Artist Tips: Doing Value Bases

Value Bases: This is something I’ve seen other artists do and have been dying to try. It can be done traditionally or digitally, with traditional obviously being a bit more tricky. Essentially if you want to make sure your values are awesome and in point which can get kind of confusing when you work with color you can make your piece in black and white first and then add color over top. With paint you use something called a wash or a glaze (if you follow Annie stegg on Instagram she does color glazes over black and white paintings that are mesmerizing to watch). With this piece I put all my values in place with black and white markers first and then added the color after with colored pencil. Silly me I didn’t take a proper process picture of the finished black and white unfortunately but hopefully you get the gist. Adding a light layer of colored pencil on top of places like the lips or eyes kept the values but gave them a pop of color. It’s honestly magic. Everyone should try this technique out at some point because it’s so helpful!

These are prismacolors! I just got them and I love them, they’re so buttery smooth.

What colored pencils do you use? ❤️
