The townspeople go to Allerdale Hall the next morning because Alan told them the night before to meet him there after the storm.

I agree. I liked that Edith and Alan didn’t kiss and left their fate up for interpretation.

Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors because he has such a darkly beautiful, uniquely fantastical style. This movie is real dark in terms of content, but it’s so beautiful, don’t you think? Even that decrepit old mansion was beautiful to me (I love creepy old houses). I don’t really believe in ghosts, so I usually prefer horror movies where the main threat is a human who is actually alive (and usually insane), and that is the case in this movie, isn’t it? The ghosts were good for a few jump scares, but they were just trying to warn Edith, so they were actually good. It was fun to watch your reaction to them though, since I already knew all the big reveals. I’ve heard this movie described more as a tragic gothic romance than horror. I think they wanted to try avoid making it too romantic in the end, although they easily could have made Edith and Allen kiss before getting rescued, it’s left up the viewer to assume those two will end up happily ever after together. But it’s not like some epic YA teen love story where the heroine is constantly torn between two love interests, and that’s where most of the “drama” of the movie comes from. I have written more eloquent posts than this, but I’m not focused today. I might have more thoughts about this movie to share later (or I’ll just fall asleep and forget about it) Great reaction, btw. Glad you liked it. 🙂
