Ian from the very first episode of Doctor Who in 1963 is one of my favourite companions. I also loved Ben and wish more of his episodes had survived. But yes, they're mostly female... :D

to be fair, the vast majority of the Doctor's companions have been the result of sheer happenstance rather than a choice on his part Standard protocol for a classic Who companion is they encounter the Doctor (help him or get rescued by him) and then he'd spend a season trying to get them home but ending up on adventures.

He has had a fair few male companions in classic Who, but there was always a female presence. The Doctor seemed more Asexual in Classic Who too, I remember once the 4th Doctor saying to his companions face, "You're a beautiful woman... probably".

Back in the day, I had a minor crush on Adric who was a companion to Doctors Four and Five. He was played by gay actor Matthew Waterhouse.

Thinking back, if I have my sums right, about a third or more of all companions in Classic Who were male, mostly in the 60s and a couple in the 70s and 80s. I can clearly remember about 7 blokes compared to around 18 young women, though I may be missing a couple from lost episodes. And to be fair, one of those was the Doctor's granddaughter. My favourite would be Jamie McCrimmon with the 2nd Doctor - those two together were comedy gold!
Oh, and the one in the "leather bikini" was Leela, warrior of the Sevateen. Companion to the 4th Doctor, from a "primative" tribe, she was strong and self reliant, and a dab hand with a knife!

A Classic producer/showrunner summed it up,when he said that the female companion should be 'something for the dad's'. In the Classic series they never had the hots for him - although one of them appeared to be romantically inclined toward him,but the Doctor didn't recognise the signs. Another Doctor/companion pairing felt as though it had a romantic undertone;but that was more to with the fact that the two actors were in a romantic relationship behind-the-scenes.

A fellow Mawdryn Undead fan! Most under-appreciated (or most overlooked) story ever.

Talking of noses reminded me a Nancy in season one "do your ears have special powers too". Favorite campanion was A guy in classic, my episode fav ep. Mawdryn Undead with Turlough. Won't let me put a pic but see the images for Mark Strickson. I think in the 80's for awhile were trying to diverse some. Gay producer John Nathan Turner may have something to do with it.

No denying Amy falls under the 'hot' category, but this time it's different. The Doctor first met 'Amelia' as a child and for me I see him treat her more as a paternal friend because of it, and definitely not romantic.

In classic who the companions were never interested in him like that I don’t think. So, I think it’s just a new who kinda thing. But! I would definitely love some more companion diversity. A lot of fans have problems with it too. I would love an alien maybe, or someone from the past, or maybe a historic figure would be cool

Lol Mickey and Jack don’t count for me since the Doctor didn’t really choose them. He just kind of tolerated them because of Rose

Some of them have been guys. Ian, Jamie, Adric, Turlough, Micky, Jack. But not many.
