Goblin Slayer's weapons and armor ANALYSED

TLDR: combination of small weapon + torch (with small shield against spears or rocks) is the way to go solo. Long: First - I love the video. A lot of what you said is absolutely correct. I would like to point out and defend few of the decision with armor and weaponry the Goblin Slayer did and was IMHO right. These are coming from my personal experience as LARP player who was part of some “real” cave adventure and fights with soft weapons. I used padded armor, steel breastplate, steel hat, plate gauntlets and thick leather legguards and bracers. As a weapon I was using spear and short sword. Most of the real caves have tight places you need to squeez through. There are big domes and corridors, but to get there you usually need to crawl through tight places. It is NOT your neat DnD square / hex place you are going through. Going with breastplate was the biggest mistake. I have the conquistador breastplate (only the front part) and it sux when you need to squeez in tight places. Mobility of torso is not an issue in fight above, but down in the cave it is a big problem. I real scenario I would rather use chainmail with the flex plate pieces on the front as GS is using and sacrifice some of the protection from heavy blows. There was nobody with full visor, so I could not confirm / deny my suspicion that this is going to be a bigger issue then in the world of above. (Lack of light + shadows) Shield is a general pain in the ass. Our group had some shield guys and you can drag slightly bigger variation then GS is using. Vikings and kite shields were left behind. Weapons – as you can expect spear was left behind too. It is just too long to drag around some corners without breaking it in half. At the start, before I was forced to left it behind, spear performed magnificently. Tight corridors, low mobility targets… Two handed swords were pain in the ass but we get them through. In real group fight they performed great, but they need support from other guys with shorter weapons, not to be rushed. I would not go with greatsword SOLO against opponent rushing in numbers and going for close combat (as GS is doing). You also get really really screwed when you need to rush long ranged opponent in tight space (crossbows / shortbow / thrown spears). Stabbing is not always an option. You can switch the half-grip, but the problem is sometimes there is no room for even that. Also getting out your other weapon (be it dagger or short sword) is not as easy and quick in tight place. Sometimes you are clinched, on the ground, crawling or you got ambushed from behind. Using you opponent weapon is nearly impossible because of the uneven floor and shadows. You can clinch it out if you know what you are doing, but using your own weapon is WAY easier. This is like the ONLY issue I have with GS.

shadiversity, i had a question since your video on what weapons halfling would use, why not poison ? A litlle cut can be a letal blow, and you could go in, target less protected area that you can easyly cut but would not do a letal blow, retreat, and let the ennemy die. For that matter why poison was not more used in the batlle field ? Sounds like practical. I imagine snake-people could spit their poison on their weapons, and as such don't need to buy it.
