Dateline news and our thoughts on "The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker"

This morning's conversation at our kitchen table. The Christmas decoration are OK, for those wondering! A few roofs from the Christmas village will need to be glued next December, but all is well!

Very late listening to many of these. Dr. John said he's dealt with depression for many years. He reminds me of Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh, even before he'd said that. Part his tone, part the blue/gray shirt he often wears (Which I like by the way). Lauren, if I were to pick a Winnie-the-Pooh character for you, it would be Tigger. Tigger is so curious and usually upbeat & at times a little sad but always empathetic. I Love Winnie-the-Pooh and the analogy of each character to an emotion within a child, except maybe Kanga!! Both adorable characters. I don't have Netflix but enjoyed this analysis regarding actual mitigating mental circumstances. Not all is at it appears on the surface and motivations. Thank you!

Also really appreciate the discussion on our culture and not wanting to look at poverty, homelessness and severe mental illness.

I’m only halfway through so you might mention it, but his violence wielding the hatchet got him all this attention and it likely served as a positive motivational reinforcement for future violence vs only self-sabotage. I wonder if it was a combination.

Thanks for sharing that. That is what john gathered too, so I likely didn’t understand.

Thank you so much for sharing this

I do find it strange that anybody would make an assumption that everybody or anybody would want to be famous and rich. If somebody came up to me right now and said let's go I can make you rich and famous. No thank you I would rather crawl in a hole and die than be famous

My understanding was the first interview was longer. The reporter said he put out the full 6 minutes from the first interview and then later on he did go back and have a longer interview at the hotel but that first one did have a lot longer and it was disturbing things

It's so obvious that Kai and Bryan were in need of mental health care and did not get it. Yet, the Internet will label them as "evil" and demand their execution. Thank you so much for your compassion and understanding.

I again appreciate the insight. It often causes me to self reflect. I think it’s challenging to know when you intervene for a stranger. One thing that stood out to me is how everyone seemed to think having a show and fame was good for him. Not really considering him at all. I was bothered by the way he was discarded so quickly because of his behavior, but no thought was given to the possibility he needed help. But I don’t think most of us even know how to approach that subject with a stranger.

I love sitting and listening to you pick your brains! Lol. So fun and insightful!

Thank you for the truth - I find the ideas that are espoused on the frequent on pulling yourself up by the boot straps very damaging for individuals that are already damaged. I survived and pulled up - I have a brother that didn’t and I can almost see how that happened - and it is nature and nurture - we are almost Irish twins and the outcomes are entirely different through very little of our own input.
