Alaric is so worried about shielding these kids that he doesn't realize he’s ultimately hurting them. Lizzie and Josie didn't know how to handle the spider situation, but Hope did because she always had Freya teaching her magic. He needs to get over himself and let these kids thrive instead of holding them back. Lizzie reminds me of (human) Caroline sometimes. She's really interesting.

Rick and Caroline made sure there was magic in the walls so the twins don't have a disadvantage and are always able to use magic. This was explained in the earlier episodes. Fun fact: The actress who plays Dana was playing a cheerleader or so in TVD
