Dr John Matthias Discusses Josh Duggar

Trigger Warning: Sex Abuse.

A week after announcing he and his wife Anna were expecting their seventh child, Josh Duggar from TLC's '19 Kids and Counting' was arrested and charged with receiving and possessing child pornography (NOTE: He was NOT charged with distributing, like Lauren speculates in this unedited Patreon podcast episode).

We almost didn't post this episode since John and I decided to record this dinner table conversation on a whim, and the next day, at Josh's bond hearing, new information changed some of our initial opinion.  But [drum roll] we decided to record a part 2, to explain some of our evolving thoughts, and to go ahead and post this raw unedited convo with Hidden True Crime.

Let us know any thoughts/questions you might have. Is this a case you'd like to see us continue to follow and discuss? (Don't worry, we're still covering the Daybell's first and foremost!)

They wanted to interview the kids but Anna refused.

Josh didn’t confess, from what I understand, his family came up with that narrative. I could be wrong but after recently watching several different documentaries I think it was one of the daughters that said something and then he confessed. I could be wrong though.

Would you do something about Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle. Jim Bob is a liar and pretends to be Godly. Hes a very self deceived person.

Dr.John, in all seriousness, I asked myself what would I have done if it had been my son? I know I was fortunate I could of sent my son to live with my mom but then what? I would of been scared to death to call the police and as them to lock up my son, I thought well I have medical insurance would I ask his pediatrician to recommend a counselor? Or do I call c.p.s ? I honestly would have no idea other than get him away from any other children. I know it seems crazy but as a parent that will never have this problem thank God because I have no idea what I'd do if it was my son please advise any parent that is faced with this because even though my child rearing days are long gone I'm sure someone somewhere isn't as lucky as I was.

I can't help but think this is a win for his kids.As he keeps impregnating his wife every eighteen months he knows he struggles with this but seems to not care his smugness in his mugshot makes me tend to think this sick puppy keeps having more babies to replenish his victims , as one ages out another one enters his preferred victim age. Is it possible he could safely be around all those children?

Purity culture and sexual repression in these religious groups does sooo much damage. Abuse & perverted proclivities run rampant. It's documented. When will these groups realize this kind of repression does more harm than good?? It's not rocket science!

Tara

I feel so sad for his victims, and it sounds like he was a victim as well.

Basically Josh's parents did him a real disservice by covering up his sexual contact with his 5 year old sister. They had enough power, they could probably have gotten him into an appropriate sexual intervention program confidentially. But they were too proud. They were too righteous. And now? They won't admit to any mistakes. They're far too perfect to make mistakes. Mind you, Josh is responsible for his activities as an adult. He had the responsibility to suppress inappropriate urges. He didn't do so. But his parents had a responsibility to the 14 - 18 year old son.

Could the family of the victim girl outside of the Duggar family bring charges against the law enforcement entity that chose not to bring charges?

Krista Steiger

I’m late to this podcast and I signed up and paid for this Patreon to hear this. Thank you for finally asking the hard question about his own kids possibly being abused. Why is no one else bringing this up?

Amber Gifford

I have been wanting to ask a question. I have heard in the past that a lot of child predators have once been victims of sexual abuse at one time. Is that a true assumption? If so, speculating of course, could that perhaps have been the case with Josh Duggar? What are the statistics of how a person becomes a predator like this? I just would like to know what triggers this in a person?

Stephanie Budge

thank you so much for this! I feel sorry for Josh Duggar’s sisters. I understand that the girls did not receive therapy and their feelings were never validated. Also, I understand Josh’s sister caught him abusing his 5 year old sister and gave him an ultimatum. Either tell the parents or she would. That seems to be validated as there is a tremendous fracture in the family with some of the girls no longer visiting their parents’ home or having contact with them.

I recommend a 60 Minutes Australia episode called Pervert Park which talks about pedophilia. That episode and several things I've read discuss the causes of pedophilia. It was an eye opener for me.

Thank you for taking the time to include us in your candid conversation. It gives me something fun to listen to On my way to work! It is definitely got wrenching to hear the updated information. We have to be so thankful for people like Dr. Matthias who is willing and able to serve this population. It takes a special kind of fortitude!

Totally agree Melissa- and equally disturbing that he will be allowed to visit his children (apparently) before any thorough assessment of risks (including a diagnosis) has been determined, which would provide the appropriate course of action.

Lauren and John Matthias

Great question. The debate around the causes and development of pedophilia is far from settled and still hotly contested. Dr. James Cantor has argued, based upon brain imaging studies, that the brains of pedophiles are wired for a sexual attraction to children- in other words, it's an innate sexual orientation from birth that remains invariant across the lifespan. Cantor, however, is usually referencing "exclusive" pedophiles, or those only attracted to children. Josh Dugger would be considered a "non-exclusive" pedophile with sexual attractions to adults (and likely children as well), which becomes much more complicated to discern and more likely to have an environmental and learning component to it based upon upbringing, sexual experiences and traumas, cultural taboos around sex, etc. When you add the violence component to Josh's sexual interests with children, the issue becomes even more difficult to decipher because sexual violence towards children is unlikely to be completely innate and, therefore, would require some learning from the environment (unless he fits the category of a sadistic child sex offender). As with most issues with human beings there is complexity here and likely some combination of nature and nurture involved, which implies that Josh may have some genetic predisposition towards pedophilia that was exacerbated through his childhood experiences and cultural influences. Thanks for the question- we simply didn't have time to get into so much detail in our chat. John

Very interesting 💜

Thank you for your insight! Such a treat to have a seat at your dinner table. Am I understanding correctly that a type of pedophelia that Josh was afflicted with was caused predominantly by his environment (i.e., lack of attention, sexual taboos, opportunity) as compared to others with pedophelia (primarily caused due to their innate biology. Or do all pedopheliacs (?) need an environment to start exhibiting? I guess my question is how does the old nature vs nurture paradigm related specifically to pedophelia. Thank you!!

I love these impromptu sessions, as well as the fact that you do cover other, current topics.
