2023-10-22 10:45:51 +0000 UTCI just listened to how you met story. Love is real when you know it you know. I’m writing this here cause I’m not sure how to get back there. Love to all three of you.

2023-09-17 18:49:28 +0000 UTCWhether they believe this or not is unimportant. They murdered children. The laws of the nation ban murder. They crossed that legal line and, in doing that, stepped outside of civilization. However, the fact that these beliefs allowed them to marry, and provided stolen money to support them, is way too convenient. - Lori’s friend from Hawaii certainly read the books. When it came down to (just) leaving her children, her answer was nope! Loud and clear Nope! The key here is that you have to stay inside the laws of the nation.

2023-09-10 18:24:46 +0000 UTCNo. He specifically named each person that was murdered and said they did not deserve to die.

2023-09-05 20:10:46 +0000 UTCI think this was an important interview. It was strange. It was unsettling. I appreciated the professional way the interview was conducted. We live in a society where we are getting way too used to shock jock (pundits)interviews, versus a journalistic approach. The whole reason to do this interview was to get a better understanding of the bizarre belief system and how many people potentially believe it. Lauren wasn’t there to espouse her belief , she was there to get his.

2023-09-03 15:24:37 +0000 UTCI wonder how she’ll (Ruby Franke) hold up in prison? According to GiGi’s (at Pretty Lies and Alibis) prison contact, Mama Turpin gets the crap kicked out of her so often they had to move her out of general population.

2023-09-03 05:18:38 +0000 UTCDid he believe that the children were evil spirits and deserved to be killed? I’m confused. I was really surprised that he said that an evil spirit could enter someone.

2023-09-01 21:30:49 +0000 UTCThese are not LDS, the are “off shoots” called Mormon. There are many differences. The LDS could do more to counter misogyny. That said, this stuff may have started from LDS beliefs, but there is no match.
Roberta S Treacy
2023-09-01 18:21:37 +0000 UTCWell, his (and these) beliefs are indeed extreme. This stuff makes me feel helpless. The notion that children can be possessed is so repugnant. Once a belief is deeply embedded some people do act on those beliefs. Also, the more people hear about beliefs, the more intrigued they become. FOMO draws a lot of folks into dopey and dangerous activity. I did not see or hear the other interviews and, based on his remarks to you, I thought his fantasy based ideology would have emerged in them as well. I felt a sense of relief at the sentencing of Lori. I will, hopefully, feel a greater sense of relief at what I believe will be Chad’s sentencing. Also, I don’t know why people are concerned about whether or not the murderers believe this claptrap. Is the implication that this is more understandable if they actually believed it? I do not care whether or not they believed their gibberish. There are five - possibly six - dead bodies.

2023-09-01 17:49:58 +0000 UTCHi Barb, while this is about Braxton’s belief system; not mine, I wonder if what is really bothering you is that I don’t adhere to the stereotype you just laid out for someone who is Mormon, according to your personal beliefs, and how I fit into the “Mormon definition” you’ve established and stated. I think one important aspect of understanding belief is realizing that each person behind a religion is a unique multifaceted person who can’t be defined by a label. It’s wonderful to be curious about others beliefs, and to want to understand, but defining others beliefs so narrowly becomes problematic, in my opinion. I know very few “weak” LDS women, and the stereotype is offensive.

2023-09-01 16:55:06 +0000 UTCThank you Colette! I almost lost my mind that not many people saw what Lauren was doing. I subscribe because I love true crime, this couldn't be a rabbit hole; there are many people who have this belief and I wanted to know why. I am an introverted bookworm which means these two are able to research (I am in school again for criminal justice and prelaw) while I can't myself. They're asking the questions I want to know. I don't know how she pulled it off so amazingly! Then we have Doc for "therapy" in the weeks after and he helps us all hash our way through disasters. Why this interview was controversial blows my mind!
Anna
2023-09-01 16:46:21 +0000 UTCI agree with you both that these interviews are important. I think some of my discomfort while listening to people like Braxton and Janell talk is the realization that there are lots of people who hold very bizarre beliefs and we live among them. I don’t think most will act out criminally but it is very unsettling to know that there are people who don’t immediately recognize the absurdity of things like portals, lizard people, Qanon, etc. I think you do a great job with your interviews. You are always very prepared, respectful, while also pushing back in ways that don’t shut people down.

