2011 Interview with Chad Daybell

We've referenced this interview quite a bit in our podcast episodes. It's a 20-minute interview with Chad Daybell  in 2011.

Lauren found this video back in December, 2019. She decided to download the video in case it was removed from the web. We didn't know then we'd be doing a podcast, it was just her journalistic instincts kicking in.

The video was taken down at some point, and while we assume it is in the possession of other people, we haven't been able to find it anywhere else online. We wanted our Patreon supporters to hear it and ask: What stands out to you? What do you notice about this interview? We would love to hear your thoughts.

This is Chad 9 years ago, before he published any of Julie Rowe's books.

This is crazy for me to go back and listen to. I live in this area. I remember many years ago when so many friends and neighbors were caught up in this author and his visions of the last days. I was invited by several people to go to his seminars. I never did attend, but I have friends who did. I have tried for 3 years to wrap my brain around these things that led to this tragic path. I just can’t fathom

I read the forward today in the book that Freeman wrote. I think he started to form his ideas of near death experiences and past lives from her ideas.

It interests me what Chad wants to make sure he gets to say. His vocal inflection talking about Suzanne Freeman sounded earnest like he was attached to her, his mention of Lani Daybell like he wanted to impress more successful Daybells, and a millionaire neighbour so we know he rubs shoulders with wealthier people who aren’t as spiritually prepared as he is, and the idea that Spring Creek Books was a downsized concern rather than just Tammy with Chad, and some vocal help from Seth and Emma for audiobooks,

Hi John and Lauren, wishing you a happy new year and all the best for 2021. We haven't from you for 2 months - just wondering how you are and if everything is OK 😊

Thanks Ann for these insightful observations. Chad appears to have publicly discussed his NDE's around 2014 to 2015, which was around the same time he was becoming invested in publishing Julie Rowe's books. Based upon Chad's clear neglect in discussing his NDE's prior to 2015, I have to agree with you that he appears to have transformed some of his "scary moments" into NDE's after the fact. What is most interesting to us- and a continuing enigma for this case- is whether he actually believes in his NDE's or realizes, at some deeper level, that he is merely espousing fiction. Initially, he claimed that his writing was fiction, but then he later changed course, arguing that he simply grabbed his material from beyond the veil. Memories are often imperfect, reconstructed and closely aligned with strong beliefs- so it seems plausible that as Chad's beliefs became more extreme he transformed his initial traumatic experiences into what he perceived to be true beliefs about his NDE's (sometimes called the sleeper effect). Killing children- or, at least, being complicit in killing children- would seem to indicate that he held his beliefs about the apocalypse and his NDE's to be an accurate reflection of reality at some level. It is hard to imagine taking such extreme measures without some valid beliefs to support such horrendous actions. This portion of the case has been one of the most perplexing for us. Thank you for this comment. John

Thank you for this. It was interesting to me that Chad spoke of the other author's near death experience, but didn't mention his own. When did he start claiming to have had those? He also described all of his books as fiction. I was interested in his manner of speech. He reminded me of the way people spoke in the 1950s on radio and television. Just something very old-fashioned about the way he spoke. He was soft-spoken, didn't use words like "um" or "like." I'm an author. The way he praised his own books is normal for an author, he was on that show to sell books and he came across as very earnest and humble to me. I didn't realize that Tammy had co-authored some of the books. I think the most interesting thing is that he mentioned that the other author was able to see "beyond the veil" but didn't say that he could as well. His two slightly scary moments when he was knocked over by waves, which he calls his NDEs happened before this interview, but he doesn't mention them. Obviously, he saw the reception to the other author's book and turned these incidents into NDEs.
