It might interest you to know that I'm a domme for similar, but opposite, reasons that a sub might see it as a break from being in control. I grew up in an abusive family where everything in my life happened without my direct choice (only other people's choices for me) and with no control, but lots of control from others. So the bedroom is a chance for me to have some control for once, though usually this just involves pampering and showering my sub with love. So, I'm more of a gentle or "mommy" domme, but if my sub wants to go harder, then I can, though I'm admittedly not good with spanking or other forms of painplay. I tend to be too gentle for my own good, to the point I physically can't bring myself to use force without holding back more than I need to. Several of my subs have also stated they are subs for the reasons you mentioned, a love of giving up control because they're often the responsible one who is forced to lead or take care of others. One of my favorite BDSM quotes is "I kneel at your feet not because I am expected to, but because it's where I feel safest." Most doms aren't naturally sadists either, so a big part of aftercare is not just tending to the sub, but also the sub giving reassurance and validation to the dom. Since the dom doesn't do anything the sub didn't agree to beforehand, and most BDSM is the dom doing things to the sub that the sub wanted, you could even say that a good sub has more control over the BDSM play than the dom does. It's not all "sub debases themselves for the pleasure of the dom who coaxed or forced them into it" like fiction tends to insist.

While not my kink, it was pretty fascinating getting into the psychological aspects of what goes on and how for some (especially those who suffer from control issues or anxiety) can find it as a form of mental release. Where they give up everything to their partner, and allowing themselves to decompress in one of the greatest forms of physical, mental amd emotional trust they could offer. That's how it was explained to me at least. I'm sure it's much more nuanced than that.