2023-09-01 16:46:02 +0000 UTC"Many of us Christians"...?? More than a quarter of the planet is Christian. I'm not, but I didn't realize that "many" of the approximately 2.6 out of 8 billion people who believe in JC were sitting around in judgement of other people's "very offensive non-Christian values." Almost all of the Christians I know are all about "Love God, love each other, take care of each other, be kind, and keep doing your best" — things along those lines. I guess I'm just lucky to have such sweet friends!

2023-09-01 16:31:58 +0000 UTCLove this conversation. I appreciate Lauren's interview with Braxton so much. She digs deep into his belief systems; in other interviews, he's not asked about them at all. Much like the YouTuber y'all played, the interview with Braxton helped me understand that Lori, Chad, etc really do believe this stuff. And it seems like many others still do, to some extent. It's mind-blowing...! One example of Lori equivocating is in her statement in court when she implied that Tammy, Tylee, and JJ died from a bad reaction to medication, suicide, and an accidental death. She'll talk about how they come visit her, and that her veil is torn, and all that nonsense, but she won't admit that she murdered her children to help them avoid living through the apocalypse. I do think there's some truth to that theory. BTW, does Lori *almost* throw Chad under the bus by listing the ways Tammy, Tylee, and JJ died? Because — (stay with me 😄) — if she's claiming that she was *told* that was what happened, then *who* told her those lies? It would have to be Alex AND Chad, right? Last but not least, I'm so happy to hear that y'all are looking at Ruby Franke. I saw today that three of her sisters are also social media influencers, and that they've been trying to help the children for awhile now. It's so heartbreaking that this situation apparently went on for such a long time before authorities were able to intervene. 💔

2023-09-01 15:55:42 +0000 UTCI’m surprised to see that Lauren’s sit down with Brax went over so many heads. I guess they don’t understand what HTC is.

2023-09-01 15:49:19 +0000 UTCIt’s horrifying to me that someone would call themselves a “Christian” while making such judgmental statements. WWJD. I consider your brand of Christian offensive and phoney.

2023-09-01 15:47:12 +0000 UTCIf people couldn't see that Lauren's tone was completely different during this interview (she was obviously holding a lot back)... I just don't know how to respond. Lauren was doing her job and she does it well. If others weren't interested how and why people end up the way they do, specifically with religion, then we will get nowhere as a society. That being said, this was an excellent interview and I understand more as a result. Thank you Lauren and Doc for all your hard work. Please keep it up! Don't change.

2023-09-01 15:18:36 +0000 UTCI agree with the other listeners who couldn’t take anymore of the Braxton interview. At some point, I just stop listening. I was wondering about myself, and why I never bought into any religion or cult, and now at age 69. I am grateful that I didn’t.. yes, of course at a moment of panic or crisis. For instance, if I was choking on something, The first thought would be, oh dear God, please help me… those type of words I learned growing up as a Catholic. But at age 13 I didn’t believe most of it.. everything I know now about belief comes from within. My intuition, my gut feelings what’s right and what’s wrong and how to live a good life. I’m grateful for that. I will continue to be a Supporter and a listener, and I am most grateful for Dr. John’s in sight.

2023-09-01 11:39:46 +0000 UTCI'm so relieved by this discussion between you, Lauren and Dr John. Braxton's interview left me dumbfounded by Lauren's lack of horror at the extreme beliefs that he acknowledged believing, even brief affirmation in portals, demon possession, any of those extreme beliefs of Lori and Chad. Your discussion here helped, but I find that I am still questioning your belief system, because of your Mormonism. Many of us Christians have always considered Mormons to be in a cult of very offensive non-Christian values with weak women who are bullied by men and are into Smith's male domination with phoney claims of spirituality.

2023-09-01 07:25:32 +0000 UTCI am very glad you did the interview with Braxton. The shorter interviews didn't get anywhere close to the depth of information that your interview did.

