Listening to you afterward about Danny craving things he wasn't getting at home and Joe giving him those things, that behavior on Joe's part is called grooming. He's manipulating Danny's vulnerability in order to gain physical contact with him. I think Joe despite his protests does understand why he's doing those things, he just can't admit it to himself. I will say, that there's a part of me that no matter how much the script makes it clear that it was Joe, thinks that it was actually Tom who killed Danny and Joe just confessed to protect him. This is pretty much exclusively because the kid who played Tom just played shady so well. lol. It's an in joke among my friends.
