to my messages... I'll just post this as-is and we'll get more details from him later.

So... the main thing here is hair, dress, and effects. And let's assume there are some more changes on the way.

As usual.. Crowd Design Time! Let us hear your feedback and thoughts in the comments below.

Alice Model Update

Comments

I'm gonna be honest I saw the Instagram one before this one, and I really like that one better. Her big eyes make her look a lot younger and more innocent like her world hasn't been shattered yet. Something about this version makes her look a lot older but I can't pin point what it is. 🤔

I like the real world and V2 version. I think I’d like her hair to be a little longer though.

in to the string world of Alice liddle beautiful model

I love her so so much. I honestly really love the eyes. I don’t know about the bangs though, I prefer the middle part ❤️

I really like the way her dress looks, loving the embers and everything. It's the eyes that I'm not really jiving with though. They just sort of throw the design off and take attention away from the rest of Alice. I like what @WitchDoll has come up with as it looks more balanced.

Hannah Kimberley Claire Davis

I think I would prefer the original look

LittleInkSheep

I definitely have a lot of grievances with the model, most of which has already been noted down in the comments. I think we can all unifyingly agree this doesn't look like a young Alice. Someone posted an edit of the model and that looks to me, more like the goal.

Talking about hair unlockable hairstyles would be cool

I think my comment was deleted because I can't see it, I hope I didn't do anything wrong by posting this edit of mine. This is my take on Roman's 3D model (I changed things using Photoshop) , this is how I see a younger Alice. I hope she is to your liking. Thank you Roman for your awesome 3D work. What I changed: - gave her more soft, child/pre-teen features to her face, like more round cheeks. - made her eyes a bit smaller - made her hair darker and gave it some volume next to the cheeks area. - took the hair "roots area" on the top of her head and put the sides closer to each other. - also made the hair a bit messy, seems to me like something that fits her in this younger age. - made her skin more pale - changed the tip of her nose, I gave it a small lift. if you like my version I can make the profile one as well <img src="https://i.ibb.co/ZJ96LVt/before-after.jpg"> and a "real life" version next to the "Wonderland" version Version 2 Wonderlands Alice: - tried to make her cheeks less chubby -gave her some subtle blush - lowered the volume of her hair around her shoulder. <img src="https://i.ibb.co/Ks2cjkD/Sick-healthy.jpg">

I feel like her model could do with a less is more approach. There seems to be so much going on around her eyes, that the attention is immediately drawn to them with a sunken look that just looks unsettling. Alice has always struck me as having beautiful eyes, and her face could do with being more rounded like this picture on the wiki: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/americanmcgeesalice/images/5/5a/Alice_chained_close.png/revision/latest?cb=20171026122043

Jaded Entity

Personally I don’t like the hairstyle change. Not sure why that change was made.

I would suggest making her eyes less sunken in and just a little smaller, there's endearing big eyes and then there's just creepy. The deep crevasses of her inner eyes really age her way too much unfortunately. I'd also turn up the tip of her nose a little, the slightly hooked nose doesn't suit her very much. I think I remember it being said somewhere that the way Alice sees herself in wonderland is her ideal self, that's why she had neat, shiny hair, a little make up, etc, here she looks more like her London self. I know she's gone through trauma, but she was still processing it in Madness Returns and she still managed to look healthy in wonderland. At the end of the day the main part is that she just needs to look younger, almond shaped eyes, eyelashes, rounder cheeks etc. Her outfit and the flame effects are amazing though, I seriously can't wait to see her in all her other outfits!

I think it looks pretty good for a second Alice Model. Additionally I think the eyes are like it on purpose, when she get's in the Circus and can't sleep (like it was said in a part of one of the scripts). But they are reale fare away from each other 🙈 I like her dress too and her hair color is great. Great work and thanks for sharing it with the community. 😊

I think her eyes are a bit too big and they are too far from each other.

Danny Castle

I like the dress a lot. As for Alice, I preferred her without the bangs and with a middle parting. Also I liked her hair a darker, richer brown. The eyes are a little too big and also the tip of her nose is going down too much. I think it would look better moved up a little bit. Amazing work though as usual!

I was thinking the same of Juan above, the first thing that I thought was: she seems a fish... the eyes are too much marked maybe is not the bigness the problem but more that is very incaved, the lines around are too much marked in that sense. And the nose is a little eagle shape, she is a little witch. The hair aren’ t bad :) I like the body lightness. Good work anyway keep going! XD

I'm not a fan of the huge insect-like eyes, but I know those are going to stay, so... I think the nose points down too much, its a bit like Mr.Burns nose. The eyes would look better if they were more almond shape, and the face should be rounder in general. That's just what i'd find pleasing of course, I'm not comparing with the 2D design.

Juan Romero

The face looks the same aside from the eyes to me.

Stephanie Groth

It may be just me but the arms feel a bit "off" to me.

I really like her, but maybe the dark line under her eye should be lighter

Wiki

Alice is looking great. I echo the thoughts others mentioned about hair colour and her chin but thats pretty minor.

Helloween4545

She looks amazing, but her hair is definitely too light, she almost looks blond on the samples which seems... wrong...

Looks great! All ill say is I thought her hair was black and I think if the bangs were fuller might look better

Lovely improvement and a great deal closer to the artwork, I’m thinking that’s why it looks a bit more pointed and less long regarding the chin. Love the hair being closer to the original game American McGee’s Alice which chronologically makes sense :). Looking better and better.

I think the eyes make her look much older than she is with these new changes. From the side angles it looks fine but straight on she looks much much older. Perhaps bring them out a bit to fill in the deep eye corners and maybe that'll fix her look

I feel like her face needs to be more round to show her more child likeness. That is what we are going for isn't it? Her younger self? That's usually rounder faces and bigger eyes.

