Doctor Who 7x8 “Cold War” FULL REACTION

Comments

It's good enough for a Gatis script. 'Alien' on a Submarine in the 80's. - That was probably his pitch :)

Ian Smith

Oh and on Cold War. I really dislike this episode. It's basically them running up and down corridors for 40 minutes. Boring as fuck.

Thanks

So after Series 7 episode 13, youll want to watch these in order. The night of the doctor. (minisode found on youtube doctor who channel) An adventure in space and time. (Biographical film about about doctor who, not essential but i think youll really enjoy it, has some nice suprises) The last day. (minisode found on youtube doctor who channel) 50th anniversary episode. Then finally the Christmas episode between series 7 and 8.

This episode is definitely filled with British acting talent. In addition to the actors you mention, the elderly Ultravox fan was played by David Warner - a highly esteemed character actor of 50 years standing. For me,this is a compact and entertaining stand-alone episode, that doesn't really aim to be anything more than a study in jeopardy. To that end,it does its job pretty well. It's worth pointing out that the year this was broadcast was the 50th year since Dr Who started - so Classic references appear in many of these stories;all building up to the "50th Anniversary" itself ( a big event, back in 2013) with a whole lot of things happening. To this end,it might be useful (if not,in fact, highly valuable) for you to become a little familiar with some of the shows history - at the very least in terms of who the other Doctors were. You should certainly do a watch/reaction of the very first episode (An Unearthly Child) and the Dr Who Movie would be highly recommended - this is what several other reactors (Blind Wave;7th Hour;Fourth Wall) have done, and it was of great benefit to them.

Skaldak's CGI does let down that last scene- whilst it's frustrating how they don't show him prior, I think that adds to the scare factor. Alas, that went when we see his goofy face. Hey ho!

I'm still not totally sure about this one. I did enjoy it this time but I hadn't previously regarded it as a good one. I do like the Karaoke and Hen Night translation into Russian quip. I think Karaoke translates as empty orchestra and Hen Night is a term for a night out or party for a bride before the wedding. So I imagine wouldn't make sense.

While certainly not an outstanding episode, I personally still like this one. Yes, the Ice Warriors are a classic Who villain, mainly from the 2nd and 3rd Doctors' runs. For me, living through the 80s and being very aware of the Cold War and nuclear threat of that era, I suppose this story resonates with me more than for other people. Also, Clara is a bit of an adrenalin junkie, who at first is getting a thrill out of the danger - exited to try to please the Doctor in doing well when first talking with Skaldak. But I like how she is suddenly brought down to earth on seeing the dismembered bodies, and realises this is not a game after all. And finally, Ultravox were a fairly successful British New Wave band from the 80s. They did split up in 1988, but reformed a couple of times since. The song the professor was listening to on his walkman and singing along with at the start of the episode was their 1981 hit Vienna - https://youtu.be/VVkHZz0WOqs
