The knock at the door startled you from your revery. You weren’t expecting anyone. You waited, hoping that they’d acknowledge that no one was home. You felt something slip through the mail slot at the foot of your door. You waited a little while longer, then picked it up.

It looked like a phone. Not one you’d seen before. You held it up, looking at your reflection in its mirror shine. A flash of purple washed across its screen. Fast. You weren’t even sure you had seen it. As you waited, you were almost certain that it had been imagined.

Then came another flash. And another. It was getting… Hard to think. Easier to stare at the phone, at the flashes. It felt good to watch the screen. The flashes were appearing more rapidly. Stripping away more and more thoughts. Until your mind went blank.

A week later, you were curled up on the sofa, watching tv. A knock came at your door. This time, you were expecting it. Obedient, and oh so ready, you walked to the front door. As you opened it, you felt your mind shutting down again. You didn’t need to remember past this point.
