Im so glad you liked this episode. Season 3 is when the show gets really good and this episode is like a sneak preview of whats to come later down the road. Plus martha is so good. I like episodes where the companion gets separated and it shows how smart they are on their own. Like theyre not just an accessory to the doctor, theyre their own person and they get to travel in the tardis for a reason.

This episode was just meh for me when I first saw it all those years ago, but over the years, after multiple rewatches, I think it’s really excellent, some really interesting themes (most of which you covered in your excellent reaction and post viewing thoughts). The first half of season 3 I find fairly weak, but this episode stands out as a good one.

The Doctor has always been a mystery, even to fans of the show. Today were coming up to almost 60 years of Doctor Who and there's still so much we don't know about them, Even the name of the show reflects that. Its rare you see the Doctor open up as they always want to give off the impression they are fine or the situation is under control, also a tactic to make sure the younger audience don't get too scared watching the show.

I enjoyed your take on the underlying themes, metaphors and messages of this episodes.
There's another layer of fun for us. The enjoyment we get from knowing what else to is the come this series. 🤐

Glad you enjoyed this pne🙂. I feel this is a slightly underrated gem, and you are right that there are several undercurrent themes within it. As for the American Gothic couple, RTDs idea was that each car would have it's own theme, and the people in them, who had nothing else, would decorate their cars and dress to express their personalities (a bit like cosplay for some). He just liked the idea of a couple dressed up like that painting. And the hymn they sang just happened to be RTDs favourite hymn - The Old Rugged Cross, I believe.
