Chamber of Anger pt. 2

Dear Insane Children,

Omri sent over an updated version of Alice's confrontation with Inferno Alice in the Chamber of Anger. And I just had to post it because... well, it's amazing.

Of this update Omri says:

i thought that the child is a prisoner- literally a victim so why not make it so she's trapping herself in a sense. also i thought to merge the tentacles with the chains so it's ONE mesh. it's not exactly chains and not exactly tentacles but both and amorphic.
If you guys want me to render it more- no probs. OR if i still somehow got it wrong but according to the story this ought to work well.
i DO imagine that the ceiling will be closed in the Battle itself. like get in the room- the ceiling closes and when "freeing" the child from her chains it opens again and beams you up or a platform raises there whatever.

To which I replied:

This is AMAZING @Omri
Please do go ahead and render a final version.
I *love* the idea of chains as tentacles. Tentachains? Chaintcles?
And, yes, Anger traps us. Great visual metaphor.

And, Insane Children, I want to say again: THANK YOU

The sort of visual / narrative development we're doing here on Patreon would be impossible under "normal" game development conditions. That we're able to spend so much time working through these details and coming up with ideas... means that the final product will be rich beyond belief.

YOU are directly supporting the team of artists making all of this possible. And I hope you know that you're bringing to life something truly unique.

From Shanghai with Chaintcles,

This is amazing 🤩

Chainticles is a great word and the concept is badass! I love the stained glass looking window at the top instead of a door too. I can't wait for the next live stream!!!

Thanks for the note. I watched a bit and it's fun to see her having so much fun :) Hmm, yeah, that's too bad she's got the date stuff wrong. There seem to be some people who are making an issue out of the fact that "2021" is written on a wiki or blog somewhere... And, so, that must be the date even if I say now that it's not. Go figure?

Okay. I hear you. I just feel like it’s overkill to have an Adult Alice, Shadow Alice, Child Alice, and slightly younger Child Alice/Fire Alice. If we weren’t already playing as a representation of a young Alice, it wouldn’t bother me as much. Child Alice is supposed to be 13 (even though you said she doesn’t really have a definitive age) and Fire Alice is 11. They’re only separated by 2 years. That’s two Child Alice’s in the mind of an Adult Alice. You’ve said you don’t think we could have too many Alice’s, but where do we draw the line?Do we have a Sad Alice, a Greedy Alice, a Fear Alice? We could do that. If you wanted. I understand that every character in Wonderland represents an aspect of Alice’s psyche, but I personally prefer the subtlety and sophistication of alluding to characters like the Cheshire Cat representing her id, or Mad Hatter representing her curiosity, rather than multiple avatars of her emotions being a mirror image. Fire Alice is a fine addition, I’m suggesting it could be streamlined, or given more importance.

She factors into the rest of the story because she's the young incarnation of the main character. And a representative of a critical emotion the main character is required to deal with. It's not like she's a "Mech Bread Toaster on Spider Legs" invented in a vacuum just to provide a boss monster experience. She's literally a reflection of the main character and her core struggle. I thought we already dealt with this? It's a big frustrating to keep coming back to it... Shadow Alice, Fire Alice, Young Alice, Adult Alice... and ALL of the characters in Wonderland are representations of... ALICE. The entire point of these games to create a world and collection of characters who represent various aspects of the main character's journey and core struggle.

love the chaintacles Great image

Okay. I can agree to that up to a point. I also personally believe things can be too vague for the sake of being vague, like JJ Abrams’ insufferable mystery box. I agree stories should leave elements to the imagination, but there does come a certain point when there’s so many unexplained things it just comes off as arbitrary. Not saying Fire Alice applies. My main concern is that since we already have a metastasization of Alice’s negative emotions in Shadow Alice, why is there another one running around? It just makes more sense to me that they are related. This sequence was the only one I wasn’t completely enamored with when reading the narrative. It feels weird that a character like this appears. You fight her. And then she doesn’t factor in to the rest of the story in anyway. I’d at least like to see Fire Alice factor in someway to subsequent events. If she’s not Shadow Alice, maybe she can cooperate with her.

I just found out that Gab Smoulders has started playing AMR! It's been refreshing to watch her play through the combat with less difficultly than American. :P Also, she talks about how highly requested the game was for years and that she saw tons of cosplay and fan art from the series which peaked her interest. She was just blown away by the first 1-2 hours of gameplay, saying how it holds its own versus console-launching PS5 games in terms of art direction and aesthetics! And someone told her about Asylum (though I think they must not be very current because they said it was coming out in 2021). I know this has like nothing to do with this particular Patreon post, but I just wanted to share. :)

She is what she is. 11-year-old Alice. A representation of anger and rage. Try to remember that not everything gets explained 100%. These games are like dreams. When people ask me years after the release of AMA or AMR "What did XYZ mean?" One of my favorite answers is "whatever you want it to mean" Because that gives the story and the product life beyond the work we're doing today. It keeps people talking, guessing, and playing. Not all questions can or should be answered. <-- That is actually one of the important things you have to learn in dealing with PTSD. And it's not just an aside. Life is ambiguous. And Chaos doesn't always have clearly defined edges.

So what are we thinking, at this point, Fire Alice is? Why is she there? What does she represent? I can’t help but be hung on these questions whenever we talk about her. I like the sequence. It makes for cool visuals. But I’d like to know why she exists and what’s her purpose in the plot beyond how she moves it forward. You know my thoughts on this. She’s a facade, a masquerade. A form of Shadow Alice. She’s may look like she’s chained up, but she’s actually in control. Her helplessness is a lure. What do you think? Otherwise, what else could she be?
