The Sojourn and The Age of Sail

Hello Patrons!

From it's conception, The Sojourn has always been intended to serve two purposes: To get science fiction fans excited about voice actors and the incredible work they do, and to apply my own love for the romanticism of nautical history and the Age of Sail as the basis of a science fiction setting.

Where most military science fiction draws from the battleships and submarines of the Second World War for inspiration, The Sojourn instead takes it's historical reference from 18th Century Ships of the Line and from the long voyages of the Age of Discovery.

The Sojourn's world features a number of very deliberate parallels with British Colonialism and the exploits of the Royal Navy throughout the 1700s, with the spun-off societies of the Frontier Union and the Merician Freehold taking significant inspiration from the former domains of the British Empire.

In The Sojourn, Bridges are Quarterdecks, Light Freighters are Schooners, and people eat Hardtack (though not by choice).

In the ancient past, journeys were long and cooperation was critical. The camaraderie and understanding fostered by sharing the fate of your vessel, is a perfect catalyst for the kind of Firefly-esque storytelling that I love to write.

So, in this case more than ever; Fair winds.

Wait a minute. Does this mean that the Fontire Union is this world's version of the Rebellious Child of the British Empire? IE. America.

I love that you are focusing on adapting the Age of Sail to the navies in the Sojourn. I have been doing the same thing in a setting I am writing. There is something very romantic and yet very visceral about the Age of Sail and carrying that forward to the Sojourn gives an immediate sense of familiarity.
