The expression on her face after that kiss just says so much. She will always be a WHO favorite for me.

Probably among my least liked finales of the Moffat era, but there's still some good stuff there. I think this season lets down Clara a lot, I think she's pretty well-introduced but at a certain point they just lose track of how they want her character to come across.
The River stuff is interesting; Alex Kingston has notably said she was not fond of her role in this episode, but I think it's an interesting capper onto River's story. It feels like we've missed so much of her character though where a lot of it happened offscreen.
The Hurt reveal is cool (and would've been better had I knew who he was when I first started hearing rumors about him lol).
I think Moffat kind of phoned in this one since (like I've said before) he was spending so much bandwidth on the 50th anniversary. Watching it this time I really noticed how poorly paced it was and how weirdly edited some parts were, it felt like they cut a scene or two that were there to help the viewer orient themselves in the space.

River Song was in this episode and the Doctor kissed her. As far as I’m concerned nothing else matters more than this.

After going through this series with you i do have a lot of the same gripes about this season.. its not the best. However, the minisodes, the documentary (adventure in space and time) and the 50th really bring the rest of the series up a notch for me. Excited for the late great John Hurt.. such a good idea to bring him in for this.. fun fact, when Steven Moffatt called him to see if he would be interested, without hesitating or reading any scripts he just said "Yes". I mean... how do you turn down the chance to be The Doctor!?

I enjoy this story a great deal - although I use the term 'story' VERY loosely; as it's really just a collection of ideas. As you pointed out,the prisoner guy at the beginning is set up but never mentioned again;and the story sort of goes from moment to moment....but a lot of those moments are great fun! The 'Clara arc' is resolved very well (ok, it's a high-concept explanation;but it does the job);it's always good to see Richard E. Grant in ANYTHING ; and we finally get to see the scene of the First Doctor and Susan fleeing from Gallifrey (which brings the whole series full circle back to just before Unearthly Child).

Other thoughts on Clara. I think I was so wrapped up in the performance of Jenna-Louise Coleman, who I really think was a massive step up on Karen Gillan (sorry I know she's a favourite of yours) that any fall off in writing, was made up for with superior acting. Looking back I can see why others felt like she was a 'weaker' character but I just enjoyed seeing her on screen the whole time.

Interesting take on how Clara should have shown up as just a 'good' entity to combat the 'evil' of the Great Intelligence. I think they tried to cover it off by saying she calls to him but he rarely hears her so yeah, that most don't remember her because she's not a big enough part and that she saves his life in ways that don't actually require her to speak to him. I remember reacting a lot more to Jenny's 'death' than you did... :D You really don't care about those 3 at all do you :D I really liked this as a solution to the Impossible Girl mystery, which was always going to be difficult to recompense. Very interested to see your take on An Uneartlly Child (about to go and watch that now)... I'm hoping you like that episode at least, even though The Cave Of Skulls and the remaining episodes of that serial are pretty weak and not the best example of Classic Who lol...!

A lot of people have the same issues with Clara as you do. I don’t disagree, but It didn’t bother me at the time. My focus was on the Doctor, and all the excitement of the 50th anniversary. Moffat should have done a better job with this half of the season, but I give him a pass because he had a lot riding on this special, and the pressure must have been enormous. There’s a lot of fan service here, again because of when it aired. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know all the history. A lot of this episode is open to your own interpretation. I thought your reasoning was really great! You will get some answers going forward. I find this episode to be extremely entertaining, and that scene on the couch, I think is one of Matt’s best.