2023-09-01 05:53:19 +0000 UTCThe others who interviewed Braxton referred to his beliefs as normal, and others beliefs as extreme. In our interview we learned how extreme his beliefs were and we shined light on the concerns. It’a unfortunate the other interviews didn’t do the same.

2023-09-01 05:00:28 +0000 UTCHi Lauren and John, by interviewing Braxton you gave him and these awful beliefs way more oxygen. The more coverage, the more traction their fantasy notions will have. The thing about off shoot Mormons is that they kill their own. Please do not normalize these extreme ideas. We have all heard this gibberish from a good variety of followers, including the court testimonies. This is so far outside the realm of religion. Candidly, fervent religious belief is typically a refuge from the fear of death. Once a religion makes murder a viable action, then you know that you are allowing departure from civilization. Dr. John says you are making a record. Others interviewed Braxton, so no additional interviews were needed for the record. I admire what you both do. That said, this interview was troubling.
Roberta S Treacy
2023-09-01 04:53:44 +0000 UTCLauren, When you were quietly receiving Braxton's most extreme beliefs without comment, knowing that you are Mormon, I became uncomfortable, wondering how much of the dishonest, manipulative claims of Joseph Smith's formation of a religion that took advantage of Christianity with addition of mysticism, sheer fiction, basing Mormonism on hugely evil fictitious lies. I couldn't tell what you agreed with of Braxton's belief in demon possession, then Lori's belief in end of the world justification for murders, portals, etc.

2023-09-01 01:47:47 +0000 UTCWhen does delusion become "delusional disorder"? After listening to Brax rant on incessantly about the most outrageously outlandish offensive utter nonsense, it's clear Lori is not even remotely significant or individual in her beliefs. She is just one of many. Aside from being homicidal. Do all of these people have delusional disorder? Do chad, Julie Rowe, and all of those various cult members all with extremely embarrassingly nonsensical beliefs, all suffer from delusional disorder? All of Qanon who believes that JFK junior is secretly alive and running an underground secret government? Where is the line? There isn't one in my opinion. They are all the same.

2023-09-01 01:36:37 +0000 UTCFully agree. These people have massive networks and are building cult schools to continue brainwashing each generation. And they are allowed to run for government. We need new standards.

2023-09-01 01:23:37 +0000 UTCWhile I was trying to find the episode of Doomsday Preppers that Braxton appeared in, I had to watch the whole first season and I remember being struck by the young children that are being drug into this thinking by their parents...and they don't know any better. They are being brought up to fear the future...This is where the absolute danger lies.

2023-09-01 01:18:39 +0000 UTCYes! 👏👏👏. Trump’s shout out to Proud Boys, “stand back and stand down”, Trump’s quote, “very fine people on both sides” about Neo Nazis in Charlottesville. These hate groups, politicians, churches and media have been given a pass in fomenting hate and delusion(lies).

2023-09-01 00:30:05 +0000 UTCI'm only part way in but this is excellent. Thank you for clarification on "delusion". I was very triggered by the word being used to describe Lori because people mistake "delusional " for hallucinating like a schitzo. I fear she might get a free pass because someone thinks she's hallucinating due to a major illness, and therefore not guilty of her crimes. All religion is delusional. The concept that " if "delusions" don't harm anyone then its ok", I am struggling with. Many states in our country are being taken over by delusional religious beliefs that are incredibly harmful for millions of people. Delusional leaders are incredibly dangerous. No matter if they are only Podcasters or government representatives, it's dangerous. We've seen highly contagious delusions like qanon, spread like wild fire. It's easier to point out new delusions as extreme but somehow old delusions get a pass. Not only get a pass but government positions and the ability to make terrible laws for people whom do not share the delusions. that is the epitome of extreme. I don't know what the solution is. These extreme delusional religious people are building their own schools and brainwashing the kids from the start. Awesome podcast.

2023-09-01 00:19:58 +0000 UTCI listened to about 10 minutes and had to stop. How he was with his self righteous superior all knowing tone and how the content of what he was saying being ridiculous whilst at the same time terrifying. No critical thinking skills, magical thinking and delusional religious grandiosity. All this hurt my ears, mind and heart. Total delulu and absolutely explains how we ended up with other family members being murdered. Absolutely disgusting.
