Toon Boom Test 01

A simple animation.

Truth be told, Toon Boom has yet to prove more optimal to me. I have Z axis manipulation, so I can move stuff forward and back easily, which is very nice--however, some differences in the way it handles keyframes and tweening means I have to be a lot more specific with what I do and I have to make edits at the frame itself rather than somewhere on the in between.

While this might look decent, I could literally make this exact same animation in flash in about a quarter of the time it took me. Hopefully the time gap diminishes between the two as I get better.

I have a more full write-up of some of the differences in the original post here:

I'm also planning on doing a video critically comparing a wholly kitted out flash vs. everything I can understand about Toon Boom, as a kind of "should you switch?" video.

That's the problem: People herald the program as being better than flash in every way. It's not realistic at all. Toon Boom is objectively a better program, yes, but that does NOT mean it is more practical by default, which is subjective. The one-size-fits-all overhype has killed more peoples' will to transition than it's sparked. I'm sticking with it because I'm keeping myself grounded and determined. Also I'm writing up a video review, it'll be like 30 minutes long and will go in to depth about Toon Boom vs. Flash. It doesn't make a sweeping recommendation about whether or not a flash animator should transition, which is a huge pitfall of most other reviews, but it goes into length about what's different and what you get for transitioning, providing explanations that should allow someone to make a decision themselves.
