whenever i do these i try to find references, i'll break them down, hide the layer from beneath and change things around as I see fit. That's because often times the drawing i'll reference is a finished picture with a lot of rendering that can hide some structural errors, especially if it's AI. So breaking it down to a 1:1 structure sketch isn't good. You need to understand the flow of shapes and how to give your sketch better volume and readability by moving the lines where they feel nice to the eye.

I recommend you learn from reference, but don't forget to sketch from memory too, this is something i need to do more too because it can easily become a crutch as breaking things down will always ( not always but most time ) be a lot easier than drawing from the top of your gnogin. So keep your pencils to the paper soldiers.
