Doctor Who 7x7 “The Rings of Akhaten” FULL REACTION

Comments

I change my mind about this episode every time I see it. This time round it was just meh for me, but there's been other times I've felt really moved by it. I actually can't think of another episode that I feel more hot and cold with depending on my mood.

I really love the music that's played when Clara is speaking about the leaf etc at the end, I think it's beautiful. It is reused in another episode, and I think I associate it more with that one than this.

This episode looks like an outer-space romp but yeah it's actually pretty deep... I love it!

DOCTOR: So, where do you want to go, eh? What do you want to see? CLARA: I don't know. You know when someone asks you what's your favorite book and straight away you forget every single book that you've ever read? DOCTOR: No. Totally not. CLARA: Well, that's a thing that happens. DOCTOR: And? Back to the question? CLARA: Okay. So. So. So. So I'd like to see. I would like to see. What I would like to see is, something awesome!

Omg that’s right!🤭

I think this episode is very underrated. I can see why people don't like it, but I can't help but have a great fondness for it.

Evan!!

Really liked your review of this episode. You pulled out aspects I'd never considered before.

A real favourite of my mine. Never ever ceases to bring more than a few 🥲's to my 👀

Clara’s fear of being lost is interesting. If you remember in the previous episode, she got lost in the web and became frantic, saying “I don’t don’t where I am” over and over again. And switching over to Oswin: when Oswin started to realize she was not where she thought (a ship) she said “where am I” with great trepidation, followed by a flashback to landing in the Dalek planet and again saying “where am I” repeatedly and frantically. So we have seen both modern Clara and the look-a-like Oswin experience being lost and afraid.

Love your post-episode discussion! Somehow you always have new insight or certain takes that makes me appreciate an episode even more. This one is no exception. And I loved your reactions to both the Doctor’s and Clara’s speeches/stories to the “god.” It’s my favorite 11 speech. And Clara is so clever, knowing that her leaf represented an infinity that would overwhelm the star.

This one is a little slow in the middle, otherwise, I love it. The First Doctor was an older more grandfatherly type, and his Granddaughter was the very 1st Doctor Who companion, another callback. I have some head canon on this one, or maybe it’s obvious to those who know Classic Who, really not sure which, lol. Anyway, when the Doctor mentions his granddaughter, Matt bends over a little as he walks away, intimating the characteristics of the old Time Lord, he also talks that way, his tone sounds older as well. So here, in this story I think the Grandfather, not only refers to the “Old God” but to the Doctor. Just a couple tidbits. The Long Song is one of Murray Gold’s favourites, and Matt had serious doubts that he could even give that speech. I think he did just fine.

I hear people say that about Clara, and while I do understand it, I’ve just always looked at them more as a team. I guess it’s because no one outshines the Doctor in my eyes. The Doctor has always been my focus. Admittedly, there are a couple instances and Doctors this may not apply to, but overall, it’s how it works for me. 😊

Fun- or not so fun- fact! Clara's mother's grave enlists her death as being the same date as the first episode of Modern Doctor Who, aka the Plastic Auton invasion. So you *could* say she died during that. Whoops!

Matt's *take it all!* speech is my personal favourite of his era (it's s bit of a pity that Clara then goes one better). I like the way that you thought the aliens were from Classic - sadly not (oh,if only Classic aliens could have looked that good!) The reference to his grandaughter,on the other hand, was from Classic - she was a companion to the First Doctor.