The dress looks beautiful! I love the fire-damaged detailing. But she looks very tired and sickly, which adds a lot to her age appearance-wise. Understandable as she has gone through considerable trauma, however I do think it could be toned back to make her more childlike. Perhaps her facial appearance changes slightly as the game progresses; showing the toll that her journey has had on her. Also, when looking front-on, her chin also looks way too sharp and pointy. I think it needs to be softened a bit.

I love the dress! The chin does seem a bit pointy and not a fan of the bangs short like that. I LOVED her hair in Madness returns. Think that should stay but like I said love the idea of the dress looking like embers inside them!

Peaches

From what I (think I) see, other than the hair and eyebrows being lighter, the eyes aren’t as deep set, the lips are lighter, and around the eyes are less dark as compared to the prior version. Definitely more childlike but I really dislike the bangs. I think lightening around the eyes a smidge more, especially the lower eyelashes (currently they’re so dark they give the impression of eyeliner) and giving her slightly fuller cheeks will de-age her while still keeping the haunted look. Maybe even a little more rosiness to the cheeks as well. Getting there!

I immediately read embers and burning on the dress! As some have said, the pinafore in the back seems wrong, and the sunken eyes near her nose along with her black eyeliner feel too deep and clash with each other. As for the bangs, maybe check out photos of Alice Liddell and her sisters as reference for short Victorian bangs? Her skinny arms and physique, and her wide open eyes give me the impression of a teen. Can't wait to see how it comes along!

My main concern is the eyes. The way the inner corners were done has her eyes looking a bit larger and more sunken in- giving her a more alien look. The only thing with the hair is that it's a bit short, the brown is less saturated or overly highlighted so that it looks less...brown...and with those bangs, the hair would not naturally fall like that.

Sarah Heist

The hair is still a little off. Her bangs are too fluffy and shaggy, they need to be sleek and let her forehead have some more room. Her dress is fine, but the back of the apron is wrong, there's a pinafore and Hollow Yves the skull is missing. I might be the only person in the world who didn't like her hair in Madness Returns. I thought the long flowing blackness of it really took away from the reddish brunette she was in the first game and made her look more...goth in a Hot Topic way? I dunno, but I love this Alice more, even with the flaws.

I Love the dress and effects. Stunning! However, I really don’t like the “m”-shaped middlepart and the lower eyelid sunken/liner feels like too much. I don’t know if it can be more subtle or if it would benefit to just get rid of it even though I understand the effect. Just a lot of things making her look a bit old and ragged and little to imply youth. I think I like the eye size depending on what happens with the other details.

Lauren Tina

Have some thoughts on the eyes, but you said things may change and talk about hair, dress, and effects. I like the hair though I'm use to seeing it black from AMR, but in Alice is was brown so would just take getting use to again I guess. Some small changes to the bangs could be a bit of an improvement something just feels a little off there. I like the dress a lot. The flame effect really catches the eyes. Would be neat to see some more cinders that rise off of it just for added effect, but that could also end up being overkill. Hard to say. Overall it looks like it is coming along very nicely.

It was just brought to my attention. There’s not supposed to be a pinafore on the back of the dress and Hollow Yves is missing.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

I also agree with the comments about the hair. I love bangs, but I am not a fan of middle parts. Take a look at my avatar for an example of bangs done right.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

I think you should rethink the part and bangs. The center feather isn’t working for me.

Things I would say need work: the bangs are throwing me off, I feel like her hair should be darker, the nose should be reshaped at the bottom, and the eyes should be less big? Just my opinion, though! I'm still just not getting 13-year-old vibes. But her dress is 👌 *chefs kiss*

I still think the face is too long, and why does she have jowls? I think that’s going a long way to make her look 30 as some are saying.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Dress details are phenomenal tho 👌🔥🔥🔥

Maybe if the eye bags were less swollen? And the dark coloring was extended a little more in the eye socket instead of only on the lids

I also cant notice any changes to the face, she certainly does not look 13, she looks more like a 30 year old woman who has made questionable decisions in life. I like the dress, though the fire animation everywhere makes it seem more like glitter than cinders. I do hate being a negative Nancy so as a good note I am very happy to see the progress on this, it takes this project to a whole new level to see modeling and animation, I'm very excited. 🤩

This doesn't even look like Alice to me. If this was posted somewhere without context, I'd have no clue. Her nose is waaaaaay bigger than the previous game and makes her face look really disproportionate imo. It could be because her face is slim so it just looks like it takes up a lot of space? The hair color moving from black to brown feels really weird too. That was my favorite piece of Alice in Madness Returns because it gave her the goth vibe. That's gone with changing the hair color to brown

The eyes are huge. I feel they break the line between supernatural and her age range big eye style. I am familiar with Alice.

Love the bangs. Defs there is something diferent on the chin.

I'm not a fan of the way her head is looking, the bangs/ top of her head are really throwing me off. The very top of the center hair part has like heart humps (for lack of a better wording at the moment)? And the darkness under her eyes is too defined against having nothing on the waterline of her eyes. Almost looks like bad makeup versus insomnia.

Christine Phillips

I really dislike how big her eyes are. They just look creepy.

I can't remember the way she was designed before but she does look like a 13 year old who doesn't eat regularly. Her cheeks are very thin with the pointed chin accentuating this.

I'm not sure why, but I'm really put off by the bangs. Maybe it's the middle part? 🤔

Destiny Jenson

The slight shifts make her seem younger and actually a little bit more like Lizzie/The Red Queen I think? I really like the differences as a way of showing the difference in her age and experience 💜

Yeah the dress is amazing, but I don’t feel like the face was adjusted much. More work is needed to be done there.
