This is one of the weaker episodes of Torchwood for me. Sadly, I never was interested in Owen's plot. It was basically fight club but it didn't interest me. Funnily enough, the best part of this episode for me was Gwen breaking down while eating the pizza as it showed how the job is heavily affecting her personal life.

I'm surprised that you loved this episode as much as you did... to me, it was always one of the weaker episodes that I'd usually skip, or not look forward to rewatching, but your reaction made me enjoy it a lot.

What you were saying about finding meaning in life etc reminded me of this bit from Angel.
Angel : "If there's no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'Cause that's all there is. What we do. Now. Today." ...
"Because, if there's no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world."

I like to think Torchwood deals with weaknesses of being human and Doctor Who the powers.

This episode was actually written by Noel Clarke who played Mickey Smith in Doctor Who
