The Tale of Scruffy Bumps

Dear Insane Children,

For those of you who missed it, there's a Scruffy Bumps Theme Song posted over on my YouTube Channel. And it's awesome.

Scruffy Bumps is a murderous revenge cat possessed by an evil Egyptian death goddess who kills those who abuse animals. Rawr.

Everyone I explain this idea to says, "Wow, yeah!" Because everyone wants to get revenge on people who treat animals badly.

No telling how far this concept will go... but we're working on a plush toy, film/tv concept, and more...

Including an animation to accompany the theme song.

Presented here are a couple of frames from the storyboard for that animation. There's a link below to a PDF containing the full storyboard.

This project is being put together by Tom Resnick and his brother Ben. Seems the creative force is strong in that family!

Let us know in the comments below what you think of the concept for this animation. And also share any thoughts or ideas you might have in relation to Scruffy Bumps!

The Tale of Scruffy Bumps

Comments

Bit of a body below, so take some time aside, if you please: Firstly, I think the basic concept is very solid. From what I gather, this is a series of vignettes which promise some cathartic comeuppance as a denouement. Great premise with a lot of possible episodic ideas to offer. Seeing animal abusers get their just desserts is certainly a winsome and entertaining climax. The questions I have go beyond that visceral satisfaction. I’ve been thinking a lot lately on the relationship between humans and animals, particularly in the domestic setting. There have been a lot of ways in which animals have played a role in human affairs. They’ve not only been recipients of love and affection, but agricultural field hands, aids to the mentally or physically disabled, and even soldiers in wartime conflicts. It makes me wonder: What exactly does Scruffy Bumps consider to be an act of abuse to animals? There are clearly the obvious examples, which I’m sure will come into play. My interest lies in the not-so-obvious. When I was in high school, I watched the 2004 film Something the Lord Made, which was a dramatization of the first successful open-heart surgery. Over the course of the film, the physicians have to deliberately give dogs they acquired from a local pound a particular heart defect in order to have test subjects on which to perform their experimental procedures, meant to find a cure to Blue Baby Syndrome. What would Scruffy Bumps think on such a matter? Would he consider this an act of abuse? Would the clear aim to find a cure for cardiac defects in infants make him think twice about the situation, or would he be unwavering in his convictions, giving no quarter to nuance, intent, or compromise? I think of Rorschach from Alan Moore’s Watchmen as an example of the latter. I’m not taking a position one way or the other. I’d just like to know of Scruffy Bumps’ position. What of euthanasia? I remember watching the last living rescue dog involved in the 9/11 attacks being put down to end his suffering from old age. He was given a proper veteran’s send-off with Marines saluting and everything. Would Scruffy Bumps consider that acceptable? If not, how would he punish the offenders? And what of animals not typically thought of as “pets”, but still domesticated? Horses, for example, have been involved in everything from agriculture to transportation to warfare for thousands of years. Since Scruffy Bumps is possessed by an ancient Egyptian death god, he came from a place and time where horses were used for all those purposes, so his position on how horses are or were treated isn’t necessarily so clear, if they’re to be brought up at all. The allusions to veganism are a little too obvious, so I won’t touch upon them here. But I would like to call into consideration animals that aren’t necessarily “abused”, but are still dealt a raw deal. I think, for example, of a dog perhaps adopted by a child orphaned during the Bubonic Plague, only to lose his owner to disease, injury, or violence. Is Scruffy Bumps only a spirit of vengeance, or does he offer any comfort to such downtrodden creatures? If he can only do violence, does he have any internal misgivings about that? Is there another animal spirit that emerges to do the acts of kindness that Scruffy cannot? Just a few thoughts that came to mind. I'd love to see how this turns out

Definitely feel like I identify with Scruffy Bumps for sure. I get very passionate about this subject. And cats are the best!!

I love it and want a Scruffy Bumps now!

I love this concept. I think more people should teach their children not to abuse animals. Most are taught that just because they are an animal that they don't understand or feel things the way we do. Animals understand maybe even more than we know. I love where this is going. Keep up the great good work.

The voice perfect for the song, can't wait to see more to come for Scruffy Bumps.

Oh, thank you! It's a really cool story and an awesome song. Now I often sing this song for my cat.))

Yas! THIS. I actually made up a super hero for this very same problem, so it's nice to see someone else is doing the same. ❤
