Thoughts on Lori Daybell's mental health

John and I have been discussing recent developments about Lori's mental health in the Daybell case, and this is our most recent discussion.  Beyond the grand jury wrapping up, and everyone anxiously awaiting word of any charges, this has been some of the recent talk in the true crime community the past couple of days when it comes to Lori and Chad.

Dr. John also discusses what he would do in an evaluation, and what is typically done when assessing someone charged with a crime.

We also share a teaser for our upcoming episode.

Thoughts on Lori Daybell's mental health

This made me smile. Lauren we are a family of clinical social workers lol. Assessments all the time. Lol

My mother had pervasive auditory hallucinations and some olfactory hallucinations. Very interesting that Dr. John says those are rare. If you see this and have any more information to share I'd be interested.

I just joined the patroen and I don’t know if you see old comments but I really appreciated this episode! My brother has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and it’s been my experience that there is a palpable sense of chaos when I’m around my brother and he’s struggling with symptoms of psychosis. to me the biggest indicator that he’s not present is how disorganized his thinking becomes. It’s not necessarily the strength of his beliefs in a false reality, to me what sticks out is the seemingly random and unrelated train of thought that leads him there. I often hear later that during one of our conversations he saw someone standing next to me commenting on what I was saying to him. His behaviour seems so bizarre from my point of view but makes a lot more sense when he explains what his reality looked like in the moment.

Just joined & was not disappointed. Thank you so much.

I caught the last portion of your live last night and was able to view the entire episode this morning. As it relates to Lori, were the 2 of you able to see Zac Cox’s interview with Justin Lum? His comments regarding the activity going on in his grandparent’s home relative to the aftermath of Charles’ murder was enlightening. He mentioned Tylee was upset and having an emotional conversation with Janice and how Janice steered Tylee to the door and away from Zac. Based upon Zac’s comments IMO Janice called Lori and shared Tylee’s conversation with her. It caused me to consider Lori’s reference to taking a phone away from a 16 year old. Tylee was still alive in August when Lori moved Tylee’s benefits from her account to Lori’s. So Lori took Tylee’s money after she took the phone and then isolated her from friends and family by moving her to Idaho. ˆIt seems that everyone in the family had to be on Lori’s side. If not Lori spread rumors about them and as it relates to Adam and Zac, they feared for their life. How does Lori’s family of “soldiers for Lori” mentality play into her mental state? It makes me wonder if she held her family hostage if they were willing to lie, disown other family members and murder family members if that is what Lori wanted them to do. Also, Janice made an off the cuff remark during an interview when she said that she coached Lori’s softball team and Lori would not let her mother replace her with another pitcher. What do you make of this?

I loved this discussion so much and look forward to more thoughts on Lori's treatment and what that may look like in the next three to six months. Do we know if she will be transferred to a mental hospital? What might those conditions be like? Now that Rob Wood is no longer contesting it sounds like she may not be malingering. Really looking forward to more thoughts on this and the Vallow / Daybell case.

I would be interested in learning more about the ink blot tests. 🧐

Saaaaame, regarding Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

Julie Holden

This was very informative. Thank you.

So true- often with psychopaths there will be an undetected trail of crimes since childhood. Lori's apparent fascination with poisoning people would certainly fit that bill- and I'm sure there have been many other crimes she has committed over the years that were never discovered, reported or found their way into the criminal justice system.

Lauren and John Matthias

Yum! Thank you for the snack. More please❣️

This was awesome, thank you!! It really was like sitting with you both over dinner. By the way, I have always wondered if Lori had Munchausen by Proxy. I'm excited for the next podcast.

What frustrates me are the people who know Lori say she was the most loving wonderful mother. Correct me if I am wrong but I am assuming a person does not wake up a psychopath (or what ever disorder she has). This is why I love your podcasts and snacks. Lori's past has a lot to do with her behavior and the murder of her children. I believe when the trial and this whole circus is over, we will see a lot more shady and illegal actions that Lori has gotten away will her whole life. Thank you so much for your work on this case!

It seems that outward appearances are very important with the Cox family which could be attributed to disorders concerning food//weight. Whether schizophrenia is part of the equation i am not convinced, but i do know she is very competent in what she did or is alleged to have done. Chad's mental health is another story, I do not know. All i know is that justice needs to prevail xx

Jennifer-Anne Hunter

People have been calling her mental health into question for years. A fair number of them are now dead. Only now are authorities thinking she may not be ‘right’?
